Tuberculoid Leprosy - one or a few hypopigmented hypoesthetic macules with well defined borders. The muscles in the body bec ome weak and fatigued
Lepromatou Leprosy - symmetric skin nodules, loss of hair, loss of skin appendages. ( severe ) little or no pain accompanies the rash. The rash will resemble a large tinea eruption.

Robben Island is Seen by Many as South Africa's Cradle of Democracy
Terry Crawford-Browne Back to Previous Page Once a place of banishment, Robben Island five miles off the coast of Cape Town has become almost a shrine for hundreds of thousands of visitors to South Africa. The limestone quarry worked by the prisoners became, surreptitiously, a place of learning and of political debate and, consequently, is nicknamed the University of Robben Island. The Island has recently been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and is now annually visited by over 200,000 foreign tourists. Despite its inauspicious past, Robben Island is increasingly regarded as the cradle of South Africa's new democracy, a place of transformation from its image of despair to a symbol of hope and peace. Half a mile from the prison and quarry is the Church of the Good Shepherd, also known as the Leper Church. Built in 1895, when there were about 500 leprosy* patients quarantined on the Island in appalling conditions, the Church was abandoned in 1931 when the patients were forcibly removed. By then, they had come to regard the island as their home. The Church was restored last year, and re-consecrated in November by the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Revd Njongonkulu Ndungane who was, himself, a political prisoner on Robben Island during the 1960s.

What is Hansen's disease?
Hansen's Disease has been a dreaded condition since the beginning of man's recorded history. Learn more about this illness by reading this article.
Hansen's disease, commonly referred to as leprosy, is a chronic infectious disease caused by the mycobacterium leprae bacteria. This disease can cause severe deformity of the feet, hands and face. The bacteria that cause leprosy thrive in cool areas of the body such as the skin, nerves near the skin surface and in oral and nasal mucus membranes. The infection leads to a loss of sensation in the affected areas. Leprosy was once a widespread disease but is now generally classified as a tropical disease, with the larger numbers of cases concentrated in Brazil, India, Nigeria, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Only about five percent of the people who are infected with the bacteria actually develop the disease. The immune system generally prevent the development of leprosy. However, it has been found that some people are naturally more susceptible to the infection, while others carry a natural immunity. When an individual does develop symptoms, they are usually mild. The disease is only fatal in rare cases or in cases where other complications have taken hold. Hansens's disease has two forms-tuberculoid (paucibacillary Hansen's disease) and lepromatous (multibacillary Hansen's disease).

On the evening of January 8, 1787 several dozen members of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Bengal celebrated St. Johns Day, one of Masonrys most important festivals, at the Harmonic Tavern, øthe handsomest house in Calcutta.Ó As with their counterparts in England and America on such occasions, members drank toasts, indulged in good natured horseplay and swapped stories. Among the celebrants was the newly appointed Governor General of India, Lord Charles Cornwallis. Although famous for his decisive defeat by George Washington at Yorktown in 1781, Cornwalliss most enduring legacy would emerge from the reforms he would promulgate during his period as a colonial administrator in India. Among the several Masons that sent their regrets at not being able to attend the St. Johns Day festivities in Calcutta that evening was the øGovernor of Chinsurah, Brother Titsingh.Ó This was Isaac Titsingh, the Dutch East India Company director who had previously been stationed at Deshima in Japan and Batavia (Jakarta) and would subsequently become Dutch ambassador to the Imperial Court in Beijing.

Hansen's Disease (Leprosy)
Clinical Features This chronic infectious disease usually affects the skin and peripheral nerves but has a wide range of possible clinical manifestations. Patients are classified as having paucibacillary or multibacillary Hansen's disease. Paucibacillary Hansen's disease is milder and characterized by one or more hypopigmented skin macules. Multibacillary Hansen's disease is associated with symmetric skin lesions, nodules, plaques, thickened dermis, and frequent involvement of the nasal mucosa resulting in nasal congestion and epistaxis. Etiologic Agent A bacillus, Mycobacterium leprae , that multiplies very slowly and mainly affects the skin, nerves, and mucous membranes. The organism has never been grown in bacteriologic media or cell culture, but has been grown in mouse foot pads. Incidence In 2002, the number of new cases detected worldwide was 763,917. In 2002, 96 cases occurring in the United States were reported to CDC. In 2002, WHO listed Brazil, Madagascar, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Nepal as having 90% of cases.

The Mycobacterium Research Program, better known as the Laboratory Research Branch, at the National Hansen's Disease Programs relocated to modern laboratories and the collegial atmosphere of the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Veterinary Medicine in Baton Rouge in 1992. The Research Program is comprised of 32 individuals, including support personnel and 10 investigators positioned in multiple disciplines. The unique Hansen's disease (leprosy ) research resources, consisting of conventional and transgenic "knock-out" mouse colonies, >500 athymic (nude) mice infected with five different strains of M. leprae M. leprae -infected armadillos. Research interests focus on a number of goals relevant to world leprosy after the year 2000. New molecular and immunological assays are being developed to aid preclinical diagnosis and provide molecular epidemiology tools in a future era where classical clinical diagnostic expertise will be diminished. Improvements in future chemotherapy are being sought by testing new drugs and exploring the pharmacokinetics of existing and new regimens. M. leprae's
