What is hay fever? inflammation and irritation in the delicate linings of the nasal passage, throat and eyes. Hay fever commonly appears around the age 11-12, the symptoms usually peak in the 20's and early 30's then gradually disappear. However, more and more people are beginning to experience hay fever for the first time in their 30's. Hay Fever affects 15 - 20% of the population in the United Kingdom and is the most common of allergic con ditions. Those who suffer from hay fever may also have symptoms of asthma What other types of allergic rhinitis are there? Allergic rhinitis is a general term given to an allergic reaction that causes inflammation of the nose. There are two types of allergic rhinitis, seasonal allergic rhinitis and perennial allergic rhinitis. Seasonal rhinitis is when you only experience symptoms during the spring and summer pollen season. When the majority of people say they have hay fever, it usually means seasonal allergic rhinitis. Perennial Rhinitis Perennial rhinitis is when you experience symptoms all year around. Perennial rhinitis is usually caused by indoor

Hayfever (Allergic Rhinitis and conjunctivitis). by Dr Adrian Morris. The problem with allergies such as Hay fever and Allergic Rhinitis is that it is considered to be a trivial and inconsequential disease. Symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes and nose with sneezing and blockage are obviously not life threatening, but affect up to 25% of the population and are the cause of significant disability and cost to society. Patients may also experience fatigue, irritability, as well as mood, cognitive and sleep disturbance in addition to the nasal, ocular and throat symptoms. Allergic rhinitis has important co-morbid associations such as chronic sinusitis, glue ear, asthma exacerbations, nasal polyps, sleep apnoea and dental malocclusion. Chronic Allergic Rhinitis sufferers often have typical facial features called the "allergy face". Nasal blockage and sinus congestion predispose to the bluish discolouration of the lower eyelids called "allergic shiners", the characteristic linear creases under the eyelid are referred to as "Dennes lines". Constant nasal rubbing typifies the "allergic salute" and results in a prominent "nasal crease" across the nose. Continuous nasal blockage causes "nasal" speech and mouth breathing with disturbed sleep. This results in a high arched palate and the "long face syndrome" with dental crowding and malocclusion ("Buck teeth"). Allergic rhinitis may be either seasonal or perennial:

Hay fever and rhinitis
Every year millions of people in the UK experience the discomfort of hay fever. Some people only have symptoms during the summer. Others have hay fever-like symptoms all year round (called 'perennial allergic rhinitis'). This information describes the symptoms and causes of both conditions. It offers practical advice on how to avoid your triggers and find the treatment that's right for you.
Case study: Doreen Moore and her daughter Claire
I developed hay fever three years ago and have had the summer sneezes ever since. I tend to get an itchy nose and my eyes water. I take antihistamines as soon as my symptoms start. I'm quite lucky because if I take my antihistamines quickly enough they really do keep my hay fever under control. My ten-year-old daughter Claire isn't so lucky. Claire has severe hay fever. From early April she takes mild antihistamines and then takes increasingly strong ones as the summer goes on. She also has to use a nasal spray and eye drops. Unfortunately, pollen is a trigger for Claire's asthma too so she has to adjust her asthma medication during the summer. Claire's hay fever has a big impact on her own life and ours. We've all had to learn how to adapt. For example, Claire's eyes run and her nose itches as soon as she steps outside, and she's learned that she's better off reading indoors while the rest of us are out in the garden.

The Facts about Hay Fever
Q: What is hay fever? A: Each spring, summer, and fall, tiny pollen grains are released from trees, weeds, and grasses and travel on currents of air to fertilize other plants. In some people, inhaling these pollens triggers a type of seasonal allergic rhinitis called pollen allergy, commonly known as hay fever. Allergic rhinitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes in the nasal passages, which causes swelling, sneezing, itching, irritation and a runny nose. About 16.7 million office visits to health care providers each year are attributed to allergic rhinitis. Q: Do pollen allergies occur only in the spring? A: No. Pollen grains can be dispersed into the air in the spring, summer and fall, depending on the type of tree, grass or weed. For example, ragweed is a common cause of pollen allergy reactions in the fall. In mild climates, some plants pollinate in the winter as well.

Do be aware that just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t cause side effects in some. Always proceed cautiously with any medication, herbal or otherwise. Most of these herbs may be found at your local natural foods store, or go online to find an herbal purveyor. Butterbur may be a very effective treatment for hay fever. It was recently compared to an antihistamine and did just as well in controlling hay fever symptoms, but did not produce drowsiness. This plant contains substances that are known to affect the immune system, and it has also been used to treat asthma. Stinging nettle was thought to be as good as, or better than, previous hay fever medications by half of the patients tested. The dose used was two 300 mg capsules taken whenever the symptoms were experienced. This is not a conclusive study, but it does suggest that stinging nettle might be a useful treatment. It is probably a safe herb.

Go to PDF Version Allergic Rhinitis Allergic rhinitis (commonly called hay fever) is an inflammation or irritation of the mucous membranes that line the nose. Common symptoms include sneezing; a stuffy or runny nose; itchy eyes, nose and throat; and watery eyes. You may also have a nasal voice; breathe noisily; snore; feel chronically tired; have a poor appetite; feel nauseated; have frequent headaches; and, have some difficulty hearing and smelling. CAUSES
Allergic rhinitis happens when an allergen (an allergy-producing substance, such as pollen) causes your body to defend itself by producing antibodies. When an allergen and an antibody combine, your body releases histamine and other chemical substances into your bloodstream, which causes an allergic response. Pollen, dust, mold or other substances that can be inhaled, are common allergens that cause symptoms. Seasonal allergic rhinitis usually results from tree, grass or weed pollen. With this type of rhinitis, symptoms will decrease with the arrival of cold weather. Perennial allergic rhinitis can cause year-round symptoms. This allergic reaction is the result of indoor irritants such as feathers, mold spores, animal danders (hair and skin shed by pets) or dust mites.

IMPORTANT The information provided is of a general nature and should not be used as a substitute for professional advice. If you think you may suffer from an allergic or other disease that requires attention, you should discuss it with your family doctor. What is hay fever?
Strictly speaking, "hay fever" (also known as allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis) describes the itchy eyes, nose and mouth, sneezing and runny, blocked nose that occurs during spring and summer when grass pollens are blowing around. Since similar problems can be caused by other allergens like house dust mite and animal proteins, "Hay fever" can in fact occur all year around. There are only a few options for treating hay fever
  • Avoid the cause
  • Treatment without medication
  • Medication
  • Immunotherapy injections (to "switch off" the allergy)

Hay Fever
What is hay fever?
Hay fever is usually an allergic reaction to pollens of trees, grasses, and weeds. Sometimes it is an allergy to mold spores. Hay fever may occur any time of the year. It generally occurs in the spring, summer, or fall. Hay fever is also called seasonal allergic rhinitis.
How does it occur?
Allergic symptoms result from reactions of your body to substances that it sees as foreign. Substances that cause an allergic reaction are called allergens. The allergens that cause hay fever are pollen and mold. They float in the air and are spread by the wind. The type of pollen in the air depends on the growing season and area of the country. Tree pollens cause most spring hay fever. In the summer, grass and some weed pollens are usually the cause. From late summer to the first frost, other weed pollens cause hay fever.

Hay Fever
Hay fever is caused by an allergy to pollen. Common symptoms are a runny nose, itchy nose, blocked nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Common treatments are an antihistamine nose spray or medicine and/or a steroid nose spray. Other treatments are sometimes used if these common treatments do not work so well.
What is hay fever? Strictly speaking, hay fever (also called seasonal allergic rhinitis) is caused by an allergy to grass or hay pollens. Grass pollen is the most common cause (May to July). However, the term is sometimes used when allergies are caused by other pollens such as from tree pollens (March to May). Symptoms are due to the immune system reacting to the pollen. Cells on the lining of the nose and eyes release histamine and other chemicals when they come in contact with pollen. This causes inflammation in the nose (rhinitis) and eyes (conjunctivitis). Who gets hay fever? Hay fever is very common. It often first develops in the teenage years. Symptoms return for a season each year, but it eventually goes away or improves in many cases (often after having had symptoms each season for several years). What are the symptoms of hay fever?
