Aspirin for Reducing Your Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke: KNOW THE FACTS
You can walk into any pharmacy, grocery or convenience store and buy aspirin without a prescription. The Drug Facts label on medication products, will help you choose aspirin for relieving headache, pain, swelling, or fever. The Drug Facts label also gives directions that will help you use the aspirin so that it is safe and effective. But what about using aspirin for a different use, time period, or in a manner that is not listed on the label? For example, using aspirin to lower the risk of heart attack and clot-related strokes. In these cases, the labeling information is not there to help you with how to choose and how to use the medicine safely. Since you don't have the labeling directions to help you, you need the medical knowledge of your doctor, nurse practitioner or other health professional. You can increase the chance of getting the good effects and decrease the chance of getting the bad effects of any medicine by choosing and using it wisely. When it comes to using aspirin to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke, choosing and using wisely means:

Heart Infocenter Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction) How To Detect A Heart Attack The first hour of a heart attack is known as the "golden hour." If you get help during that first hour, your chances of recovery are greatly improved. Yet many people hesitate to get help when they first experience symptoms. They're afraid of the embarrassment of going to the emergency room and finding that nothing is wrong. So, it is important that you know the symptoms that may indicate that a heart attack is in progress. Many of the symptoms of heart attack can be brought on by digestive disturbances or other less serious conditions. But only sophisticated medical tests can determine for sure if you're having a heart attack. Heart attacks may vary from person to person, and from heart attack to heart attack. Women, for example, may experience "atypical' symptoms such as pain between the shoulder blades rather than crushing chest pain. This may result in them delaying seeking treatment. That is a great mistake. Heart attack is one instance where getting treatment promptly can mean the difference between life and death. If you are in doubt, err on the side of being more cautious and go to the emergency room and get yourself checked. We will try to describe some of the most common characteristics of heart attack here. Before that we will introduce the other pain called angina which is often precursor to a heart attack.

Pill seen as advance for 'mild heart attack'
March 19, 2001 Web posted at: 11:58 a.m. EST (1658 GMT) By Rhonda Rowland and Debra Goldschmidt CNN Medical Unit ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) A pink pill called Plavix could change the way people with chest pains are treated and save thousands of lives, researchers told a meeting of the American College of Cardiology Monday. These severe chest pains unstable angina and non-Q-wave myocardial infarction, also known as "mild heart attack" are the most common reason that people with heart problems go to the hospital. Plavix, also known as clopidegrel, is an anti-platelet drug that works similar to aspirin. "We studied patients with what's called acute coronary syndromes," said Dr. Shamir Mehta, a cardiologist with McMasters University. "These are patients who have chest pain, but it's not an actual heart attack. Although they're at risk of having a major heart attack within the next several days or the next year." The CURE (Clopidogrel in Unstable Angina to Prevent Recurrent Ischemic Events) trial found the drug could reduce further heart problems by 20 percent. Researchers said deaths, heart attacks and strokes could be reduced by nearly 100,000 if patients with acute coronary syndromes take both aspirin and Plavix. The study included 12,562 patients in 28 countries.

Heart attack more likely to kill women than men, study says
July 26, 1999 Web posted at: 5:48 PM EDT (2148 GMT) By Hacsi Horvath (WebMD) Younger women have a greater chance of dying of a heart attack than men, researchers have found. The study, published in this week's The New England Journal of Medicine, has revealed that of men and women younger than 50 years of age who suffered a heart attack, women were twice as likely to die from that heart attack. Three percent of the men in the study and 6 percent of the women died, reported lead author Dr. Viola of the Yale University School of Medicine and collaborating scientists from several major research hospitals. The difference in the number of deaths was less among older people. For example, 144 out of every 1,000 men aged 70 to 74 died of a heart attack; about 166 out of every 1,000 women in the same age group died, the results showed.

'Prehypertension' triples heart attack risk
Study: Slightly elevated blood pressure can lead to cardiovascular problems
WASHINGTON - People whose blood pressure is slightly elevated - a condition called prehypertension - have triple the risk of a heart attack compared to those with healthy blood pressure, researchers said Thursday. The finding, published in the journal Stroke, supports a move by federal and academic heart experts last year that defines prehypertension as blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89. High blood pressure starts at 140/90. "There is a gray zone, where you are not hypertensive but your blood pressure is not normal either," said Dr. Adnan Qureshi of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark, who led the study. "If we were to eliminate prehypertension, we could potentially prevent about 47 percent of all heart attacks," Qureshi added in a statement. The American Heart Association estimates that 59 million people in the United States are prehypertensive.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) The powerful drugs that beat back the AIDS virus may have a deadly drawback they may increase the risk of heart attack, according to a study in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine. However the findings may not be the final answer on whether the AIDS virus, HIV, or the drugs used to treat it, heighten the odds of heart problems. Another study published in the Journal earlier this year suggested that heart disease rates were not higher among people taking the latest HIV treatments. Smaller studies had suggested that the risk was real. The largest studies may have reached different conclusions because neither included a control group of uninfected people, said Peter Sklar and Henry Masur in an editorial in the Journal.

Stem cells to be tested in heart attack patients
Study is first to evaluate safety of new treatment in humans
WASHINGTON - A clinical trial to test the safety of treating heart attack damage with stem cells is about to get under way, following a study that showed the therapy helped in pigs. Two patients have been enrolled so far at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and a total of 48 are expected to take part across the country, said Dr. Joshua M. Hare, who is leading the study. "Anytime something new comes along there is a sense of excitement and that's the feeling that we have. And we obviously hope it will be borne out by the results," Hare said in a telephone interview. The process uses adult stem cells taken from the bone marrow. These cells, called mesenchymal cells, have been shown to give rise to a variety of cell types. While they don't have the potential to develop into as many cell types as embryonic stem cells, using them avoids the controversy over taking cells from a human embryo. In tests in pigs, stem cells taken from another pig's bone marrow were injected into the animal's damaged heart. After just two months, the stem cells had helped restore heart function and repaired damaged heart muscle by 50 percent to 75 percent.

The woman, who had a history of heart disease and high blood pressure, developed difficulty breathing and dehydration six days after receiving a smallpox vaccination, said Dr. Walter Orenstein, director of the CDC's National Immunization Program.

Man fakes heart attack with electric underpants
By Lester Haines Published Tuesday 5th July 2005 12:59 GMT According to the Guardian , 41-year-old Marcus Danquah had pursued Morphy Richards since 1999 after his wife found him sparko in the kitchen apparently as a result of a blast from a 42400 Comfi Grip iron. Danquah claimed he had been floored by the wrongly-wired iron, although later evidence suggested the alarm engineer had tampered with the iron so that it gave anyone who touched it an electric shock. The claimant's alleged electric shenanigans did not end there, however. Judge Hamilton explained: "The claimant was taken to Lincoln hospital and was put on an electrocardiogram which might have suggested that he suffered a heart attack."

Time to read the signs: Symptoms of heart attacks in women
May 12, 1999 Web posted at: 2:36 PM EDT (1836 GMT) In this story: Know the signs What to do Happy ending RELATEDS By Michelle Holcenberg (WebMD) Four years ago Nancy Loving had never heard the phrase "women and heart disease," despite having done public relations work for a number of health campaigns. That changed the day she woke up at 4 a.m. feeling light-headed and clammy. She might have passed it off as a bout of the flu if it hadn't been for the tremendous pain in her upper back. Thankfully she read the pain as a warning sign and had her teenage daughter drive her to the emergency room. When Loving arrived at the hospital, the doctor realized she was having a heart attack and immediately administered a blood clot-busting drug. At 48 she'd had no previous symptoms of heart disease, but all the warning signs were there she smoked, was overweight, got little exercise, and had a stressful job and a family history of heart attacks. And at the hospital she found out her cholesterol was at 313, well above the healthy range.
