    Graves' Disease
    Thyroid
Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism in the United States. Other causes of hyperthyroidism include multinodular goiter, toxic solitary nodules of the thyroid, and functioning thyroid cancer. Other rare causes for hyperthyroidism include TSH-secreting pituitary tumors and hCG-secreting trophoblastic tumors of the ovary or testis. Struma ovarii is another rare cause of hyperthyroidism. All of the latter conditions cause increased thyroid radioactive iodine uptake on scanning. Additional causes of hyperthyroidism include subacute thyroiditis and certain phases of Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as exogenous thyroid hormone intake and iodide-induced hyperthyroidism (due to kelp, amiodarone x-ray contrast). Symptoms of Graves' disease are those of hyperthyroidism and may include anxiety, restlessness, irritability, emotional instability, fatigue, muscle weakness or cramps, increased appetite, palpitations and heat intolerance. Patients may also have a fast heart beat, atrial fibrillation, tremor, an eye stare and changes in hair. Osteoporosis tends to occur if hyperthyroidism left untreated. There may also be increased sweating and increased numbers of bowel movements, shortness of breath on exertion and weight changes. Usually there is weight loss, but occasional patients gain weight ironically due to an increased appetite. Periodic paralysis with low potassium may occur in men who are of Asian, Filipino, or Native American ethnic backgrounds. Menstrual irregularities and cardiac angina are also common.

Graves' Disease is a type of autoimmune disease in which the immune system over stimulates the thyroid gland, causing hyperthyroidism . Over-activity of the thyroid gland is also sometimes called "diffuse toxic goiter." The thyroid gland helps set the rate of metabolism (the rate at which the body uses energy), and when it is over-stimulated, it produces more thyroid hormones than the body needs. High levels of thyroid hormones can cause difficult side effects. This is an extremely rare disease that tends to affect women over the age of 20. The incidence is about 5 in 10,000 people.
What is an autoimmune disease?
An autoimmune disease occurs when the body's immune system becomes misdirected and attacks the very organs, cells, or tissues that it was designed to protect. About 75% of autoimmune diseases occur in women, most frequently during their childbearing years.

The thyroid secretes the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which control body metabolism . Thyroid disease is not common during pregnancy. This is because the immune system, of which the thyroid is a part, is depressed in pregnancy in order to protect the developing fetus. However, untreated hypothyroidism during pregnancy may impair full and normal development to at least a slight degree. As a result of the loss of this protective effect at the end of pregnancy, there is a tendency for thyroid disease to occur in those women who have had previous thyroid disease. Thyroiditis is particularly common after pregnancy. In most cases, so called "post partum thyroiditis" tends to get better after a few weeks although recurrence in subsequent pregnancies is highly likely.
    Fertility
Women who have been treated for Graves' disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis can become pregnant, since normal fertility is restored after treatment. Graves' disease should be treated with radioactive iodine or by surgery before pregnancy can occur.

Welcome to my new site, it has a better look and I have finally been able (mentally etc.) to face the work of the overhaul. I haven't got my personal Graves Disease Journal up here yet, but I am working on getting that back as well. To read the old site and my journal go here This site is meant to be a gateway. There is SO MUCH information about Graves Disease and I can not put it all here. I am just hoping to provide a place to start. One thing is, if you have been diagnosed, your best weapon is reading, reading and more reading! Any knowledge that you can gather about how this disease works and how to treat will help you in the long run. The doctors that generally treat Graves are called Endocrinologists. Many times they specialize in Diabetes, so they may not have all the newest information about Graves. This disease is not simple and it may be up to you to help educate your Doctor so you can receive the best treatment possible. This disease (and many others I'm sure) require that you be proactive in the healing process.
