A Call To Serve-Missouri and the City of Columbia, with lead sponsorship from the Parkade Center, is conducting the fourth Columbia Cares for Kutaisi campaign. As a culmination of the previous drives, this series of fund-raising events Salt Solution 2005 is geared toward addressing our sister city's long-term needs by opening a repackaging facility that will provide a sustainable source of iodized salt for children and families. As health officials in our country learned decades ago, salt is an ideal food to "carry" iodine for the purpose of supplementing our diets with this important nutrient. Taken every day, iodized salt is a preventive measure, allowing the thyroid to function normally. Without this essential element, the thyroid functions abnormally. Once advanced thyroid disease occurs, supplemental iodine cannot reverse the disease and its effects. Iodine only helps to prevent thyroid disease. For three campaigns stretching over four years the Columbia Cares for Kutaisi committee and ACTS-Missouri team worked diligently to raise money to purchase iodized salt. The hope was that this temporary approach would be replaced by a sustainable solution. Now, in 2005, the committee and the mayors of Kutaisi and Columbia are working with ACTS to reach a long-term Salt Solution.

Goiters are enlarged thyroids, caused in most cases by lack of iodine (and hence we have iodized salt for this purpose). They are more common in areas where diet is lacking, and those people who have goiters in the United States generally have them for other reasons. Your thyroid is that little glandular butterfly in your neck that you're not exactly sure what it is or why it's there. It wasn't even described in scientific literature until in 1656 Thomas Wharton made a distinction between it and the larynx, but for 200 more years its function (regulation of the body's metabolism) was completely unknown. Goiters are excessive enlargements of the thyroid, which may be caused by iodine deficiency, or by an excess of thyroid stimulating hormone. Because we salt everything with iodized salt, iodine deficiency is never a problem in America, but it is elsewhere in the world. Fetish Maximus Rotten Faces of Death

The Basics
Symptoms What Are Goiters?
Goiters can be any one of several types of growths in the thyroid gland, located at the base of front side of the neck. In the case of Graves' disease, the entire thyroid gland becomes enlarged. Another type, called toxic nodular goiter, results when one or more nodules, or adenomas, develop in the thyroid and trigger excess production of thyroid hormone. A goiter may be a temporary problem that will remedy itself over time without medical intervention, or a symptom of another, possibly severe, thyroid condition that requires medical attention. What Causes Them? Goiters can occur when the thyroid gland produces either too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Much more rarely, the problem may arise when the pituitary gland stimulates thyroid growth to boost production of the hormone. Another type of thyroid growth, called a sporadic goiter, can form if your diet includes too many goiter-promoting foods, such as soybeans, rutabagas, cabbage, peaches, peanuts, and spinach. These foods can suppress the manufacture of thyroid hormone by interfering with your thyroid's ability to process iodide. Reviewed by Michael W. Smith

What is Pendred syndrome?
Pendred syndrome is a genetic condition typically associated with hearing loss and goiter, which is an enlargement of the thyroid gland (a butterfly-shaped organ at the base of the neck that produces hormones). Hearing loss is often evident at birth, but in some cases it does not develop until later in infancy or early childhood. Abnormalities of bones in the inner ear are also common in Pendred syndrome. If a goiter develops, it usually forms sometime after the onset of hearing loss, during late childhood, adolescence, or adulthood.

Thyroid Enlargement - Scintiscan
Thyroid Gland When the thyroid gland is unable to make enough thyroid hormone, it may attempt to compensate by enlarging. Enlargement of an otherwise normal thyroid gland is called colloid nodular goiter. A colloid nodular goiter occurs when the thyroid gland is unable to meet the metabolic demands of the body with sufficient hormone production. The thyroid gland compensates by enlarging, which usually overcomes mild deficiencies of thyroid hormone.

Overview Goiter is an enlargement of your thyroid gland. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland weighing less than an ounce, located just below your Adam's apple. Hormones produced by your thyroid gland regulate all aspects of your metabolism, from the rate at which your heart beats to the speed at which you burn calories. Although generally not uncomfortable, goiter can interfere with swallowing or breathing. The possible causes are numerous. Before the early part of the 20th century, the most common cause of goiter was a shortage of iodine in the diet in areas where the soil was deficient in iodine. Without enough dietary iodine, your thyroid can't make and release enough of the two essential iodine-containing hormones.

Graves'Disease Part 1
Hyperthyroidism and Thyrotoxicosis
Thyrotoxicosis are the clinical, physiologic and biochemical syndromes that result when tissues are exposed to, and respond to high levels of thyroid hormone. In most instances, thyrotoxicosis is due to hyperactivity of thyroid gland, or hyperthyroidism (hypermetabolism). Occasionally, thyrotoxicosis may be due to other causes such as excessive ingestion of thyroid hormone or secretion form ectopic sites. There are various forms of thyrotoxicosis and the most common is Graves’ Disease.
Definition
Graves’ disease, also known as Parry’s or Basedow’s disease or diffuse toxic goiter, is a disorder with three major manifestations: hyperthyroidism with diffuse goiter, ophthalmopathy, and dermopathy. They do not appear together. Indeed, one or two need never appear, and moreover, the three may run courses that are largely independent of one another.
Prevalence
It is the most common form of thyrotoxicosis. It affects as many as 1.9 per cent of the female population. The ratio of women to men is as high as 7:1. It reaches its peak incidence between the third and forth decades and the reason for the female predominance in this as in all thyroid diseases is unknown. Genetic factors play an important role, since there is an increased frequency haplotypes HLA-B8 and -DRw3 in Caucasian, HLA-Bw36 in Japanese, and HLA-Bw46 in Chinese patients with the disease.
Etiology and Pathogenesis
Graves’ disease is currently viewed as an autoimmune disease of unknown cause. Hyperthyroidism is its principal manifestation, yet TSH is suppressed and no intrinsic abnormalities in the gland have been identified.

Goiter
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland that is NOT associated with inflammation or cancer
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: There are different kinds of goiters. A simple goiter usually occurs when the thyroid gland is not able to produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body's requirements. The thyroid gland compensates by enlarging, which usually overcomes mild deficiencies of thyroid hormone.
A simple goiter may be classified as either an endemic (colloid) goiter or a sporadic (nontoxic) goiter. Endemic goiters occur within groups of people living in geographical areas with iodine-depleted soil, usually regions away from the sea coast. People in these communities might not get enough iodine in their diet. (Iodine is vital to the formation of thyroid hormone.) The modern use of iodized table salt in the U.S. prevents this deficiency; however, it is still common in central Asia and central Africa. In most cases of sporadic goiter the cause is unknown. Occasionally, certain medications such as lithium or aminoglutethimide can cause a nontoxic goiter.

Toxic nodular goiter
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
Toxic nodular goiter involves an enlarged thyroid gland that contains a small rounded mass or masses called nodules, which produce too much thyroid hormone.
Alternative Names: Toxic adenoma, Toxic multinodular goiter, Plummer's disease
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Toxic nodular goiter arises from a long-standing simple goiter and occurs most often in the elderly. Symptoms are those of hyperthyroidism , but the protruding eyeballs seen in Graves' disease do not occur. Risk factors include being female and over 60 years old. This disorder is never seen in children.
