What causes bad breath
Most adults suffer from bad breath occasionally, although it may affect up to a quarter of adults on a regular basis. Bad breath is usually brought on by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth. However, there are several other possible causes that affect the airways, oesphagus and stomach that can also lead to bad breath. Factors that affect the mouth and cause bad breath
  • Dental decay Gum disease. Food stagnation between the teeth. Dry mouth. Excessive bacterial activity on the tongue, possibly due to postnasal drip (catarrh coming down the back of the throat from the sinuses and nasal passages). Throat or tonsil infection. Catarrh.
  • Factors that affect the airways and cause bad breath
  • Sinusitis Polyps.

    Bad Breath / Halitosis
Back to Top General Bad Breath / Halitosis Information Bad breath (halitosis) is a condition that occurs when an offensive odor is detected in the mouth. Bad breath is a common problem which affects everyone at one time or another. It typically occurs first thing in the morning, when a person is dieting or when a person is unable to brush his teeth after eating. Back to Top Possible Causes of Bad Breath / Halitosis Causes of bad breath include some foods (such as garlic, onions and meats); tobacco use; and bacteria and plaque build-up in the mouth, teeth, gums and on dental appliances. Bad breath is also common when there is decreased saliva production in the mouth. This tends to occur most often first thing in the morning; after drinking alcoholic beverages; when a person is hungry or dieting; or when a person is dehydrated. Problems in the mouth that can lead to bad breath include oral infections, dental problems, gum disease and some dental cancers. Bad breath can also point to conditions affecting other areas in the body, like nasal problems, diabetes, HIV, liver disease, digestive system dysfunction and lung problems. Bad breath can also indicated poor overall health.

Known commonly as bad breath, halitosis may also be indicative of lung or sinus infection, uremia, or cirrhosis of the liver. The minty odor of acetone on the breath is a symptom of diabetes mellitus. Successful treatment of halitosis consists of eliminating or controlling the underlying cause. Proper diet and dental hygiene are often helpful. Mouthwashes and scented toothpastes mask the condition but do not alleviate it. A physician should be consulted for persistent cases of halitosis.

    Halitosis
Bad breath (also known as halitosis) is breath containing an unpleasant odor. This odor can strike periodically or be persistent, depending on the cause. In many patients, the millions of bacteria that live in the mouth (particularly on the back of the tongue) are the primary culprits of bad breath. The mouth's warm, moist conditions make an ideal environment for these bacteria to grow. About 80 percent of bad breath is caused by something in the mouth. Some types of bad breath, such as "morning mouth," are considered to be fairly normal, and they are usually not health concerns. The "morning mouth" type of bad breath occurs because the saliva that regularly washes away decaying food and odors during the daytime diminishes at night while you sleep. Your mouth becomes dry, and dead cells adhere to your tongue and to the inside of your cheeks. Bacteria use these cells for food and expel compounds that have a foul odor. In addition, bad breath can be caused by the following:

Annual sales of mouthwashes and related over-the-counter products in the United States exceed $500 million.[1] The etiology of halitosis is localized to the oral cavity in 47 to 90 percent of patients.[2] Non-oral or systemic causes are responsible for the remaining cases. Patients sometimes present with a primary complaint of halitosis. More commonly, however, persons with halitosis are unaware of their offensive breath. Although generally thought of as merely a social handicap related to poor oral hygiene or disease of the oral cavity, halitosis may indicate a serious systemic illness that requires diagnosis and treatment.[3] Unfortunately, physicians[4] and dentists[1] too often ignore halitosis. In the absence of an overt oral source for the bad breath, the physician must remember to consider other organic etiologies. This article presents the most common nonpathologic and pathologic causes of halitosis and their management.

Halitosis More than 90 million people suffer from chronic halitosis or bad breath. In most cases it originates from the gums and tongue. The odor is caused by bacteria from the decay of food particles, other debris in your mouth, and poor oral hygiene. The decay and debris produce a sulfur compound that causes the unpleasant odor. Bad breath is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene, but can also can be caused by retained food particles or gum disease. Proper brushing including brushing the tongue, cheeks, and the roof of the mouth will remove bacteria and food particles. Flossing removes accumulated bacteria, plaque and food that may be trapped between teeth. Mouth rinses are effective in temporary relief of bad breath. Consult your dentist and/or physician if the condition persists.Bad breath also may occur in people who have a medical infection, gum disease, diabetes, kidney failure, or a liver malfunction. Xerostomia (dry mouth) and tobacco also contribute to this problem. Cancer patients who undergo radiation therapy may experience dry mouth. Even stress, dieting, snoring, age and hormonal changes can have an effect on your breath. An odor that comes from the back of your tongue may indicate post-nasal drip. This is where the mucus secretion, which comes from the nose and moves down your throat, gets stuck on the tongue and causes an odor. Bad breath originating in the stomach, however, is considered to be extremely rare. Saliva is the key ingredient in your mouth that helps keep the odor under control because it helps wash away food particles and bacteria, the primary cause of bad breath. When you sleep, however, salivary glands slow down the production of saliva allowing the bacteria to grow inside the mouth.

Jonathan Ames hits seven Christmas parties in eight days (lightweight!), and gives the full report, sort of: I was assaulted with so much bad breath that I feel I've gone through four years' worth of dental school and I'm ready to hang a shingle. I imagine that must be one of the first things dentists have to be trained for and screened for ability to withstand halitosis. There's probably some kind of machine they put young dentists in front of which blows bad-breath fragrances into their faces until they're immune, kind of like what they did to that fellow in Clockwork Orange, but in reverse.
