Low Salt Diets
Among the most widely prescribed modified diets in use today are those which limit the amount of table salt and salt containing foods you may use. These diets are often used in the treatment of high blood pressure and some other types of heart, kidney and liver diseases. They are also used when you are taking certain prescription drugs that cause the body to hold fluids. Table salt is a major source of sodium, which is the water holding mineral of the body. The amount of sodium required by our bodies to maintain good health is very small. It is much smaller than the amount we normally receive in our food and water. The body of a normal, healthy person easily gets rid of the excess sodium. It passes out in the urine. When the heart, liver or kidneys are not working properly the body may have difficulty getting rid of this extra sodium. This causes the body to hold onto more water and a swelling may develop. This swelling occurs mainly in the feet and legs. The condition is called edema. Some medicines, cortisone for example, may also cause the body to retain sodium and develop edema. The part that sodium plays in high blood pressure is less well understood. However, we do know that people whose diets are very high in salt or sodium are more likely to develop high blood pressure. Diets low in sodium help to control the condition. If a diet low in salt or sodium is needed, it must depend on the individual and his medical condition. The doctor must have the final word. If your doctor decides your salt or sodium intake should be controlled, he may either give you a printed diet sheet or send you to a Registered Dietitian. He will also send a diet prescription along with you. The dietitian will then interview you and work out a diet with you which meets the doctors’ prescription. This will also follow the eating pattern you have developed as closely as possible.

What is heart and cardiovascular disease?
While often thought of as the same thing, heart and cardiovascular disease are different, involving different parts of your body.
  • Heart disease refers only to diseases of the heart and the blood vessel system within the heart. Cardiovascular disease refers to diseases of the heart and diseases of the blood vessel system (arteries, capillaries, veins) within a person's entire body, such as the brain, legs, and lungs. "Cardio" refers to the heart and "vascular" refers to the blood vessel system.
The heart is a strong, muscular pump slightly larger than your fist. It pumps blood continuously through the circulatory system , the network of elastic tubes that allows blood to flow throughout your body. The circulatory system includes two major organs, the heart and lungs, and blood vessels (arteries, capillaries, and veins). Arteries and capillaries carry oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood from the heart and lungs to all parts of the body. Veins carry oxygen- and nutrient-depleted blood back to the heart and lungs. Heart and blood vessel problems do not happen quickly. Over time, the arteries that bring blood to the heart and brain can become blocked from a buildup of cells, fat, and

Mollie's Big Heart is dedicated to a great little guy who happens to have a very BIG heart! Mollie, an 11-year-old neutered male, American shorthair feline, was diagnosed in early 2003 with FUS (Feline Urologic Syndrome), a painful and potentially deadly feline disease. While FUS or, rather, Feline Lower Urinary Tract disease (FLUT) as it is now commonly referred to, can strike both female and male cats, it has a propensity for targeting mainly neutered males. Mollie was in unbearable pain and despite emergency treatment, medication, and catheters, he was unable to pass the crystals (or, sand) that had blocked his ureter; therefore, he was unable to urinate. Mollie's prognosis was extremely bleak so our vet referred us to a specialist who evaluated him as a candidate for a surgical procedure called a perineal urethrostomy After pre-operative EKG and ultrasound tests were made, we were informed that Mollie had a condition called called

Peripheral Arterial Disease: A Patient Guide
What is Peripheral Arterial Disease?
Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) affects millions of people in the United States, most of whom are not aware that they have the disease. PAD interferes with one's lifestyle by decreasing walking ability (it affects the limbs) and affecting cardiovascular health. Left untreated, PAD increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, amputation of lower extremity limbs, and death. A patient with PAD has about five times the risk of dying of a heart attack or stroke over the next ten years as the patient who does not have peripheral arterial disease. Which arteries are most affected by PAD? The major areas where atherosclerosis produces symptoms in the peripheral artery beds are: What are the symptoms of PAD? In later stages of the disease, the blockage can get so bad that it can lead to gangrene and ulcers and loss of the foot or limb. The likelihood of acquiring PAD increases with age. Nearly 20 percent of Americans over the age of 70 have PAD, as compared to less than 8 percent of those 69 years of age or younger. Despite widely held beliefs in the general population, the symptoms of PAD are not inevitable results of the normal aging process. The vast majority of diagnosed patients are able to control this progressive condition with proper medical treatment. What are the risk factors for PAD?

Coronary Artery Disease : What Is ...
What Is ...
Other Names Causes Who Is At Risk ... Links What Is Coronary Artery Disease?
Coronary artery disease (CAD) occurs when the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle (coronary arteries) become hardened and narrowed. The arteries harden and become narrow due to the buildup of plaque on the inner walls or lining of the arteries (atherosclerosis). Blood flow to the heart is reduced as plaque narrows the coronary arteries. This decreases the oxygen supply to the heart muscle.
CAD is the most common type of heart disease. It is the leading cause of death in the U.S. in both men and women.
When blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart are reduced or cut off, you can develop:
  • Angina Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when your heart is not getting enough blood.
    Heart attack
A heart attack happens when a blood clot suddenly cuts off most or all blood supply to part of the heart. Cells in the heart muscle that do not receive enough oxygen-carrying blood begin to die. This can cause permanent damage to the heart muscle.
Over time, CAD can weaken your heart muscle and contribute to:

One of our current projects, in association with Yale University School of Medicine, has dramatically changed the protocol for heart transplants. An important article, published in 1998 in The New England Journal of Medicine described how this new treatment protocol is more effective than conventional immunosuppression in preventing episodes of cardiac rejection. More importantly, new coronary artery disease in these hearts is markedly reduced after transplantation. Another project, in association with Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, uses high-speed MRI and CT techniques with the goal of producing non-invasive studies of the heart and associated arteries.

A discussion about heart valves, valve diseases, symptoms, and surgical procedures.

Heart Valve Diseases and Heart Valve Surgery
Heart valves have key roles in regulating blood flow through the heart, opening and closing in sequence with each heartbeat. These valves act like one-way doors, allowing blood to flow either forward into the next chamber, or out of the heart via one of two main blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. The valves close to prevent back flow.
Heart Valve Functions
On the right side of the heart, blood flows through the tricuspid valve, which lies between the right atrium and the right ventricle. On the left side of the heart, the mitral valve controls the blood flow between the left atrium and left ventricle. The pulmonary valve controls flow from the right ventricle into the pulmonary artery , which carries blood to the lungs for oxygenation. On the left side, the aortic valve opens the way for oxygenated blood to pass from the left ventricle into the aorta , the body?s largest artery.
Causes of Heart Valve Malfunction
Heart valves may become impaired for a variety of reasons. Rheumatic fever, the most common cause of valve malfunction, causes a valve to stiffen over time. This limits the ability of the valve to open and close properly. Some people are born with heart valve abnormalities, which may be corrected at birth or later in life. Other people may acquire valve damage from infection (as with bacterial endocarditis) or other diseases. The results are a tight, rigid valve limiting forward blood flow (called a stenotic valve ), or a valve which does not close properly, permitting back flow (called a
