Hay fever is the most common form of allergy, affecting up to 25 per cent of the population. Airborne allergies make summer a misery for at least 15 million people in the UK and are increasing at a rate of five per cent each year
'Allergic rhinitis', as it is also known, is now classified as a 'major chronic respiratory disease'. Its increase is hotly debated, but air pollution, especially the minute hydrocarbon particles from diesel engine exhausts, is thought to be a prime cause. Global warming, which means that summer starts earlier and may end advertisement
later, may be another factor.
A variety of hay fever treatments are available on the market. We look at ten of the best - both conventional and alternative - to help you choose the right one:
A recent review suggested that nasal corticosteroid sprays, which have revolutionised hay fever treatment, offer better relief of symptoms than oral antihistamines, and that using both together does not provide additional benefit compared with using nasal corticosteroids alone. There is no clear evidence to suggest one nasal corticosteroid spray is more effective than another - all have a similar potential for causing nosebleeds. Some sprays are significantly more expensive, so it's worth trying the cheaper ones first. Apply two sprays per nostril per day, preferably in the morning, increasing to a maximum of twice daily use if required. Once control of symptoms is achieved, reduce down to just one spray per nostril per day. Do not use for more than three months.

In allergic persons contact with pollen releases histamine from the tissues, which irritates the small blood vessels and mucus-secreting glands; symptoms may be aggravated by emotional factors. Antihistamine drugs may provide temporary relief, but the most effective long-range treatment is desensitization by injections of an extract of the causative pollen. Hay fever, like other allergic diseases, shows a familial tendency and may be associated with other allergic disorders, such as dermatitis or asthma; unless properly treated, about one-third of patients with hay fever develop asthma. Introduction: Hay fever
Hay fever: Hay fever is a common nasal allergy to airborne substances such as pollens or molds, and the term has also been used for other allergies such as to animal dander. It is very common with an estimated 35 million Americans with pollen allergies alone. Hay fever is also known as "allergic rhinitis". Symptoms are often similar to a cold with runny nose, tearing, sneezing, and so on. Another possibility that must be ruled out is asthma . There are also numerous subtypes of hay fever, and it is desirable to determine exactly what is causing the allergy. One key factor is whether symptoms are seasonal, especially for pollen allergies, or year-round as for some other types of allergies Researching symptoms of Hay fever: Further information about the symptoms of Hay fever is available including a list of symptoms of Hay fever , other diseases that might have similar symptoms in differential diagnosis of Hay fever , or alternatively return to research other symptoms in the symptom center Misdiagnosis and Hay fever:

Hay Fever Hay fever affects one in every five Americans. Over one billion dollars are spent each year in this country to treat thisdisorder. Millions of school and work days each year are lost sufferingfrom hay fever symptoms. These figures are probably anunderestimate because many sufferers attribute their discomfort to achronic cold. Although childhood hay fever tendsto be more common, this condition can occur at any age and usually occursafter years of repeated exposure to allergic substances. What is hay fever?

Day-time sedation and sleepiness may be exacerbated by the old-fashioned first-generation antihistamines. These are still the basic treatment for hay fever but the older versions, bought over the counter at the chemist, cause sedation. They also depress intellectual performance and may induce irritability while increasing the likelihood of accidents, including car crashes. They do nothing for the A-level results either. It is better to go to the doctor and obtain a prescription for one of the second-generation antihistamines without the side effects of drowsiness and reduced concentration. They can even be taken with a drink at a Marylebone Road pub.

Hayfever / Allergic Rhinitis
Back to Top General Hayfever / Allergic Rhinitis Information Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic response to pollen or mold that negatively affects the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and air passages. An estimated 32 million Americans suffer from the effects of hay fever, many of whom also suffer from other associated disorders, including asthma and dermatitis. Back to Top Possible Causes of Hayfever / Allergic Rhinitis Hay fever is caused by the body's reaction to seasonal allergens in the environment. Hay fever occurs each year during three distinct seasons. Tree pollens appear from February through May, depending on the local climate. Trees, grass and weeds appear in the late spring and summer months, when people tend to spend more time enjoying the outdoors, then in the fall months, ragweed pollen appears and remains a problem until the first hard freeze. Hay fever may be a problem during any or all of these seasons depending on the type of pollens a person is allergic to.

Hay fever
Hay fever is the name given for allergies caused by seasonal pollens. Wind-borne pollens from tree pollens, grasses, and weeds affect most hay-fever sufferers. Some are affected by direct contact to a plant with pollen. Airborne pollens are greatest during the peak of the pollinating season for the particular plant. Molds and fungus spores cause reactions in many people when airborne during the summer and fall months. Another name for hay fever is seasonal allergic rhinitis. Although the cause of allergy in hay fever usually comes from plant pollen, allergic rhinitis can have other causes. These can be things like feathers, dust mites, or animal dander. Sometimes it is hard to know whether a stuffy nose or itchy eyes is due to pollen or another cause. Hay fever symptoms include sneezing; itching and weeping eyes; stuffy or watery nose; itching of the ear canals, nose, throat, or mouth; and cough. Fatigue and a feeling of exhaustion may also be experienced.

What is Hay Fever?
Hay fever - or allergic Rhinitis - is an allergy. It's most associated with summer pollen but can be triggered by household dust, animal hairs, etc. Exposure to these cause the immune system to over-react in its production of histamines. Some people react to a wide range of allergens, others find their symptoms triggered only by very specific pollens. Symptoms of hay fever include sneezing, an itchy nose and runny eyes. Like all allergies it can be dangerous if severe and you should first consult your doctor.
Treating Hay Fever Symptoms
There are many different over the counter hayfever treatments available to buy from your pharmacist. These include anti-histamines, decongestants and anti-inflammatory sprays. Hay fever treatments are normally sold in the form of pills or nasal sprays. Whilst many people - including me - take these routinely without problem, others are concerned about possible long term side-effects, suppression of the immune system and building up of resistance.

Something to sneeze at: Seasonal allergic rhinitis
For somewhere around five million Canadians the end of winter is one of those good news/bad news stories.
Here are some frequently asked questions about seasonal allergies and what you can do about them.
Why do I start sneezing as soon as the weather starts warming up?
Basically, your body is objecting to the sexual activity of trees (early to mid-spring), grasses (late spring and early summer), and ragweed (late summer until the first frost).
Or you might be sensitive to spores, which are the reproductive particles or seeds of fungi or moulds. Spores can cause even more problems than pollen in some people, because they are smaller and can get deep into your lungs and possibly trigger asthma.
In some cases, people who are allergic to birch and alder pollen can develop oral allergy syndrome. You may have this if you've noticed allergy symptoms after you've eaten an apple, plum, nuts, celery or carrots.

Traffic may worsen hay fever and asthma By J. Raloff As roads grow ever more congested, commutes lengthen. Even though individual vehicles spew less pollution, the air remains choked with combustion byproducts. Now, urban denizens have yet another reason to hate traffic: It pollinates their air. A new study finds that cars and trucks stir up a lot of dust, much of it laden with allergy-causing plant pollens and molds. Over an 8-month period, Ann G. Miguel of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and her colleagues vacuumed dust from paved roads at three Southern California sites—a relatively rural road in Riverside, a residential street in Long Beach, and a highway running through an industrial portion of downtown Los Angeles. Each thoroughfare was chosen because it ran directly in front of a pollution monitor measuring the quantity of particulate matter in air. From earlier studies led by atmospheric chemist Glen R. Cass, also of Caltech, he and his colleagues knew how to calculate what share of the particles measured at a monitoring station come from road dust thrown into the air. In laboratory tests, they determined how much of the vacuumed dust could trigger an allergic response. Their new data, reported in the December Environmental
