Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome?
It is a severe life-threatening illness cause by a hantavirus now named Sin Nombre virus. It causes acute respiratory disease, and is carried in wild rodents such as deer mice. Is this a new disease?
This virus was first recognized and identified in 1993 when a cluster of cases was reported in the four corners area of the southwestern U.S. Investigations completed since the virus was first identified in 1993 indicate the presence of Sin Nombre virus throughout most of the continental U.S. and the presence of the virus has now been documented as far back as 1959. How does a person get a hantavirus infection?
Rodents are the natural hosts for all hantaviruses. Humans are thought to be infected from exposure to rodent droppings, urine, saliva, either through aerosols or direct inoculation. Rodents may be chronically infected with hantavirus and shed the virus for months. Can this disease be spread from person to person?
No, there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission for any of the known hantaviruses. There are no documented cases of hantavirus being transmitted from infected patients to health care workers.

Alternate Names : Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome Definition Hantavirus is a disease characterized by flu-like symptoms followed by respiratory failure.
Hanta Virus
Respiratory System Overview Hantavirus has probably caused people to get sick for years in the United States, but it was not recognized until recently. A 1993 outbreak of fatal respiratory illness on an Indian reservation in the Four Corners area (the border of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona) led epidemiologists to the discovery of hantavirus as the causative agent. Since that discovery, hantavirus disease has been reported in every western state, and in many eastern states. Hantavirus is carried by rodents, particularly deer mice, and is present in their urine and feces. The virus does not cause disease in the carrier animal. Humans are thought to become infected when they are exposed to contaminated dust from the nests or droppings of mice.

Hantavirus is a potentially deadly disease caused by a virus carried by rodents. Hantavirus can cause Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS) which causes the lungs to fill with fluid and can cause respiratory failure. The hantavirus was first detected in 1993 in the Four Corners area of the southwestern United States. Between 1993 and 2005, 387 cases have been reported in the United States. South Dakota has reported a total of 9 cases of HPS since the disease was first detected. Who gets hantavirus infection?
You can be young or old, male or female, any race, living almost anywhere to be exposed to the hantavirus. Anything that puts you in contact with rodent droppings, urine, or nesting materials is a risk for HPS. What are the symptoms of hantavirus infection?

Hantavirus infection is a rare but serious, life-threatening illness. It is believed to be caused by breathing in the virus carried by airborne particles of rodent urine, droppings or saliva. The disease does not cause illness in pets and it cannot be passed from person to person or from pets to people. The best protection against the virus is to prevent all rodents from entering your home or cabin and to carefully clean and disinfect where they have been. The primary carrier of the hantavirus is the deer mouse but it is possible that other rodents may sometimes carry the virus. It a person is infected the disease will generally appear within four or five days. Early symptoms resemble those of the flu, including a fever of 38 to 40 C (101 to 104F), body aches, and chills. Hantavirus progresses from these symptoms to severe difficulty in breathing. Medical attention is required. Who is at risk?

How to Protect Yourself from Hantavirus
Hantavirus infection is a serious, life-threatening illness caused by inhaling the virus. The virus is carried in the airborne particles of rodent urine, droppings or saliva. The primary carrier of Hantavirus is the deer mouse. It is 10 to 22 cm. in length from head to tail, ranges in color from pale gray to reddish brown, and has white fur on its belly, feet and underside of the tail. However, all rodents including squirrels, rats, chipmunks and other kinds of mice should be treated as if they might carry the virus.
Who is at risk?
  • People living in or visiting houses, cottages or camps where rodents are living or have been. Campers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts visiting areas with rodents. Individuals who clean barns, sheds/outbuildings or other grain storage areas where rodents are likely to live.

Commentary
In May and June of 1993, an outbreak of a severe respiratory illness was reported in the Four Corners region of the U.S., that region of the country where Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado abut. Mortality was in excess of 75%, with many deaths in previously healthy adults between 20 and 40 years of age. The cause was quickly shown to be a hantavirus by astute scientists at the CDC and NIH. Serological evidence at first showed that the disease might be caused by a hantavirus; this was confirmed by using PCR to compare nucleic acid sequences of the presumed etiologic agent with the sequences of known hantaviruses. Interest in the hantaviruses stems from the Korean War when (in 1951) U.N. troops in Korea came down with an illness characterized by high fever, severe headache, myalgia, vomiting, and hemorrhaging that ends in renal failure and death in 7% of cases. This disease was called hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS)
What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome or HPS?
Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, or HPS, is a severe illness that is caused by a virus called hantavirus. This rare disease was first identified in the southwestern United States in 1993. Although the virus has been present for a long time, it has been recognized recently. HPS was first found in Canada in 1994, when 3 cases were reported in British Columbia. Since then about 50 more cases have been found, mostly in the western provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. The disease is considered to be extremely rare - only about 400 cases have been reported in all of the United States and Canada.
What are the symptoms of HPS?
HPS begins as a "flu-like" illness. In the early stage of the disease, a person may have a fever, sore muscles, headaches, nausea, vomiting stomach and have shortness of breath. As the disease gets worse, fluid builds up in the lungs, making it harder to breathe. In North America, about 1 out of 3 people with HPS have died.

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome
What is hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS)? HPS disease is a rare but extremely serious illness of the lungs caused by a family of viruses known as hantavirus. In 1993, the first United States cases were diagnosed in the southwestern part of the country. Isolated cases of HPS are now being diagnosed in other parts of the country and several different types of hantavirus have been identified. Who can get HPS? Where is the virus found? Persons who have exposure to wild rodents or rodent-infested areas are at highest risk of getting HPS. Hantavirus is carried by infected rodents, primarily deer mice in the southwest US, cotton and rice rats in the south, and the white-footed mouse in the northeastern coastal area. The virus, which is found in the animal's urine, saliva and droppings, gets in the air as mist or dust when droppings or nests are stirred up. How is the virus spread? The main way that HPS is spread to humans is by breathing air contaminated with rodent urine, droppings or saliva. It can also be transmitted by handling rodents or by touching your nose or mouth after handling contaminated materials. A rodent's bite can also spread the virus. There is no evidence that cats, dogs, farm animals, or insects transmit the disease to humans. You cannot get HPS from another person. What are the symptoms of HPS disease?
