Chest Pain / Heart Attack Symptoms
What is a heart attack (myocardial infarction or MI)?
A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, occurs when one of more regions of the heart muscle experience a severe or prolonged decrease in oxygen supply caused by blocked blood flow to the heart muscle. The blockage is often a result of atherosclerosis - a buildup of plaque, known as cholesterol, and other fatty substances. Plaque inhibits and obstructs the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart, thus reducing the flow to the rest of the body.

WASHINGTON (AP) The first gene linked directly to heart attacks has been isolated from an extended Iowa family that has been plagued for generations with rampant coronary artery disease. The gene, called MEF2A, plays a role in protecting the artery walls from building up plaque that can impede blood flow and lead to heart attacks, said Dr. Eric J. Topol of the Cleveland Clinic, head of a team that discovered the gene. "This is the first heart attack gene," said Topol. "Everyone who has this gene mutation is destined to have the disease. If you don't have this gene in this family, you appear to free from developing this disease." A report on the discovery Friday was in the journal Science.

Cocaine heightens heart attack risk, research shows
May 31, 1999 Web posted at: 4:20 p.m. EDT (2020 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) Within the first hour of taking cocaine, the risk of having a heart attack jumps nearly 24 times, according to a new study that strengthens the suspected relationship between the illegal drug and heart disease. Cocaine may raise the risk of heart attacks by boosting blood pressure and heart rate and increasing the contraction of the left ventricle or pumping chamber in the heart, according to Monday's issue of Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association. "Cocaine use, in addition to other adverse health effects, can acutely and immediately trigger the onset of heart attacks with a great increase in risk," said researcher Dr. Murray Mittleman of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. "This is a risk that just may not be worth taking."

A heart attack is the sudden death of part of the heart muscle. Each year about 1 million people have a heart attack and one-third of those attacks are fatal. In developed countries, heart attacks are the single most common cause of death. Men are more likely to suffer a heart attack than women, and smokers more than nonsmokers. Individuals whose immediate or extended family have had a heart attack are more likely to also have one. Uncontrollable risk factors include family history, old age, and being male. Controllable factors include smoking, overweight body, diet, and physical inactivity.
Anyone who has suffered a heart attack has an increased risk of suffering another one in the following few years, especially if lifestyle and dietary changes are not made to reverse the factors that caused the first heart attack. A heart attack requires immediate medical attention. Arrhythmia , an erratic heart rate, is common, and can be fatal if not controlled quickly. Special hospital coronary care units have trained staff to monitor and treat a recovering heart attack patient. However, some specialists believe these units are actually more stressful and prefer that patients, especially the elderly, be cared for elsewhere in the hospital or at home.

    Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
Myocardial infarction (MI) is caused by a blood clot in a heart (coronary) artery. Phone for medical help immediately if you get sudden severe chest pain. 'Clot busting' medication should be given as soon as possible to prevent damage to heart muscle. Also, other treatments help to ease the pain and prevent complications. Reducing 'risk factors' can help to prevent an MI.
What is a myocardial infarction? Myocardial infarction (MI) means that part of the heart muscle suddenly loses it's blood supply. Without prompt treatment, this can lead to damage to the affected part of the heart. MI is sometimes called a heart attack or coronary thrombosis. Understanding the heart and coronary arteries The heart is mainly made of special muscle. The heart muscle pumps blood into arteries (blood vessels) which take the blood to every part of the body. Like any other muscle, the heart muscle needs a good blood supply. The coronary arteries take blood to the heart muscle. The main coronary arteries branch off from the aorta. (The aorta is the large artery which takes oxygen-rich blood from the heart chambers to the body.) The main coronary arteries divide into smaller branches which take blood to all parts of the heart muscle. What happens when you have a myocardial infarction?

      Heart attack statistics:
It is a myth that heart disease is a man's disease. In fact, one in 12 women aged 45 to 64 has heart disease. One in four women over the age of 65 has heart disease. Currently, 6.6 million women have heart disease, states the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Consider the following facts about cardiovascular disease in women:
      • Coronary heart disease is the single largest cause of death for females in the United States. Almost 15 percent of girls ages six to 19 are overweight, which is a risk factor for heart disease. About 30 percent of girls in grades nine through 12 report using tobacco, which is a risk factor for heart disease. At menopause, a woman's heart disease risk starts to increase significantly. Each year, about 86,000 women ages 45 to 64 have a heart attack. Beginning at age 50, more women than men have an elevated cholesterol. Each year, about 314,000 women age 65 and older have a heart attack. About 14 million women age 65 and older have high blood pressure. The average age for women to have a first heart attack is about 70, and women are more likely than men to die within a few weeks of a heart attack.
