Gerstmann Syndrome Support Network provides the following services:
  • Education about the disorder to professionals
  • Pen-pal service to those with Gerstmann Syndrome
  • Advocacy service to those with Gerstmann Syndrome (on a limited basis)
  • Phone support for professionals and those with Gerstmann Syndrome
  • Information and referrals to other groups that might be of additional help
  • Bereavement and grief support for those with Gerstmann Syndrome only
Gerstmann Syndrome Support Network has a Board of Directors. The requirements for board membership are that you must have Gerstmann Syndrome and be willing to share your ideas through letters to program questioners. Contact the Network for more information.

Gerstmann's syndrome Also known as: Gerstmann syndrome II Syndrome de Gerstmann (French) Gerstmann-Badal syndrome Synonyms: Angularis syndrome, gyrus angularis syndrome, angular gyrus syndrome, angular gyrus (left) syndrome, dyscalculia and right-left disorientation, bilateral asomatognosia syndrome, right-left apraxia. Associated persons: Jules Badal Josef Gerstmann Description: Disease of the association area of the dominant parietal lobe of the brain with characteristic clinical picture. Symptoms are finger agnosia (lacking or impaired ability to describe the fingers), agraphia (lacking or impaired ability to write), right-left disorientation, dysphragia; dyscalculia/acalculia (lack of ability to calculate). The patient has difficulty in recognizing, naming, selecting, and differentiating the fingers of either of his hands or those of others. In addition, there is inability to recognize the sides of his body, to write words or sentences, and to perform even simple calculations. Orientation for place and person is not affected, but time orientation may be somewhat disturbed. The general psychic condition of the patient is good. It is debated whether this is really an independent syndromic entity.

Gerstmann syndrome is a rare neurological disorder that can occur as the result of a brain injury or as a developmental disorder. The syndrome is characterized by the loss or absence four sensory abilities. The disorder has not been found to run in families. Children who are bright and functioning intellectually at a high level may be affected by the disorder as well as those with brain damage.

Gerstmann syndrome
Developmental Gerstmann Syndrome, Gerstmann Tetrad Gerstmann was a Viennese neurologist who described the eponymous syndrome in 1924.
  • It consists of 4 components:
  • Agraphia or dysgraphia
  • Acalculia or dyscalculia
  • Finger agnosia
  • Left-right disorientation
Epidemiology
Incidence
It can occur in 2 basic forms. One is as a congenital or learning disorder. The other is as a feature of a stroke of the middle cerebral artery. Both forms are rare, but especially the childhood form. It can also be a feature of other neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease or as a result of head injury. The childhood type may occur in those with other brain damage or in isolation with otherwise good mental function. It does not seem to have a genetic component. It has been argued that developmental Gerstmann’s syndrome it is not a unique entity but a feature of other neurodevelopmental disorders . This has been disputed Risk Factors The affected area is the parietal lobe on the dominant side.
