What is a heart attack?
A heart attack occurs when there is a severe blockage in an artery that carries oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. The blockage is usually caused by the buildup of plaque (deposits of fat-like substances, or atherosclerosis ) along the walls of the arteries. The sudden lack of blood flow to the heart muscle deprives the heart of needed oxygen and nutrients. If the blockage is not opened quickly, the heart muscle is likely to suffer serious, permanent damage as areas of tissue die. The medical term for a heart attack is acute myocardial infarction . Acute means sudden, myo refers to muscle, and cardia refers to heart. The myocardium is the medical name for the heart muscle. Infarct means that (heart) tissue has been destroyed or killed because of the clogging of the blood vessels that supply oxygen to the heart.

Tea may reduce risk of death after heart attack
Legend has it that Buddhist priests help spread the custom of tea drinking outisde of China. From Rhonda Rowland CNN Medical Unit BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) Drinking at least two cups of tea a day may dramatically reduce a person's chances of dying following a heart attack, a study suggests. Researchers said they suspect properties found in black and green tea may be protecting the heart. "The results were more dramatic than I anticipated," said Dr. Kenneth Mukamal, who led the study, which was published Monday in the American Heart Association's journal, Circulation. "Even if the true effect of tea is less than what we found, it could still make a sizable difference in heart attack survival." The heavy tea drinkers in the study those who drank two or more cups of tea a day had a 44 percent lower death rate following their heart attack, compared with nondrinkers. The study found even a benefit in moderate tea drinkers. Those who drank fewer than 14 cups a week had a 28 percent lower death rate.

Web posted at: 11:05 p.m. EDT (0305 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) Patients who suffer mild heart attacks actually might be better off if they aren't subjected to invasive diagnostic procedures and surgical techniques such as angioplasty or bypass surgery, according to the results of a new study. In the study, reported in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers evaluated 920 patients at 17 Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals around the country who had a type of mild heart attack known as a non-Q-wave myocardial infarction. About 55 percent of all heart attacks are of that type. What they found was that patients who were given the most elaborate tests and treatments were two to three times more likely to suffer a second heart attack or die within 30 days than those who were diagnosed and treated with non-invasive therapies, such as exercise stress tests and drugs that dissolve blood clots. The lead author of the study, Dr. William Boden of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Syracuse, New York, termed those findings "astonishing."

Heart Attack
(En español) About 1.1 million Americans have heart attacks every year, and more than 40 percent of these people will die before reaching a hospital. But for those who do get to a hospital, advances in treatments have helped lower the number of deaths from heart attack. Today, those who recover from a heart attack are more likely to return to their past state of health than ever before. What causes a heart attack? A heart attack is also called a myocardial infarction (MI) or an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Many heart attacks are caused by a complete blockage of a vessel in your heart, called a coronary artery. A blocked coronary artery prevents oxygen-rich blood and nutrients from reaching a section of the heart. If blood cannot reach the heart muscle, it will die. By getting medical treatment quickly, you can reduce this damage, but once a section of heart muscle dies, the damage lasts forever.

Recovering from a Heart Attack
(En español) Studies have led to better therapies and more information about the heart after a heart attack or myocardial infarction (MI). Most patients stay in the hospital for about a week or less. Upon returning home, you will need rest and relaxation. A return to all of your normal activities, including work, may take a few weeks to 2 or 3 months, depending on your condition. A full recovery is defined as a return to normal activities. This will depend on how active you were before your heart attack, the severity of the attack, and your body's response to it. You will recover quicker if you avoid stress, temperature extremes, and conditions that place an added load on your heart.

Heart attack
Definition: A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when an area of heart muscle dies or is permanently damaged because of an inadequate supply of oxygen to that area.
Alternative Names: Myocardial infarction; MI; Acute MI
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Most heart attacks are caused by a clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscle). The clot usually forms in a coronary artery that has been previously narrowed from changes related to atherosclerosis . The atherosclerotic plaque (buildup) inside the arterial wall sometimes cracks, and this triggers the formation of a clot, also called a thrombus.

Story Tools RELATED Interactive: Guidelines for stroke prevention American Stroke Association National Stroke Association Journal of the American Medical Association (CNN) Studies have indicated that drinking alcohol in moderation can cut heart attack risks, and new research supports the theory that the same holds true for preventing strokes. "Light to moderate alcohol consumption may be protective against ... stroke while heavy alcohol consumption increases the risk," said Kristi Reynolds, a doctoral student at Tulane University and co-author of the study, which is published in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association. Tulane University researchers reviewed 35 studies from 1983 to 2002 and concluded that one to two drinks a day is associated with an almost 30 percent lower risk of stroke, the third leading cause of death in the United States. But the findings don't mean the public should start an alcohol habit. The research also found that heavy drinkers increased their risk of stroke by more than 60 percent, canceling out any health benefits of alcohol.

The heart is a complex, highly specialized, muscular organ in the chest that maintains the circulation of blood throughout the body. Heart attack, or acute myocardial infarction , is the death of heart tissue caused by a complete blockage in one of the arteries that supply blood to the heart (coronary arteries), resulting in an interruption in the blood supply to the heart. When heart tissue is deprived of blood-borne oxygen for longer than 30 minutes (called ischemia ), it begins to die.
