What is Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae first discovered in 1879. Neisseria gonorrhoeae grows and multiplies quickly in moist, warm areas of the body such as the cervix, urethra, mouth, or rectum. It can infect the genital tract, the mouth, and the rectum. In women, the opening (cervix) to the womb (uterus) from the birth canal is the first place of infection. The disease however can spread into the womb and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Gonorrhea is the most common reportable infectious disease in the United States. There are an estimated 1. 5 million cases annually in the US. If untreated , gonorrhea can lead to fever, chills, and painful swelling of the genitals and prostate in men. In women, the gonorrhea infection can spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in sterility, ectopic (tubal) pregnancy, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Infected pregnant women will pass the disease on to their newborn babies, with the disease affecting the infant's eyes. In both sexes, extreme untreated infections can enter the bloodstream and affect the joints, heart , and brain How is Gonorrhea Spread?

OVERVIEW
Gonorrhea is a curable sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . These bacteria can infect the genital tract, mouth, and rectum of both men and women. In women, the opening to the uterus, the cervix, is the first place of infection. The disease can spread into the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID affects more than 1 million women in this country every year and can cause tubal (ectopic) pregnancy and infertility in as many as 10 percent of infected women. In 2002, 351,852 cases of gonorrhea were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In the United States, approximately 75 percent of all reported cases of gonorrhea are found in people aged 15 to 29 years. The highest rates of infection are usually found in 15- to 19-year old women and 20- to 24-year-old men.
SYMPTOMS
The bacteria are carried in semen and vaginal fluids and cause a discharge. Symptoms usually appear within 2 to 10 days after sexual contact with an infected partner. For women, the early symptoms of gonorrhea often are mild. A small number of people may be infected for several months without showing symptoms.

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae , a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix (opening to the womb), uterus (womb), and fallopian tubes (egg canals) in women, and in the urethra (urine canal) in women and men. The bacterium can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. Gonorrhea is a very common infectious disease. CDC estimates that more than 700,000 persons in the U.S. get new gonorrheal infections each year. Only about half of these infections are reported to CDC. In 2002, 351,852 cases of gonorrhea were reported to CDC. In the period from 1975 to 1997, the national gonorrhea rate declined, following the implementation of the national gonorrhea control program in the mid-1970s. After a small increase in 1998, the gonorrhea rate has decreased slightly since 1999. In 2002, the rate of reported gonorrheal infections was 125.0 per 100,000 persons. Gonorrhea is spread through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus. Ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to baby during delivery.

The number of reported cases of gonorrhea increased steadily from 1964 to 1977, fluctuated through the early 1980s, increased until 1987, and since 1987 has decreased annually. The incidence of gonorrhea is highest in high-density urban areas among persons under 24 year of age who have multiple sex partners and engage in unprotected sexual intercourse. How do you get gonorrhea?
This STD is spread through contact with an infected vagina, penis, anus, or mouth. It is spread through semen or vaginal fluids during unprotected sexual contact with a partner who has it. Touching infected sex organs, like the vagina or penis, and then touching your eyes can cause an eye infection. It cannot be passed by shaking hands or sitting on a toilet seat. Gonorrhea can also be passed from a pregnant woman to her baby during the birth process through a vaginal delivery. In babies, gonorrhea infection may cause blindness, joint infection, or a life threatening blood infection.
Who is at risk for gonorrhea?
Any sexually active person can be infected with gonorrhea. In the United States, the highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers, young adults, and African Americans.

Gonorrhea increasingly resistant to antibiotics
ATLANTA, Georgia (Reuters) Gonorrhea, the nation's No. 2 sexually transmitted disease, is showing increased resistance to the antibiotics commonly used to treat it, federal health officials said on Thursday. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the drug-resistant strains are making it more difficult to successfully treat gonorrhea. More than 360,000 cases of the disease were reported last year.

What Is It?
Gonorrhea (pronounced: gah-nuh- ree -uh) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by bacteria called Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The bacteria can be passed from one person to another through vaginal, oral, or anal sex, even when the person who is infected has no symptoms. They can also be passed from a mother to her baby during birth. You cannot catch gonorrhea from a towel, a doorknob, or a toilet seat. How Does a Girl Know She Has It?
A girl who has gonorrhea may have no symptoms at all or her symptoms may be so mild that she doesn't notice them until they become more severe. In some cases, girls will feel a burning sensation when they urinate, or they will have a yellow-green vaginal discharge . Girls may also experience vaginal bleeding between menstrual periods If the infection becomes more widespread and moves into the uterus or fallopian tubes, it may cause abdominal pain, fever, and pain during sexual intercourse, as well as the symptoms above. (This widespread infection is called pelvic inflammatory disease or PID.)

Syphilis down, gonorrhea up in U.S., study finds
WASHINGTON (Reuters) Syphilis rates are the lowest they have been since officials started keeping track in the United States, the government said Tuesday, but gonorrhea rates have started a troubling rise. These figures suggest that targeted information campaigns work, and that keeping people in the dark about sexually transmitted diseases gives those illnesses a chance to take hold, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in its report, released at a meeting in Milwaukee.
