The peripheral nerves convey sensory information (e.g., pain, temperature) from the body to the brain and motor (i.e., movement) signals from the brain to the body. GBS is characterized by weakness and numbness or tingling in the legs and arms, and possible loss of movement and feeling in the legs, arms, upper body, and face. Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradicalneuropathy (CIDP), is considered to be a related form of Guillain-Barre syndrome. It is much less common than GBS, and evolves much more slowly and usually is longer lasting. Some CIDP patients experience periods of worsening and improvement, and individual relapses are often confused with GBS.

Overview GBS is short for "GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME" (pronounced Ghee-Yan-Barray), also called acute idiopathic polyneuritis and Landry's ascending paralysis. It is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves, those outside the brain and spinal cord. The syndrome occurs sporadically. It can't be predicted, and can occur at any age and in either sex. It can vary greatly in severity from the mildest case, that may not even be brought to a doctor's attention, to a devastating illness with almost complete paralysis that brings a patient close to death. Because it is so rare, most of the public has never heard of the illness, or if they have, know little about it. Yet for those affected, the illness can be severely frightening and disabling. Causes The causes of Guillain-Barre Syndrome are not known. A variety of events seem to trigger the illness. Many cases occur a few days to a few weeks after a viral infection. These infections include the common cold, sore throat and stomach and intestinal illnesses with diarrhea. Vaccinations may also precipitate its onset.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome
What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a disease of the nervous system due to damage to the myelin sheath around nerves. The myelin sheath acts as an insulator the same as rubber or plastic around electrical wires. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is the most frequent acquired (as opposed to inherited) nerve disease (neuropathy). In many cases it follows shortly after a virus infection. It is also rarely associated with immunizations, surgery, and childbirth. What causes Guillain-Barre Syndrome? The cause of Guillain-Barre Syndrome is unknown, but it appears that there is an autoimmune (one's own immune system attacks the body) reaction. What are symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome include weakness, typically beginning in the legs and progressing upward. The weakness is accompanied by decreased feeling (paresthesia). Reflexes are lost, for example, the hammer to the front of the knee will not induce a kick. In severe cases breathing can be affected enough to require a ventilator and rarely the heart can be affected. The maximal degree of weakness usually occurs within the first 2-3 weeks.

What is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a neurological disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. It is a devastating disorder because of its sudden and unexpected onset. The disorder can develop over the course of hours or days, or it may take up to three to four weeks. The stage of greatest weakness is usually within the first two weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest. What are symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome?
The first symptoms include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs, which sometimes spreads to the arms and upper body. The symptoms may increase in intensity until the following does or does not occur - in these cases, the disorder is considered a medical emergency:
  • muscles cannot be used at all the patient becomes nearly paralyzed it may become difficult to breathe blood pressure and heart rate are affected
Although symptoms can become life threatening, partial recovery is possible from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome (however, some degree of weakness may still be present).

Guillain-Barre syndrome
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis , which often follows an infectious illness.
Alternative Names: Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; Acute idiopathic polyneuritis; Infectious polyneuritis; Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause denervation (kill the axon part of the nerve cell), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.
The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It often follows a minor infection, usually a

In 1859, Jean B.O. Landry, a French physician, described a disorder in which the nerves of the legs, arms, neck, and breathing muscles were paralyzed. Georges Guillain, Jean Alexander Barre, and Andre Strohl discovered the characteristic abnormality of increased protein but normal cell count in the cerebrospinal fluid in 1916. Several names have been given for the syndrome including acute idiopathic polyneuritis, acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, Landry’s ascending paralysis, and Guillain Barre syndrome.

Causes
The causes of Guillain Barre syndrome are unknown. Many researchers theorize that the autoimmune reaction in which macrophages and T-cells attack myelin in the peripheral and cranial nerves is associated with a bacteria or virus, as many cases occur a few days to a few weeks after an infection including the common cold, sore throat, and stomach and intestinal viruses with vomiting and diarrhea. The virus might induce the demyelination via a possible mimicry between the effector virus and a human ganglioside. Salloway and colleagues (1996) discovered that the lipopolysaccharide structure of some strains of Campylobacter jejuni , specifically, the terminal structures of the core oligosaccharide, resemble the human gangliosides GM1 and GD1a. A possible mimicry also exists between the influenza A NS2 protein and a sequence region of the human P2 (myelin) protein thought to be neuritogenic in animals and mitogenic for lymphocytes from patients with GBS. This finding could provide a possible link between the large number of cases of GBS associated with the 1976 USA swine flu vaccination program (Weise and Carnegie, 1988).

Guillain-Barre Syndrome
Guillain-Barre (ghee-yan bah-ray) syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system. The first symptoms of this disorder include varying degrees of weakness or tingling sensations in the legs. In many instances the weakness and abnormal sensations spread to the arms and upper body. These symptoms can increase in intensity until the muscles cannot be used at all and the patient is almost totally paralyzed. In these cases the disorder is life threatening potentially interfering with breathing and, at times, with blood pressure or heart rate and is considered a medical emergency. The patient is often put on a respirator to assist with breathing and is watched closely for problems such as an abnormal heart beat, infections, blood clots, and high or low blood pressure. Most patients, however, recover from even the most severe cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome, although some continue to have some degree of weakness. Guillain-Barre syndrome can affect anybody. It can strike at any age and both sexes are equally prone to the disorder. The syndrome is rare, however, afflicting only about one person in 100,000. Usually Guillain-Barre occurs a few days or weeks after the patient has had symptoms of a respiratory or gastrointestinal viral infection. Occasionally surgery or vaccinations will trigger the syndrome. The disorder can develop over the course of hours or days, or it may take up to 3 to 4 weeks. Most people reach the stage of greatest weakness within the first 2 weeks after symptoms appear, and by the third week of the illness 90 percent of all patients are at their weakest.
