Chlamydia (chlamydia trachomatis) is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections. This bacterial infection affects 3-4 million people each year. It is the most common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), ectopic pregnancy and infertility in women. Chlamydia is a frequent cause of testicular and prostate infections and is the most common cause of sterility in men. GONORRHEA
Gonorrhea (neisseria gonorrhoeae) is a bacterial infection that often co-exists with chlamydia. Approximately 600,000 new gonorrhea infections occur every year. These bacteria can also cause PID, ectopic pregnancy and infertility in women and testicular and prostate infections in men. TRANSMISSION/SYMPTOMS
Chlamydia and gonorrhea are transmitted through vaginal, anal or oral sexual contact. Both infections cause symptoms for some people while other people have no recognizable symptoms at all. For women, symptoms include a change in the color or texture of vaginal discharge, irregular bleeding or spotting, vaginal burning, or pain and burning with urination. Pelvic pain may indicate that the bacteria have progressed into the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Because it is more common that women may not have recognizable symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that all sexually active adolescent and young adult women be tested during their annual exam. Any woman having new or multiple partners should request testing.

Gonorrhea What you need to know:
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection. It is caused by a bacterium. More than 700,000 people in the United States are infected each year. The bacteria can grow in several places in the body, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), urethra (urine canal), mouth, throat, eyes and anus. Most women who have gonorrhea do not have symptoms. Some women:
  • Feel pain or burning when they urinate Have more discharge from the vagina than usual Have bleeding or spotting from the vagina
Women who have gonorrhea can develop serious complications if the infection is untreated. They can get pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID is an infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries in the woman’s pelvis. It can cause pain and, if the tubes scar, infertility . Untreated gonorrhea can also spread to the blood or joints. This condition can be life threatening. Health care providers use lab tests to diagnose gonorrhea.

GONORRHEA In Illinois, the incidence of gonorrhea has declined significantly since 1975, when 64,560 cases were reported. Yet, more than 23,000 cases of the disease were reported in the state in 1999. It is estimated that another nearly 20,000 cases, mostly among teenagers and young adults, go unreported each year. The approximate annual cost of gonorrhea and its complications in Illinois is over $3 million. What is gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium, Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus), that grows and multiplies in moist, warm areas of the body such as the cervix, urethra, throat or rectum. In women, the cervix is the most common site of infection. However, the disease can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease. This, in turn, can cause infertility and ectopic pregnancy. How is gonorrhea spread? Gonorrhea is most commonly spread during genital contact, but it can also be passed from the genitals of one partner to the throat of the other during oral sex. Gonorrhea of the rectum can occur in people who practice anal intercourse and may also occur in women due to the spread of the infection from the vaginal area. Gonorrhea can be passed from an infected woman to her newborn infant during delivery. When the infection occurs in children, it is most commonly due to child abuse.

What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea (gon-o-RHEE-a) is caused by a kind of bacteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae , which can infect the penis, vagina, cervix, anus, urethra, or throat. Sometimes it is called "the clap" or "the drip." Despite these funny names, untreated gonorrhea is a serious health risk. It affects about 600,000 women and men in the U.S. every year.
What are the symptoms of gonorrhea?
Often, gonorrhea has no symptoms. Eighty percent of women and 10 percent of men with gonorrhea show no symptoms. Many people are not aware that they are infected. When symptoms do occur, they may begin one to 14 days after infection.

Definition: Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (commonly known as "the clap") caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhea . See also gonorrhea - male
Alternative Names: The clap - female
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Gonorrhea is one of the most common infectious bacterial diseases and is most frequently transmitted during sexual activity, including vaginal intercourse and both oral and anal sex. Gonorrhea is a reportable disease and all state governments require that cases of diagnosed gonorrhea be reported to the health authorities (State Board of Health). This allows for adequate follow-up and testing of sexual contacts.
There are almost 400,000 cases of gonorrhea reported to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) each year in the United States. There are probably many cases that are treated but not reported. The total number of cases is thought to approach 1,000,000; if unreported cases are included, some estimates reach 2,000,000. A rate of 400,000 cases per year means that 1 out of every 687 Americans has gonorrhea. A rate of 2 million means that 1 in every 130 Americans are infected.

PDF Version of this Fact Sheet Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the bacterium that causes gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is spread by sexual contact and from mother to baby during delivery Gonorrhea is found in infected body fluids from the penis, vagina, mouth or rectum, and spread by direct sexual contact. A baby's eyes can get infected if his or her mother has a cervical infection at the time of birth. Signs and symptoms to look for:
  • Discharge from the penis, vagina, or rectum Sore throat, possibly with difficulty swallowing For women, cramps or pain in the lower abdomen Pain in the testicles in men Pain when urinating
Symptoms can start from 2 to 7 days after infection. Many people can have gonorrhea and spread it without having any symptoms at all. Gonorrhea may get into the blood and may rarely settle in other parts of the body causing infection of the joints, skin, heart, and brain. In women, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) may occur, causing chronic pain and making it very difficult to have children.

What is Gonorrhea? Gonorrhea is one of the most well known STDs. Commonly referred to as 'the clap', gonorrhea is thought to infect about 1.3 million people in the USA every year. About half of those cases are never reported. The disease is caused by the bacteria neisseria gonorrhea which causes inflammation of the glands. The bacteria grows and multiples in the warm moist areas of the body. It primarily affects the urethra in men and the cervix in women. Gonorrhea of the rectum is also possible for those who practice anal sex. It is an STD that is both treatable and preventable. Featured Video What is Gonorrhea? Transcript What are the symptoms of Gonorrhea? The symptoms of gonorrhea depend on what part of the genital area is infected. If the gonorrhea has infected the urethra, a man or woman may experience a burning sensation while urinating and additional discharge from the urethra. The burning may be extremely or mildly painful, and is complicated by the fact the patient may feel the need to urinate more often. The discharge from the urethra may be clear or milky and range in color from white to yellow-green. The groin will sometimes feel swollen and tender. There may, however, be no symptoms present (as in about 50% of women by some accounts) and some individuals may unknowingly infect their partner(s).

Gonorrhea is one of the common bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is caused by the bacterium neisseria gonorrhoeae and can infect the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes of women and the urethra, mouth, throat, and rectum of both men and women. Because the signs of gonorrhea often go unnoticed, an individual can develop serious health complications before they recognize they are infected. Is it common?
Each year approximately 650,000 people in the US are infected with gonorrhea. Approximately 75% of all reported gonorrhea cases in the US are found in individuals 15 to 29-years-old. The highest rates of infection are usually found in 15 to 19-year-old women and 20 to 24-year-old men. How is it transmitted?

Screening for Gonorrhea
Release Date: 2005 Summary of Recommendation Supporting Documents
Summary of Recommendation
  • The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that clinicians screen all sexually active women, including those who are pregnant, for gonorrhea infection if they are at increased risk for infection (that is, if they are young or have other individual or population risk factors; go to Clinical Considerations for further discussion of risk factors). Rating: B Recommendation Rationale The USPSTF found insufficient evidence to recommend for or against routine screening for gonorrhea infection in men at increased risk for infection (go to Clinical Considerations for discussion of risk factors). Rating: I Recommendation Rationale : The morbidity from undiagnosed and untreated genital gonorrhea infection is lower in men than in women. Clinical symptoms are more likely to lead to diagnosis and treatment in men; thus, the prevalence of asymptomatic infection in men is lower. There is fair evidence that non-invasive screening tests can accurately detect gonorrhea infection and good evidence that antibiotics cure gonorrhea infection. Potential harms of screening and treatment for gonorrhea include false-positive test results, anxiety, and unnecessary antibiotic use. There is insufficient evidence (due to a lack of studies) to quantify the magnitude of these potential harms. The USPSTF judges the magnitide of the potential harms of screening men for gonorrhea to be small. Given the low prevalence of asymptomatic infection in men, the USPSTF could not determine the balance of benefits and harms of screening for gonorrhea infection in men at increased risk for infection.

GONORRHEA What is gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that may also be referred to as the “clap” or “the drip”. What causes gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucous membranes of the body – such as the eye, rectum/anus, mouth, throat, vagina, and penile opening. Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. How do people get gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is spread through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal). This includes penis-to- vagina, penis-to-mouth, penis-to-anus, mouth-to-vagina, and mouth-to-anus contact. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to child during birth. Gonorrhea infection can spread to other unlikely parts of the body. For example, a person can get an eye infection after touching infected genitals and then the eyes. Individuals who have had gonorrhea and received treatment may get infected again if they have sexual contact with persons infected with gonorrhea. Who is at risk for gonorrhea?
