KidsHealth Kids I Feel Sick!
You're having a perfectly good day when, all of a sudden, your head starts to ache. You can't concentrate on what you're doing because your head hurts so much. You might even feel sick to your stomach. What's going on here? Why do kids get headaches anyway? And most importantly, how can you make the hurting go away or keep it from happening? One thing's for sure: If you get headaches, you're not alone. Lots of kids have headaches from time to time. In fact, it's more unusual for someone not to have had a headache at least once before his or her early teens. Let's find out more about headaches and how you can stop them from happening. What Is a Headache?
Although it may feel like it, a headache is not a pain in your brain . Your brain tells you when other parts of your body hurt, but it can't actually feel pain . Most headaches happen outside your skull, in the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles that cover your head and neck. Sometimes the muscles or blood vessels swell, which means they get larger. They also can tighten or go through other changes that stimulate or put pressure on the surrounding nerves. The nerves send a rush of pain messages to your brain, and you end up with a headache.

Migraine Headaches
What most people think are migraine headaches are really tension headaches. "Real" migraine headaches are usually associated with nausea or vomiting and tend to be preceded by seeing flashes of light, zigzags, blind spots, or stars. Doctors call these preceding visual symptoms "auras," which are not nearly as much fun or as practical as what New Age people refer to as auras (and the nausea is no fun at all). Migraines are often triggered by psychological stress, but distinct from tension headaches, migraines tend to begin after a stressed person is finally able to relax; then that "relaxing" weekend or vacation becomes relaxation hell. During a migraine headache, blood vessels initially become overly constricted and then abnormally widened. You usually experience this pain on one side of the head, which can make you feel lopsided. Parents General Health
Life can be a pretty big headache these days - and that applies to your kids, too. Children's headaches are probably underreported, yet you've certainly heard your child complaining about having one. For you, the big question is when to be concerned about your child's headaches. How do you know when the problem is more than worry about an upcoming test or a fight with a friend? What kinds of headaches do children suffer from, and how should they be treated? When Should You Be Concerned?
Frequency and apparent cause are factors you can use to determine if your child's headaches are reason for concern. Most of the time, you can identify the cause of your child's headache, such as staying up too late, playing in the sun too long or bumping his head. Unexplained or recurring headaches over a short period of time, however, should be brought to the attention of your child's doctor. But how short is a "short" period of time? "If your 6-year-old is complaining of significant, unexplained headaches once a month or more often over several month's time, I think it would be reasonable to have that child seen by a doctor," says Dr. Hammond, a neurologist. "That frequency in an adolescent who may be under stress at school would not be as worrisome."

New research shows that spinal manipulation - the primary form of care provided by doctors of chiropractic - may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.
A report released in 2001 by researchers at the Duke University Evidence-Based Practice Center in Durham, NC, found that spinal manipulation resulted in almost immediate improvement for those headaches that originate in the neck, and had significantly fewer side effects and longer-lasting relief of tension-type headache than a commonly prescribed medication. License bill could create IT headaches
From... By Patrick Thibodeau (IDG) Congress this week is expected to consider legislation requiring national uniform standards for driver's licenses. The intent is to improve security, an issue of importance to businesses that swipe or scan driver's licenses to authenticate customers. But creating a driver's license standard would require law enforcement agencies and businesses such as airlines and convenience stores to adopt common scanning and identification systems to proof the licenses, and the trickle-down effect could be costly to both the public and private sectors. New Botox benefit? No wrinkles, no headaches
Studies suggest Botox can help people who suffer from migraines. (CNN) The goal was to help fade frown lines, but a number of studies have found that a cosmetic treatment could have medical benefits. Tuesday at the annual gathering of the American Headache Society, presenters are releasing findings of 13 studies that indicate Botox, a wrinkle-smoothing drug, rid a number of patients of severe headaches. One particular project suggests that people plagued with headaches who also had Botox injections for cosmetic reasons suffered from fewer migraines, experienced a reduction in the disabling effects of migraines and used less pain medication. Doctors who participated in the studies said they were encouraged about the relatively few risks of using Botox to curb headache pain. "The biggest advantage to Botox is its lack of side effects, especially compared to other medications," Dr. William Ondo of the Baylor College of Medicine said in an AHS press release. "It really is extremely safe and appears to be very effective for some people."

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) They are excruciating headaches that last for days and return at a moment's notice. Often, they surface in the teenage years and last through much of adulthood. It's a condition that has existed for centuries, doctors say. But only recently has it been given a name: "chronic daily headaches," or CDH, defined as migraines or neck- and head-squeezing tension headaches that are present 15 or more days each month. Some might think it sounds like just another excuse to skip school. But young people such as Rachel Gohmann, an 18-year-old college freshman from St. Cloud, Minnesota, know how serious the condition can be. Blinding headaches that often left her bedridden caused her to miss more than 100 days of her senior year of high school with her worst migraine lasting nearly a month.

National Headache Foundation WASHINGTON (AP) Teresa Lamesch endured a constant, incapacitating headache for almost two years. The slight touch of wind blowing against her forehead caused shocking jolts of pain. Bright sunlight or loud noises could make her retch. Heavy-duty narcotics and every other treatment failed to help. Then Dr. Sandeep Amin tried a last-ditch experiment. He hooked a tiny electrode to a needle and tunneled it under the skin by Lamesch's left eye, stopping atop the nerve responsible for her pain. Powered by a battery implanted near her collarbone, the device continually zaps that nerve with electric pulses blocking the Illinois woman's pain. "The minute he put it in, the pain was gone," says a grateful Lamesch. An estimated 20 million Americans suffer severe headaches, and as many as 10 percent of them have intractable head or facial pain. Treatment after treatment fails. Some are true migraines, which stem from inside the brain, but others mistakenly called migraines result from damaged nerves along the face or scalp.

Headaches common for many children, study finds
From Susan Deutchman Lilly CNN Medical Unit CINCINNATI, Ohio (CNN) Headaches, especially migraines, are a real and prevalent problem in children, according to new research released Monday. Scientists at Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio studied 577 children aged 8 to 18, who sought treatment for headaches. More than one-third were found to suffer from chronic daily headaches defined as having at least 15 headaches per month. Among children in that group, more than one-third had frequent but not daily headaches, nearly 44 percent had daily headaches, and almost 20 percent had continual headaches. Also, 92 percent of those having at least 15 headaches a month suffered from migraines. Migraine headaches are vascular headaches that last about 2 to 3 hours in youngsters, but about 12 hours in adults.
