Headaches Headaches
Headaches are common during pregnancy, especially during the first and third trimesters. They rarely signal a serious problem. Causes of Headaches During Pregnancy
The cause of headaches is uncertain. During the first trimester, they may be caused by changes in your hormone levels and an increase in blood volume and circulation. Pregnancy-related headaches may disappear in the second trimester, when your body becomes used to the hormonal changes. During the third trimester, headaches tend to be related more to posture and tension from carrying extra weight. Some women often have tension headaches, which cause squeezing pain or a dull ache on both sides of the head or the back of the neck. The headaches may increase during pregnancy, especially if the woman experiences any of the following:
  • Stress Fatigue Caffeine withdrawal (especially if she suddenly stops or cuts down on coffee drinking or other sources of caffeine when she learns she is pregnant) Lack of sleep Dehydration (lack of fluids) Hunger or low blood sugar
Some women may have migraine headaches for the first time in early pregnancy. These headaches cause severe, throbbing pains on one side of the head. The woman often also has nausea or vomiting. But many women who are prone to migraines may notice that they improve during pregnancy. Some migraine sufferers may notice no change during pregnancy or may find that their headaches become more frequent and intense.

A headache is not a disease, but it may indicate that something is wrong. Headaches are common and generally are not serious. Approximately 50% to 75% of all teens report having at least one headache per month. However, more frequent headaches can be upsetting and worrisome for you. The most common headaches in your teens and early twenties are tension headaches and migraines. Sometimes these problems may require a visit to your medical provider. What causes headaches?
Headaches are most commonly caused by: Illness
Headaches often are a symptom of other illnesses. Viral infections, strep throat, allergies, sinus infection, and urinary tract infections can be accompanied by headaches. Fever may also be associated with headaches. Skipping meals
Even if you're trying to lose weight, you still need to eat regularly. Fad diets and irregular eating can make you hungry and also give you a headache. Not getting enough fluids, especially on hot days or with increased exercise, can lead to dehydration and cause headache.

"Typically, their profiles show they have been through 2 1/2 courses of physiotherapy, have tried three types of medication with varying degrees of success and side effects, and they've tried chiropractic. They report temporary relief with traditional treatment modalities, but the pain returns." The typical Myosymmetries client is simply not willing to accept the pain and mental setback of living with pain or dysfunction. "These people are motivated - they want to get better. Migraine Headaches, Vision Effects
Migraines and Vision Effects Overview
Migraine headache is one of the most common complaints in medicine today. Migraine headaches usually involve one side of the head. Various early symptoms may occur before a typical migraine episode. Other symptoms, together known as an aura, may also occur before a migraine headache, or they may begin when the headache starts. Recent studies show that 23 million Americans, approximately 18% of females and 6% of males, have at least 1 migraine headache a year. Migraine headaches are experienced by 64% of all females and 43% of all males who get severe headaches. The American Migraine Study showed that more than 85% of women and 82% of men with severe migraines had headache-related disability. The estimated cost of lost productivity is $1-13 billion a year. Male migraineurs (persons who get migraines) required 3.8 bedrest days per year; female, 5.6 days.
Race Another recent study showed that, among women, 20.4% of whites, 16.2% of African Americans, and 9.2% of Asian Americans met the criteria for migraine.

Causes and Treatments of Migraine and Related Headaches
Migraine Headaches Introduction
Headaches are very common; in fact, almost everyone will have a headache at some point. Headaches have been written about since the time of the Babylonians. Migraine headaches are even discussed in the Bible. Some very famous historical figures (for example, Napoleon Bonaparte) suffered from severe headaches. Experts do not agree about what causes headaches, but they agree that more studies are needed. Headaches are hard to study because of the following reasons:
  • People experience pain differently (in other words, a headache one person rates as a 10 on a scale of 10 might be rated as a 5 by another person).
Measuring headache pain in a standard way that accounts for the personal way people feel pain is almost impossible.
Studies are limited to human subjects.
Although headaches might rarely be due to infections or diseases, most are probably the result of an inborn protective mechanism responding to an external environmental stress. Headaches can be divided into 2 broad categories: primary headaches and secondary headaches. Primary headaches are not caused by problems with a person's internal structure or organs or by bacteria, viruses, or other organisms. Migraine, cluster, tension, and rebound headaches are types of primary headache. Secondary headaches are those caused by an underlying structural or organic disease.

Headaches
Headaches are a very personal thing. Each of us experiences a headache in our own way. They can be symptoms of some very serious medical problems, infections, the result of stress (Read about " Job Stress ") and sometimes just the lack of sleep or food. Headaches are not to be ignored. A sudden sharp pain could be the sign of a stroke (Read about " Stroke ") and persistent headaches need medical attention to find out why they are occurring. Brain tumors (Read about " Brain Tumors ") can also cause headaches, but not all do. In fact the American Cancer Society says that only 50 percent of brain tumors cause headaches. The vast majority of headaches however have causes other than stroke or brain tumors. The National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke (NINDS) says even though it feels like it, it is never the brain or the bones of the skull that actually hurt, since they lack pain-sensitive nerves. Headaches strike women more often than men. Men however have a greater incidence of cluster headaches. NINDS says that headache patients don't have to suffer, that about 90 percent can get relief. You can follow the links below to learn more about different types of headaches and what you can do about them. Cluster headaches: see Cluster

H eadaches are common during childhood and become more common and more frequent during adolescence. An epidemiologic survey of 9,000 school children found that one third of the children who were at least seven years of age and one half of those who were at least 15 years of age had headaches. "Frequent" headache was reported in 2.5 percent of children who were at least seven years of age and 15 percent of those who were at least 15 years of age. The prevalence of headache ranged from 37 to 51 percent in those who were at least seven years of age and gradually rose to 57 to 82 percent by age 15. Before puberty, boys are affected more frequently than girls, but after the onset of puberty, headaches occur more frequently in girls. Evaluation One third of children at least seven years of age and one half of adolescents at least 15 years of age have headaches.

This is a book Migraineurs have been waiting for. This is a book we want our families, doctors, friends everyone with whom we come in contact to read. The comment most frequently made when Migraineurs get together to talk is that we wish people who think Migraines are just a bad headache would have a Migraine so they'd know how mistaken they are. We wish just one migraine on every doctor who will ever treat a Migraine patient. This book is the next best thing. It is a compilation of descriptive quotes from Migraineurs frustrated, desperate, humorous, frightened, hopeful Migraineurs. Ms. Hatak approaches the topic of migraines with dedication, compassion and humor. She recognizes that Migraine has profound effects on the families and friends of Migraineurs as well. Chapters of the book include:
