Causes
Fortunately, the violent attacks of vertigo usually lessen then stop in the later stages of the disease. Unfortunately, the patient’s hearing usually worsens over time, and the typical low-frequency roaring tinnitus that was episodic becomes permanent. Doctors refer to these permanent, leveled-off changes as Ménière’s "burnout."
Treatments
For some patients, surgery offers long-term relief from vertigo. However, some of the more invasive surgeries, such as the cutting of the balance nerve, can cause permanent hearing loss.

Hyperacusis Causes Excessive noise exposure appears to be a cause of this disorder. Some people report that their hyperacusis began immediately following a single exposure to intense noise, like that from a gun shot blast or an air bag deployment. Others became sound sensitive from long-term noise exposure. Hyperacusis patients find that their condition is worsened not only when they are exposed to noise, but also when they go too far to protect their ears from it. Silence can worsen the condition. Treatments back to top Hearing Loss Conductive Hearing Loss Sound waves are conducted to the inner ear either by air (through the ear canal) or by bone (through the skull and the bones in the middle ear). Conductive hearing loss is caused by something that stops incoming sound from traveling through the outer or middle ear on its way to the inner ear. Compacted earwax in the ear canal or the disease of otosclerosis in which the middle ear bones to fuse together can cause conductive hearing loss. When these conditions are corrected, hearing levels usually return to normal, and any associated tinnitus often lessens or goes away completely.

Hearing loss is deterioration in hearing; deafness is profound hearing loss. More than 28 million people in the United States are deaf or have hearing loss. Older people are the most affected: 30 to 40% of people aged 65 and older have significant hearing loss. Children also develop hearing loss, which can be detrimental to language and social development. Every year, about 1 of 5,000 people develops sudden deafness. Sudden deafness is severe hearing loss, usually in only one ear, that develops over a period of a few hours or less. Causes
Hearing loss has many causes. It may be caused by a mechanical problem in the external ear canal or middle ear that blocks the conduction of sound (conductive hearing loss). Blockage of the external ear canal can be due to something as mundane as an accumulation of wax or something as uncommon as a tumor. The most common cause of conductive hearing loss in the middle ear, especially in children, is an accumulation of fluid. Fluid can accumulate in the middle ear as a result of ear infections or conditions, such as allergies or tumors, that block the eustachian tube, which drains the middle ear.

Saraswathy Ramamoorthy with Judith A. Myers-Walls There are several types of hearing disorders. Some children with hearing disorders can hear a little, while others hear nothing at all. Some children with hearing disorders may be able to hear sounds well, but they will not be able to understand what they are hearing. Hearing takes place when sound waves enter the ear. Sound waves are created by any type of noise. The waves move through special bones in the ear and reach certain nerves. These nerves, then, send signals to the brain. So anything that keeps the sound waves from moving through the ear or the nerve signals from reaching the brain causes a hearing loss.

What Are Communication Disorders?
Communication disorders can be grouped into two main categories:
  • Hearing Disorders - People with Hearing Disorders do not hear sounds clearly. Such disorders may range from hearing speech sounds faintly, or in a distorted way, to profound deafness. Speech and Language Disorders - these disorders affect the way people talk and understand. These disorders may range from simple sound substitutions to the inability to use speech and language at all.
  • What Are the Signs of a Communication Disorder?
Hearing: Hearing loss might be suspected when a person does not always hear sounds such as telephone or doorbell ringing, turns his or her ear toward the source of sound, frequently asks the speaker to repeat, turns the TV or radio up too loud, or shows obvious signs of confusion or misunderstanding of speech. Speech and Language Disorders might be present when a person's speech or language is different from that of others of the same age, sex, or ethnic group; when a person's speech and/or language is hard to understand; when a person is overly concerned about his or her own speech; or when a person frequently avoids communicating with others.

    Abstract:
This paper presents SIVHA, a high quality Spanish speech synthesis system for severe disabled persons controlled by their eye movements. The system follows the eye-gaze of the patients along the screen and constructs the text with the selected words. When the user considers that the construction of the message has been finished, the synthesis of the message can be ordered. The system is divided in three modules. The first one determines the point of the screen the user is looking at, the second one is an interface to construct the sentences and the third one is the synthesis itself.

    Abstract:
ABSTRACT This paper concentrates on a small, but essential part within a large national Dutch research program on developmental dyslexia, namely the development of auditory test material for experiments with children from birth onwards. Since it is likely that the basis of any phoneme awareness in children is laid already in their first year of life, it is of great importance to follow the perceptual development of children at risk of dyslexia from birth onwards. In order to investigate the nature and origin of the perceptual deficit dyslexic people are afflicted with, a number of auditory tests are designed. The various steps in the development of the definite set of auditory tests, to be used in the actual research program, the rationale underlying these various steps, and first results of the pilot tests are described in the present paper.
