WOMEN'S HEART HEALTH
Introduction to Women's Heart Health
Heart Disease Is the Leading Killer of American Women
Guidant is committed to providing education on women's heart health. Consider these facts:
  • Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in American women. It is estimated that almost 1 in 3 women will eventually die of heart disease or stroke. In a 2003 AHA poll, only 13% of American women considered heart disease their greatest health risk. After menopause, women begin to develop and die of heart disease at a rate equal to that of men. 38% of women who have heart attacks die within a year, compared to 25% of men. 63% of women who die from coronary heart disease had no previous symptoms. Many women and their doctors do not recognize the early signs of a heart attack. Some diagnostic tests and procedures, including the exercise stress test, or stress ECG, might be less accurate in women.

Survey: Americans underuse 911 services in response to heart attack symptoms
July 12, 2000 Web posted at: 12:24 p.m. EDT (1624 GMT) From staff reports ATLANTA (CNN) Most Americans readily will telephone 911 to summon medical help when they fear someone else is having a heart attack, but many are reluctant to make the call when they have the same symptoms, researchers reported Tuesday. That hesitance could be deadly.

And Finally

T HANKS FOR dropping by my web site. At the age of 43 I had a heart attack, three years later in 2000 I had a quadruple heart bypass operation so should I roll over and give in to heart disease. The answer yes would have been easy, instead I changed my diet and my lifestyle. I am now addressing my working life. No more long hours, more time at home and more time away on holiday.
I went back to work, went back to some old ways and now wish I hadn’t. I ended up being very stressed and had some old symptoms returning. So I don’t intend to do that again and now I want to concentrate on having some quality time doing what I need to do. Part of quality to me is the Costa Del Sol in Spain and I have been several times, Maybe I will end up there who knows?
Here you will see links to some apartments I can recommend them follow the link.
Make sure most of all that you make time for you and your family as part of your recovery and you will get better and stay better if you make those life changes.

you think you might be experiencing heart attack symptoms. "Some experience the onset of a heart attack as a sharp radiating pain across their chest and back, while others feel more of a heavy pressure in their chest," said Robert Shesser, M.D., Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at The George Washington University Hospital. "For each person it's different... that's why everyone needs to become familiar with all the symptoms of a heart attack." Common symptoms include:
  • Pain in the chest
  • Nausea
  • Sweating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
Time can be critical. Waiting too long before going to the emergency department may increase the amount of heart damage. That's why it's important to go immediately to your nearest emergency room or call 911. According to Shesser, seeking immediate treatment can make a big difference in the quality of life after recovery.

Attacking the heart attack By Avery Comarow I t's hard to remember that a heart attack was once a death sentence. These days, nearly 4 out of 5 heart attack victims survive. Emergency physicians treat them with clotbusting medications, their blocked arteries are reopened, and they are sent home, loaded down with pills and finger-wagging admonitions about diet and exercise, to resume the regular rhythms of their lives. It isn't exactly a ho-hum script, but it is the one the public has come to expect. Yet less than 50 years ago, well within many baby boomers' lifetimes, physicians did not realize that the damage of a heart attack could be minimized and even reversed. Indeed, it wasn't until 1960 that a research team at Northwestern University, led by pathologist Robert Jennings, used experiments with several dozen dogs to demonstrate that radical idea. A heart attack happens when there is an infarct, or sudden loss of blood flow, to part of the heart's muscular wallhence heart attack's technical name, myocardial infarction. The Jennings team placed a block in one of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, for various periods of time and then removed the blockage. Team members found that the blood-starved tissue could be saved if circulation to the area was restored soon enough. Timing is everything.

Receipt of Cardiac Rehabilitation Services Among Heart Attack Survivors - 19 States and the District of Columbia, 2001
Each year, approximately 650,000 persons have a first heart attack in the United States. Heart attack survivors are at increased risk for recurrent heart attacks, cardiovascular complications, and sudden cardiac death ( ). A major component of risk-reduction strategies for these patients is cardiac rehabilitation consisting of nutritional counseling; management of lipid levels, hypertension, weight, and diabetes; smoking cessation; psychosocial interventions; and physical activity counseling and exercise training ( ). Although cardiac rehabilitation has been associated with substantially improved survival rates ( ), the majority of eligible patients do not participate in cardiac rehabilitation ( ). This report summarizes data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) on the prevalence of self-reported participation in cardiac rehabilitation services among persons in 19 states* and the District of Columbia (DC) who have had a heart attack. The findings indicate that less than one third of these respondents have participated in cardiac rehabilitation. Including cardiac rehabilitation in all intervention plans for eligible patients with coronary heart disease remains a key strategy for reducing further disability. BRFSS is a state-based, random-digitdialed telephone survey of the noninstitutionalized U.S. civilian population aged

Research points to 'Mediterranean' diet to help prevent repeat heart attack
ATLANTA (CNN) People who eat a so-called Mediterranean diet are as much as 70 percent less likely to suffer a second heart attack than those who follow a typical "Western" diet, according to new research. Previous population studies have found a Mediterranean diet one rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, grains and beans protects against coronary heart disease. The new study is published in Monday's issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. For nearly four years, researchers in France followed more than 600 men and women who had had one heart attack. They found those consuming the Mediterranean diet had a 50 to 70 percent lower risk of a second heart attack than those in a control group. The control group consumed a typical Western diet, where almost 34 percent of calories came from fat and almost 12 percent from saturated fat. The Mediterranean diet averaged 30 percent of total calories from fat and only 8 percent from saturated fat.
