Heart Attack Overview
If you are having pain or discomfort in your chest, jaw, shoulder, arm, or back and think you may be having a heart attack, call 911 immediately. Do not delay or try to "wait it out."
If you think you are having a heart attack, seek help immediately. Do not ignore chest pain or discomfort. Time is of vital importance. Go immediately to a hospital emergency department. Do not attempt to drive yourself or have someone else drive you. Call 911 for emergency transport. The heart is a muscular pump located in the chest. Its job is to pump blood around the body via the circulatory system of blood vessels. The heart consists of 4 chambers: right atrium and right ventricle, and left atrium and left ventricle.
  • Blood is depleted of oxygen after circulating through the body. This blood returns into the right atrium. From there the blood flows into the right ventricle, which pumps the blood out to the lungs for oxygenation.
The oxygen-rich blood then returns to the left atrium. From there it flows into the left ventricle and is pumped out at high pressure into the arteries.

Are You At Increased Risk For A Heart Attack?
Take Dr. Donnica’s Decisionnaire ™ . Check off all the points that apply to you and take this list with you when you consult your physician. According to data from the US National Center for Health Statistics, two thirds of women in the US have at least one major coronary risk factor. This percentage rises with increasing age and menopause. In addition, more than one third of women aged 20-74 have high blood pressure, more than one in four women have high cholesterol, more than one in four women smoke, and more than one in four women are significantly overweight. Six out of ten American women are physically inactive. Be sure to discuss your risk for heart disease with your physician (sooner rather than later!) if you have 2 or more of these risk factors checked. I smoke packs per day, (or used to smoke) for years. I have diabetes. I have a sedentary lifestyle. I use sudden—but infrequent—exertion (e.g. shoveling snow). I am more than 10 pounds overweight.

Study estimates errors giving clot drugs may kill 1,500 heart attack patients annually
BOSTON (AP) About 1,500 heart attack victims in the United States may die needlessly each year because they receive the wrong doses of clot-dissolving drugs, a study estimates. While the medicines are clearly life-saving if given properly, the new work shows they can also prove fatal when nurses fail to administer the precisely correct dose at the right time a mix-up that apparently happens frequently in hectic emergency rooms.

How soon can I get back into my regular activities?
Most people can return to work and the activities they enjoy within a few months of having a heart attack. Others may have to limit their activity if the heart muscle is very weak. The amount of activity you can do will be based on the condition of your heart. Your doctor will work with you to develop a recovery plan. You will need to start slowly. For the first few days after your heart attack, you may need to rest and let your heart heal. As your heart heals, you'll be ready to start moving around again. A few days after your heart attack, your doctor may want you to move around more. You may do stretching exercises and get up and walk. You'll then slowly become more active based on advice from your doctor. Once you've gotten through the early period after a heart attack, your doctor may talk to you about how to be active within your limits. Your doctor will probably want you to do an exercise test, also called a stress test. During this test, your doctor will ask you to exercise (usually walking on a treadmill) while he or she monitors your heart. Based on the results, your doctor will develop an exercise plan for you.

Studies: Viagra doesn't raise heart attack risk
ORLANDO, Florida Despite concerns that the impotence drug Viagra could lead to heart attacks, several new studies show the drug doesn't hurt the heart in fact, it might help. In one study of 5,600 men in England, those who took Viagra were no more likely to have a heart attack than those who didn't. "Our analysis showed no evidence for an increased risk of [heart attack or ischemic heart disease]" the authors wrote. "The rates observed were similar to those for the general population of men in the [United Kingdom]." The research was done at the Drug Safety Research Unit, a private group in Southampton, England. The study was done at the request of the European Medicine Evaluation Agency, a regulatory agency of the European Union, and paid for by Pfizer, Inc., the company that makes Viagra, according to Dr. Saad Shakir, the lead author of the study. He added that Pfizer had no control over the study. The report was released at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology. After Viagra went on the market in 1998, reports came in to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of men taking Viagra, having sex, and then having heart attacks. At the time, cardiologists theorized that the men were having heart attacks because they weren't physically fit to have sex, but said more studies needed to be done.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Most heart attacks are caused by a clot that blocks one of the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that bring blood and oxygen to the heart muscle). The clot usually forms in a coronary artery that has been previously narrowed from changes related to atherosclerosis . The atherosclerotic plaque (buildup) inside the arterial wall sometimes cracks, and this triggers the formation of a clot, also called a thrombus. A clot in the coronary artery interrupts the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart muscle, leading to the death of heart cells in that area. The damaged heart muscle loses its ability to contract, and the remaining heart muscle needs to compensate for that weakened area.
