Human Papilloma Virus
What is it?
Human papilloma virus (HPV) is spread via sexual activity. Nearly 40 million people in the United States are infected with HPV. HPV can cause three different types of diseases, mostly in or around the genital area: Warts
Dysplasia
: Abnormal patches of cells found inside the anus or within the cervix (located at the lower end of the uterus, or womb). Unlike warts, dysplasia can't be felt or easily seen. Dysplasia is often referred to as a "pre-cancer" form of disease. Not all men or women with dysplasia go on to develop cancer.
Cancer (carcinoma): Dysplasia can develop into cancer. The four most common types of cancer caused by HPV are cervical cancer, anal cancer, rectal cancer, and penile cancer. If not diagnosed and treated early, these forms of cancer can be life-threatening. HIV-positive people are more likely to be infected with HPV than HIV-negative people. HIV+ people are also more likely to develop genital warts, as well as cervical or anal cancer, as a result of HPV. Researchers don't yet know if anti-HIV drugs will help reduce the number of new cases of genital warts or anal or cervical cancers. In fact, some researchers speculate that, because anti-HIV drugs have been successful in keeping HIV-positive people alive longer, the risk of developing genital warts or cancer might increase. What are the symptoms of HPV?

Smoking linked to genital wart duration
MONTREAL, Jul 13 (Reuters) Genital warts are more likely to linger for 6 months or more in men who are smokers compared with nonsmokers, according to a report presented here at the First International Conference on Human Papillomavirus Infections and Cervical Cancer. In a study of 231 men being treated at the Perth STD Wart Clinic in Australia, men with visible warts were younger and nearly three times more likely to be current smokers than men without warts, reported Dr. Jenny McCloskey and colleagues at the clinic. Regardless of the patient's age or alcohol use, patients who had warts that lingered for 6 months or longer were twice as likely to be smokers. Men who had warts for 31 months or longer were more than six times more likely to be smokers than nonsmokers. All of the men had histories of treatment difficulties or difficult to diagnose genital warts. The study also found that 18% of men became sexually abstinent after acquiring a wart, and the abstinent period usually lasted for 10 months. For men whose warts had been present for 12 months or more, the average number of partners decreased from 7.9 during the year before diagnosis to 2.0 for the year after diagnosis. Condom use increased among men with warts from 29% prior to diagnosis to 73% after diagnosis. The findings are "biologically plausible," McCloskey noted. Previous studied showed that in women, precancerous lesions of the cervix caused by the human papilloma virus the virus that causes genital warts can sometimes shrink if a woman quits smoking.

One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the U.S., with over 3 million new cases a year. Symptoms
Flat, smooth, bumpy, or round warts on the genital region (either internal or external) which can be invisible to the naked eye. If left untreated, can spread and develop a cauliflower-like appearance. Fifty percent of those infected never develop warts, but may still be infectious to others. Incubation
Symptoms are likely to appear one to three months after exposure. Diagnosis
Colposcopy. The doctor will swab the skin with a diluted vinegar solution then examine the area with a magnifying lens and powerful light source. Warts will appear as white spots. Complications
Has been associated with precancerous and cancerous cell changes on the cervix and, less commonly, other genital areas. If left untreated, can block the opening to the urethra, vagina or anus, causing great discomfort.

What are Condyloma?
Condylomata Acuminata or Genital Warts are fleshy growths which appear in the genital area. They are caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and are usually spread by sexual contact. Symptoms and Diagnosis
Genital warts first appear as small pink or red bumps on the vulva (lips of the vagina), vagina, cervix, penis shaft, urinary opening or rectum. They are usually painless, but some people may have itching, burning or slight bleeding from these areas. The time between exposure to the virus and the appearance of warts is not known. It could be anywhere from several weeks to several years before symptoms occur. Because of this, it is had to tell when and where you were exposed to the virus. Sometimes vaginal infections and pregnancy can cause warts to grow and spread. One study showed that 20% of women with genital warts also had a vaginal infection. Unless that infection is treated, the warts may not go away. Warts may spread up inside the vagina and on the cervix. They may also cause abnormal Pap smears. During pregnancy warts may be treated so they do not spread or grow larger. In men, warts may spread inside the penis causing problems when they urinate. The diagnosis of condylomata acuminata is usually made by a health care provider simply inspecting the genital area. Occasionally, they may want to remove a wart and send it to the lab for further tests. Because genital warts are a sexually transmitted disease other tests may be done for other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, Chlamydia, syphilis, HIV and hepatitis.

Genital Warts
What are Genital Warts? Genital warts arise in clusters and can be quite small in size. Often these warts will disappear without any treatment. However, it's quite common for these small protrusions to develop into a raised growth with a cauliflower-like surface. It's virtually impossible to tell which will occur. Therefore, any person suspecting that s/he has developed a case of genital warts should immediately consult their health care provider. What are the symptoms of Genital Warts? Genital warts are relatively easy to detect; they are small lumps which appear on the genital area. The vulva and the perineum (area between the vaginal opening and the anus) are the areas most affected in women. They also appear on the vagina, cervix and anus. In men, the warts most often appear on the glans, foreskin and urethral opening. They may also appear on the shaft of the penis, scrotum and anus. (Note: sometimes men have shiny spots called "pearly papules" on the glans which are normal and should not be confused with warts.) Many people may have the virus that causes genital warts but show no symptoms. How are Genital Warts contracted?

What are venereal warts?
Venereal warts, also called condyloma, are a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that affects the skin or mucous membranes. The virus may cause cauliflower-like fleshy growths in moist areas in and around the sex organs. In many cases, warts are not visible to the naked eye.
Who gets venereal warts?
Any sexually active person can be infected with venereal warts. Most often, venereal warts are found in young (age 15 to 30 years) people who have multiple sex partners. Those whose immune systems are compromised are more likely to become infected and to have a more serious infection than others.
