Definition
Gynecomastia is the development of prominent breast tissue in the male.

Considerations
The most common cause of gynecomastia in the male is puberty. The condition may occur in one or both breasts and begins as a small lump beneath the nipple, which may be tender. The breasts often enlarge unevenly. Gynecomastia during puberty is not uncommon, is self-limiting, and usually goes away over a period of months. In newborns, breast development may be associated with milk flow ( galactorrhea ). This condition usually lasts for a couple of weeks and in rare cases may persist until the child is two years old. It is caused by exposure to maternal hormones.

Men who have large, woman-like breasts have a condition called gynecomastia. Many are self-conscious about their body, embarrassed to wear fitted shirts or even refuse to go swimming. Though the exact cause of gynecomastia is unclear, the condition has been linked in adults to obesity and certain medications. Surgery to correct gynecomastia is considered cosmetic and generally not covered by insurance. liposuction to remove excess fat or a scalpel to cut away the extra glandular tissue, depending on the make-up of your breast. In either case, some men need to have extra skin removed during the same procedure. Talk with your doctor about what procedure will help you look your very best.

Gynecomastia Gynecomastia is an enlargement or excess of male breast tissue. While this condition is not often discussed, gynecomastia affects 40 to 60 percent of all men, to some varying degree. Gynecomastia involves developing an excess amount of glandular tissue or fatty tissue in the breast area. There are many potential causes of gynecomastia and often times that exact cause of gynecomastia is unknown. During puberty, a temporary excess amount of glandular breast tissue can develop in young boys. This is normal and generally disappears within a few months to a year. Gynecomastia can be caused by steroid abuse, obesity, excessive marijuana or alcohol consumption, tumors, genetic disorders, chromosomal abnormalities, chronic liver disease, castration, and medication side effects. There are a variety of types of medication that may cause gynecomastia in men. Men who have gynecomastia may be eligible to receive gynecomastia surgery to reduce the size of their breasts. A patient who is interested in this type of procedure may wish to speak to a certified plastic surgeon to determine the cause of gynecomastia. If a patient's gynecomastia is the result of obesity, a surgeon may recommend that the patient first make attempts to correct the problem through exercise and weight loss. If the cause of gynecomastia is prescription or other drugs, those problems might need to be addressed before plastic surgery is considered.

It is not a tumor but rather just an increase in the amount of a man's breast tissue. Usually, men have too little breast tissue to be felt or noticed. A man with gynecomastia has a button-like or disk-like growth under his nipple and areola, which can be felt and sometimes seen. Gynecomastia, common among teenage boys, is due to changes in hormone balance during adolescence. The same condition is not unusual in older men and is also due to changes in their hormone balance. Male Breast Reduction - Gynecomastia
Some men have deposits of excess breast tissue and fat in their breasts, giving them a female form. While sometimes related to medicines or a hormonal imbalance, these inciting causes are not often found to be a factor. Most cases are a matter of bad luck! Correction of this problem known as Gynecomastia is usually able to be accomplished with Liposuction. In rare cases, there is so much extra skin that this must be reduced as well as the internal deposits. This is an outpatient procedure requiring only 3-6 days of recovery. Before and After - Liposuction Only Several products are available that may aid in reduction of visible scarring. These include Cica Care silicone gel sheeting, Kelocote silicone cream, and my preference which is ScarGuard ( WWW.ScarGuard.com ) . ScarGuard combines several of these modalities and is easier to use. Whichever one you choose, I believe that scarring is, in fact, improved by using these types of products. If you are having surgery I recommend that you review the information at WWW.ScarGuard.com

Gynecomastia is defined as breast development or enlargement in males. It may be present on one side or both sides of the body and may cause the breast to be tender. Breast development due to being overweight is referred to as pseudogynecomastia or false gynecomastia. This type of breast development due to weight gain is not the same thing as the condition referred to as gynecomastia. What causes gynecomastia?
Breast formation in males is most commonly caused by hormonal changes that occur at puberty or as part of the aging process. If the balance between the hormones estrogen and testosterone is changed, breast development can occur. Gynecomastia may also be caused by certain medications (e.g., psychiatric medications, ulcer drugs, digoxin) or by an underlying disease (e.g., low testosterone state) or a breast cancer tumor. Who is affected by gynecomastia?
Development of breast tissue in males is most often associated with adolescent boys and aging men. In adolescent boys, breast enlargement is relatively common and typically goes away on its own in 2-3 years. This is often called pubertal gynecomastia. Why is it important to know about gynecomastia?

Peer Review Status: Internally Peer Reviewed This is a condition in which males develop enlarged breasts. This is quite common in adolescents and is often first noted at the onset of puberty. The medical literature reports rates as low as 8 percent and as high as 65 percent. Most of these cases are due to changes in the hormonal secretion with temporary excess of estrogen like substances or relative deficiencies of testosterone-like substances. This imbalance can lead to temporary increases in the amount of ductal tissue present on one or both sides. The majority of cases show enlargement in both sides. The degree of enlargement varies widely but in the most severe cases C or D cup breasts may be present. The milder cases usually resolve in three months to a year although it is not unusual to see some breast enlargement for up to three years. By the late teens most of these patients will have normal appearing male breasts without any form of treatment. Because young boys are reluctant to discuss their concerns they are likely to simply try to hide their abnormal appearance with clothing.

A 58-year-old man presented with a palpable left breast mass.
Imaging Findings
Mammography: craniocaudal view
Mammography: mediolateral oblique view
Demonstration mammogram from another patient
Anteroposterior plain radiograph of the pelvis
MRI of the humerus

This man's mammogram demonstrates a focal opacity ( arrow ) in the central retroareolar region of the left breast. The more typical mammographic appearance of gynecomastia is a flame-shaped opacity which extends and expands posteriorly from the nipple. This flame-shaped opacity is better demonstrated on a craniocaudal mammogram from another patient ( arrow ). (The lead marker denotes the nipple.) This man's diffusely dense bones are demonstrated on a plain radiograph of the pelvis. A magnetic resonance image (MRI) of his humerus shows diffusely hypointense T1-weighted signal ( arrows ) in the bone marrow caused by the presence of innumerable mast cells.
Differential Diagnosis
Etiologies for a unilateral breast mass in a man include abscess, hematoma, lipoma, sebaceous cyst, gynecomastia, and carcinoma.

Teens Just for Guys
Ah, puberty. It can be a very interesting time in a guy's life, what with all the changes going on. In fact, it seems like every day something on your body grows bigger or hair begins sprouting somewhere. Each day brings a new change or two, and it can sometimes feel like it's hard to keep up. It doesn't happen to every guy, but one of these changes can be the development of breast tissue. It's called gynecomastia (pronounced: guy-nuh-ko- mas -tee-uh) and it's completely normal - and almost always temporary. So how exactly does a guy happen to develop breast tissue? What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which breast tissue forms in guys, usually due to normal hormonal changes during puberty. Hormones are chemicals produced by your body's glands. In a guy, hormones produced in the testicles are responsible for the physical changes that begin to take place during puberty - facial hair, muscle development, a deepening of the voice, and the lengthening of the penis, for example. Guys and girls produce both androgens (hormones that help develop and maintain male characteristics) and estrogen (a hormone that is responsible for most female characteristics).
