Glaucoma What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a disease that damages the eyes' optic nerves. Damage does not become noticeable until significant damage has occurred and if not treated could lead to severe vision loss or even blindness. Glaucoma is usually present with high intraocular pressure, pressure in the eyes, and results in a loss of peripheral vision. Early detection through eye exams will greatly help slowing down the disease. Forms of Glaucoma Normal-tension Glaucoma - occurs when there is optic nerve damage and loss of vision even with intraocular pressure within a normal range Angle-closure Glaucoma - Increase in eye intraocular pressure due either to too much fluid being produced in the eye or to fluid not being able to exit the eye due to a blockage of the meshwork inside the eye. This can cause pain, headaches, nausea, red eyes, blurred eyes and vision loss. According to the NEI, "This is a medical emergency. If your doctor is unavailable, go to the nearest hospital or clinic. Without treatment to improve the flow of fluid, the eye can become blind in as few as one or two days." At the front of the eye, there is a small space called the anterior chamber. Clear fluid flows in and out of the chamber to bathe and nourish nearby tissues. In glaucoma, for still unknown reasons, the fluid drains too slowly out of the eye. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises. Unless this pressure is controlled, it may cause damage to the optic nerve and other parts of the eye and loss of vision. 3 Who is most likely to get it? Nearly 3 million people have glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness in the United States. Although anyone can get glaucoma, some people are at higher risk. They include: Blacks over the age of 40. Anyone over the age of 60. People with a family history of glaucoma. Among Blacks, studies show that glaucoma is: Five times more likely to occur in Blacks than in Whites. About four times more likely to cause blindness in Blacks than in Whites. Fifteen times more likely to cause blindness in Blacks between the ages of 45- 64 than in Whites of the same age group.

Fatigue may be a factor in regulating assignments. IMPLICATIONS: There is some evidence to suggest that stress tends to exacerbate glaucoma; therefore, emotional upset should be avoided. Excessive fatigue should also be avoided. Optical aids and illumination control (e.g., sunglasses) are recommended as needed, since photophobia and decreased visual acuity are symptoms of glaucoma. A unique characteristic of this disorder is the observation by the patient of halos around lights. Early identification and ongoing control are essential if visual function is to be maintained. Genetic counseling may be indicated.

Glaucoma is classified as either primary or secondary in animals. Primary Glaucoma is an inherited condition. Primary glaucoma occurs in many breeds, especially American Cocker Spaniels, Basset Hounds, Chow Chows, Shar Peis, Labrador Retrievers, and Arctic Circle breed dogs (Huskies, Elkhounds, etc). It is rare in cats. Primary Glaucoma usually begins in one eye, but almost always eventually involves both eyes, leading to complete blindness.
