Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the name for a group of eye diseases in which the optic nerve is damaged. In the worst cases, the damage can lead to blindness, but this need not happen if glaucoma is detected and treated early. The most common type, called open angle glaucoma (or chronic simple glaucoma), affects around two in every hundred people over the age of 40, and becomes more common with increasing age.
The normal eye
The eyeball is filled with a watery fluid called aqueous humour, which creates pressure and helps maintain the shape of the eyeball (see the diagram, below). The aqueous humour that fills the anterior chamber (front part of the eye) is produced by the ciliary body, just behind the iris. The fluid drains back into the bloodstream through sieve-like channels called the trabecular meshwork. Normally, the amount of fluid produced is balanced by the amount draining away, so the pressure in the eye stays constant.
Cross section of the eye
Increased pressure
In most people with glaucoma, it is raised pressure inside the eye that causes optic nerve damage. The increase in pressure usually happens because the aqueous humour in the anterior chamber doesn’t drain away properly.

Please feel free to visit our Home Page or check out other eye conditions on our Eye Conditions page What Is Glaucoma? Home Page Glaucoma is the diagnosis given to a group of ocular conditions that contribute to the loss of retinal nerve fibers with a corresponding loss of vision. Glaucoma therefore is a disease of the optic nerve, the nerve bundle which carries images from the eyes retina to the brain. The eyeball is basically a rigid sphere filled with fluid. As the total amount of fluid within the eye increases, so does the pressure, similar to over inflating a tire. Many people know that glaucoma has something to do with increased pressure inside the eye. The higher the pressure inside the eye, the greater the chance of damage to the optic nerve. Glaucoma is said to be one of the leading causes of blindness in people over the age of 40. It affects approximately 2% of that population. Loss of peripheral (vision off to the side) is the earliest symptom. Left untreated the field of vision will continue to narrow leading to tunnel vision. If detected early, loss of vision can most often be prevented. This is the destiny many glaucoma patients face. Researchers hope to brighten their future by gaining a clearer understanding of how the disease destroys the system that transmits visual information to the brain. New studies on genes are providing some answers and are allowing researchers to investigate ways to improve diagnosis and treatment. Apparently what's-his-face from the movie Titanic trotted past you in the subway. And you missed him. How?
Several months later your doctor informs you that the eye ailment, glaucoma, was to blame.
The sight-stealing disease, which affects some three million Americans, often offers no obvious warning signs. There's no pain. Vision seems normal. As the disease progresses, side vision slowly fades. Many ignore the clue and suspect they just need new glasses. A delayed doctor's visit reveals that the damage already is irreversible.
But now new research is sure to buoy your spirits. An increasing number of studies show that abnormal and healthy genes - an inherited code that guides the production of proteins - are associated with the development of some forms of glaucoma. The discoveries are leading to:

Glaucoma
  • What Is It? Symptoms Diagnosis Expected Duration ... Additional Info
  • What Is It? Glaucoma is a common eye condition in which vision is lost because of damage to the optic nerve. The optic nerve carries information about vision from the eye to the brain. In most cases, the optic nerve is damaged when the pressure of the fluid circulating inside the front part of the eye rises. However, glaucoma-related eye damage can occur even when the fluid pressure is normal.

    WHAT IS GLAUCOMA?

    HELPFUL TIPS

GLAUCOMA THE SNEAK THIEF OF SIGHT Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States. It is THE leading cause of blindness among African-Americans, and the leading cause of PREVENTABLE blindness in the U.S. Glaucoma may occur at any age but happens with increasing frequency during advancing years. Approximately 2% of the population over the age of 40 is affected. It's estimated that over 2 million Americans have glaucoma, and more than half of them are not aware they have the disease. THE EYE'S ANATOMY: HOW THE EYE WORKS Your eye is like a camera. Light enters the clear dome in the front of the eye (cornea), passes through the focusing part (lens), and comes to rest on the "film" or recording part (retina). The nerve attached to the eye carries these recorded pictures "back to the brain" and WE SEE. Eyes must stay inflated and round, just like a basketball. To stay inflated, the eye constantly makes fluid (aqueous humor) which circulates inside the front of the eye (anterior chamber), and leaves the eye by an intricate drain (trabecular meshwork). The balance between how much fluid is made and how much fluid leaves the eye determines how inflated the eye is (intraocular pressure). If all is working well, the fluid made inside the eye equals the amount of fluid leaving the eye, and the intraocular pressure is normal. If fluid cannot leave the eye properly, it builds up inside and the eye's pressure rises. This is the basic fact of glaucoma: high pressure inside the eye damages the eye's delicate optic nerve.

    Glaucoma
    Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
A condition of increased fluid pressure inside the eye ( intraocular pressure ). This increased pressure damages the optic nerve causing partial vision loss , with blindness as a possible, eventual outcome.
Alternative Names: Secondary glaucoma; Open angle glaucoma; Chronic glaucoma; Closed angle glaucoma; Congenital glaucoma; Acute glaucoma
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Glaucoma is the third most common cause of blindness in the United States. There are four major types of glaucoma:
    • Open angle or chronic glaucoma Closed angle or acute glaucoma Congenital glaucoma Secondary glaucoma
All four types are characterized by increased pressure within the eyeball, and therefore all of them can cause progressive damage to the optic nerve. Increased pressure occurs when the fluid within the eye (called aqueous humor), which is produced continuously, does not drain properly. The pressure pushes on the junction of the optic nerve and the retina at the back of the eye. This reduces the blood supply to the optic nerve, which carries vision from the eye to the brain. This loss of blood supply causes the individual nerve cells to progressively die. As the optic nerve deteriorates, blind spots develop in the field of vision.
