Gonorrhea Overview
Gonorrhea is one of the most common diseases passed from one person to another during sexual activity.
  • The overall rate of gonorrhea is now increasing, after a steady decline for the past 2 decades, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 355,000 cases of gonorrhea were reported in the United States in 1998. More than 5% of people between the ages of 18 and 35 have an infection with gonorrhea that they do not know about. New strains are more easily spread and are resisting treatment even with strong antibiotics. Infection with gonorrhea is commonly found among the following groups:
    • Adolescents and young adults
People (often poor) living in urban areas and Southern states
      African Americans
      Drug users

Gonorrhea
What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a disease caused by germs or bacteria. The infection is usually found at the opening of the uterus, or in the tube that carries urine from the bladder. It can also infect the rectum, throat, and pelvic organs. To find out if you have gonorrhea, you must be examined by a doctor or nurse and have tests taken.
How is it spread?
Gonorrhea can be spread easily from one infected person to another by having unprotected sex - not using a condom - with someone who has this disease. Gonorrhea can be spread at any time while a person is infected, whether or not he or she has symptoms. A person can still become infected again in the future even if the person and infection are treated.
What are the symptoms?
In some cases there are no symptoms, and a person can have gonorrhea and not know it. When symptoms develop, they usually occur two to five days after the person becomes infected, but may not appear for up to thirty days. Women may notice a change in the amount and colour of fluid from the vagina, pain while urinating, and/or unusual menstrual bleeding. Men may notice a creamy white or yellow fluid from the penis and a burning feeling while urinating. In both men and women, a gonorrhea infection in the rectum may cause itching, pain, bleeding, or a stringy white fluid when having a bowel movement. Gonorrhea infections in the throat may cause a sore throat.

Gonorrhea in Women
Medical Author: Carolyn Janet Crandall, MD, FACP
Medical Editor: William C. Shiel Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What are sexually transmitted infections?
In this article, the terms "sexually transmitted infections" and "STIs" are replacing the outdated terminology "sexually transmitted diseases" and "STDs." Sexually transmitted infections (STIs, formerly sexually transmitted diseases or STDs) are infections that can be transferred from one person to another through sexual contact. Sexually transmitted infections have probably been around for thousands of years, but the most worrisome, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS, has only been recognized since 1984. It is important to realize that sexual contact includes more than just sexual intercourse (vaginal and anal). Sexual contact includes kissing, oral-genital contact, and the use of sexual "toys," such as vibrators. Most STIs are treatable. However, even the once easily cured gonorrhea has become resistant to many of the older traditional antibiotics. Other STIs, such as herpes, AIDS, and genital warts (all of which are caused by viruses), have no cure. These infections can be silent, causing no symptoms, or they can cause a spectrum of mild to severe symptoms, even death. Syphilis, AIDS, genital warts, herpes, hepatitis, and even gonorrhea have all been known to cause death. Therefore, a public awareness and education about these infections and the methods of preventing them is important.

Gonorrhea
What is it?
Gonorrhea is caused by the bacteria , Neisseria gonorrhea. It can infect the genital tract, throat or rectum and is spread by having unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex with an infected person. If a pregnant woman is infected, her baby can get a serious eye infection. An infected person can pass on the disease for years until they are properly treated. This infection is rarely, if ever, passed from one woman to another during sex. It is also called GC or Clap.
What are the symptoms?
Many women don't have symptoms. Some possible symptoms if you do have them are:
  • increased vaginal discharge
  • frequent or painful urination
  • unusual odour
  • bleeding
  • lower abdominal pain
  • sore throat
  • rectal discharge
Men are more likely to have symptoms which can occur 2 days to 6 weeks after infection. Men may have painful frequent urination and yellowish-white discharge.
How is it diagnosed?
A swab of the infected area can be tested in the laboratory.

Gonorrhea/Clap
Gonorrhea also known as the clap, is a sexually transmitted bacterial disease, which differs in males and females. Symptoms The symptoms in males include a yellowish discharge from the penis, which causes painful, frequent urination. Symptoms can develop from two to thirty days after infection. A few percent of infected men have no symptoms. The infection may move into the prostate, seminal vesicles, and epididymis, causing pain and fever. Untreated, gonorrhea can lead to sterility.
Less than half the women with gonorrhea show any symptoms, or symptoms so mild they just ignore. Early symptoms include a discharge from the vagina, some discomfort in the lower abdomen, irritation of the genitals, pain or burning during urination and some abnormal bleeding. Women, who leave these symptoms untreated, develop severe complications. The infection will usually spread to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). Gonorrhea is the most common cause of female infertility.
Some early symptoms of this infection are lower abdomen pain, fever, nausea, and pain during intercourse.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases: A Hot Issue GONORRHEA *** NEWSFLASH: Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea on the Rise What is it? Gonorrhea is a curable bacterial infection. It is extremely common in the United States, second only to Chlamydia in the number of new cases reported each year. Young adults are at greatest risk for the infection, as over 75% of cases occur in 15-24 year olds.
Prevention The infection is spread through oral, vaginal or anal sexual contact, and can be transmitted even without ejaculation. Limiting the number of sexual partners and using latex condoms every time sexual contact occurs can significantly reduce the risk of contracting the bacteria.
Symptoms Within 2-5 days after infection, symptoms usually appear. In some cases, however, it may take as long as thirty days before any symptoms are present.
