Others got "minimal" acupuncture, with needles placed superficially at nonacupuncture points. A third group went on a wait list for acupuncture. Both acupuncture groups had similar drops in headaches, with benefits lasting months after treatment stopped.

What is a cluster headache?
A cluster headache is a rare type of headache that is more common in men. Cluster headaches start suddenly. The pain is usually behind or around one eye and is very severe. The eye and nose on the same side as the pain may become red, swollen and runny. Cluster headaches also cause restlessness. These headaches can be frightening to the sufferer and his or her family. A cluster headache can last a few minutes or several hours, but it usually lasts for 30 to 45 minutes. Cluster headaches typically occur at the same time each day for several weeks, until the "cluster period" is over. Cluster periods usually last 4 to 8 weeks and may occur every few months. At other times, no cluster headaches will occur. Return to top

What is a migraine headache?
A migraine headache is a severe pain felt on one, and sometimes, both sides of the head. The pain is mostly in the front around the temples or behind one eye or ear. Besides pain, you may have nausea and vomiting, and be very sensitive to light and sound. Migraine can occur any time of the day, though it often starts in the morning. The pain can last a few hours or up to one or two days.
  • Most often, migraine affects people between the ages of 15 and 55. Many people have a family history of migraine. They are more common in women. Migraine often becomes less severe and frequent with age.
What causes migraine?
One theory about the cause of migraine is the blood flow theory, which focuses on blood vessel activity in the brain. Blood vessels either narrow or expand. Narrowing can constrict blood flow, causing problems with sight or dizziness. When the blood vessels expand, they press on nerves nearby, which causes pain. Another theory focuses on chemical changes in the brain. When chemicals in the brain that send messages from one cell to another, including the messages to blood vessels to get narrow or expand, are interrupted, migraines can occur.

InnerSelf Magazine (enter email here) Sample Issue Discovering Nutritional Therapy by Patricia Quinn Nutritional therapy is a system of healing based on the belief that food, as nature intended, provides the medicine we need to obtain and maintain a state of health: our food is our medicine and our medicine is our food. Although some health problems require specific medication, many conditions can be relieved effectively with nutritional therapy. These include disorders ranging from chronic fatigue, energy loss, insomnia and depression, to backache, skin complaints, asthma, and headaches. Nutritional therapy will also benefit you if you have no specific illness, but want to maintain a state of optimum health. It is safe for babies and children as well as adults, and the change of eating patterns that is typically prescribed usually has far fewer side effects than synthetic medicines.

Traditional Chinese treatment reduces rate of headaches, study finds
LONDON - Acupuncture is an effective treatment for patients suffering from tension headaches, German researchers said on Friday. The ancient Chinese therapy that involves inserting very fine needles into the skin at specific sites on the body cut the rates of headaches by nearly half in a study of 270 people. "A significant proportion of patients with tension-type headaches benefited from acupuncture," said Dr. Wolfgang Weidenhammer, of the Center for Complementary Medicine Research at Technische Universitat in Munich. "Acupuncture was well tolerated and improvements lasted several months after completion of treatment," he added. Weidenhammer and his team compared traditional Chinese acupuncture, minimal acupuncture in which the needles are inserted superficially in the skin, and no treatment. The headaches rate in patients given the traditional treatment over eight weeks dropped by almost half. They experience 7 fewer days of headaches in the four weeks following treatment.
