More than 70 types of HPV have been identified; types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 35 are transmitted sexually and cause anogenital warts Anogenital warts caused by types 6 and 11 typically appear externally, on the penis, vulva, or anus. Types 16 and 18 cause warts on the mucous membranes (epithelium) that line the vagina, cervix, rectum, or urethra and are associated with cervical and rectal cancer. Infection is serious, although most cases do not lead to cancer.

Genital warts (sometimes called condyloma), are usually caused by a sexually transmitted viral infection that is common among men and women in the United States today. Warts in the genital area are easily passed from person to person. In fact, practitioners who examine the sexual partners of people with genital warts find that between two-thirds and four-fifths of the partners have warts. It is not suprising, then, that genital warts are now one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. Although this infection is on the rise, much can be done to treat as well as prevent genital warts. What causes Genital Warts? Genital warts are caused by a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV). This wart virus may be transmitted during vaginal sexual intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex. These viruses can infect any sexually active person. However, people with more than one sexual partner or people who have had other sexually transmitted diseases are at greater risk for this infection. How can I find out if I have Genital Warts?

Genital warts are a sign of infection with particular strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) What is it? HPV is a virus that is very prevalent virus in the United States, but not all cases of HPV pose a sexual threat. More than 100 types of HPV have been identified, only 30 of which are spread via sexual contact. An HPV infection can be one of the following types:
    • A harmless strain of HPV. A type of HPV that causes warts on other parts of the body, such as the hands and feet, but not on the genital area. Sexually transmissible HPV that does not cause warts, which has been linked with serious health problems for both men and women, including increased risk of genital cancers. Sexually transmissible HPV that causes warts, which can be an inconvenience, but are not usually connected to serious risks like cancer.

Genital Warts What are they? Bumpy, warty growths called by a virus, the human papilloma virus (HPV). They are transmitted by sexual contact with an individual who has them. What are the symptoms? Painless. Sometimes, the warts can be flat and flesh-colored. In men, one may not be able to see the warts, if they are located on the underside of the penis. In women, HPV infection has been associated with cervical cancer. How do I find out if I have this infection? For men, the warts are identified by a physical exam. In women, the warts can be identified internally during the yearly GYN exam. The PAP smear identifies any early changes in cells that may be early cancer. What is the treatment? Certain dyes and acid paints can be applied to dry the wart up and make it fall off. How do I prevent this infection?

    What are they?
Genital warts are caused by infection with a virus called the human papilloma virus. This is different from the strain that causes warts on the fingers and hands. It's a sexually transmitted infection spread through intimate contact. This doesn't need to be penetrative sex; close genital contact is enough.
    Symptoms
Genital warts may feel like gritty, hard bumps on the skin of the genitals or around the anus before they are seen. Usually more than one genital wart is present. When visible, they may appear as flat, smooth, small bumps, or quite large, pink, cauliflower-like lumps. They may itch, but are usually painless.

    • vaginal or anal sex close body contact sharing sex toys
Condoms can't offer full protection against genital warts, as the virus is passed on through direct skin-to-skin contact, and condoms only cover the penis.

I am a virgin, but have had unprotected oral sex with two people. Need to know Dear Need to know, Genital warts look like the warts that might develop on any other part of the body. They're dry, painless growths, rough in texture, and gray or pink in color. They can be flat or raised, and they vary in size. Untreated warts can grow together to form a cauliflower-like mass. The incubation time (time from exposure to appearance of growths) may range from a few weeks to many months or years. People can be infected with the virus that causes the warts and be capable of transmitting that virus without having any symptoms at all. If you think that you might have genital warts, make an appointment at Primary Care Medical Services by calling x4-2284 if you're at Columbia, or with your private health care provider if you're not. And any time you give or receive sexual pleasure in the future, use a condom to cover the penis or labia (in case your lover is asymptomatic).

Mac users: please note that our site is optimized for the Safari browser Herpes Testing for herpes and genital warts Originally Published: May 23, 1997 / Updated on: August 24, 2001 Alice, I have recently gone to a Planned Parenthood STD Clinic. From what they told me, they tested for everything "curable" (i.e., they did not test for HIV, genital warts, or herpes). I know where to get tested for HIV, but my question is: are there tests for herpes and genital warts? What are the odds of someone having herpes or genital warts and being asymptomatic? I plan to use a condom during intercourse regardless, but must I do the same for oral sex as well? Is there any way of knowing for sure if someone is clean of STDs? Signed, Confused Dear Confused, Just as falling in love takes some courage and trust, so does choosing to be sexual with someone. There is always a risk of "catching something." What people can do is minimize the risk by using condoms, dams, and lube each and every time they have oral, vaginal, or anal sex. ASHA Herpes Resource Center web site . No bloods tests for HPV are available at this time. Herpes can be transmitted when sores are present, or during times of viral shedding, when there are no visible lesions, but the virus is active on the surface of the skin. Although herpes can be transmitted during times of viral shedding, a person is infectious from viral shedding probably for a few days out of the year. The most likely time for herpes to be transmitted is when sores are present. Again, herpes can affect people differently. Some people experience painful episodes of herpes that drive them to seek medical attention, while others have such mild symptoms that they do not notice, or do not consider them a health concern.

    Warts - Genital
Genital warts are growths of bumps that may be raised or flat, single or multiple, small or large. They range from pink to dark brown in color. Some cluster together forming a cauliflower-like shape. The human papilloma virus (HPV) causes all types of warts. HPV is a group of viruses that includes more than 70 different types. Certain types of HPV cause the common warts on the hands or feet, while others can cause visible genital (or venereal) warts.
Sometimes HPV causes very subtle changes on the skin that can't be seen with the naked eye. Many if not most, of the people infected by HPV have no visible warts, so many people with genital HPV do not know they have it. Health care providers can find these "microscopic warts" only with the help of special instruments. In other cases, HPV can live in the skin without causing any warts at all. This is called 'clinically inapparent' or 'subclinical' HPV infection.
HPV infection, including genital warts, occurs commonly in sexually active men and women of all ages, races, and sexual orientations. Infants can be infected by their mothers during birth, but this is rare.
HPV and genital warts are usually spread by direct, skin-to-skin contact during vaginal, anal, or oral sex with someone who has this infection. Different types of HPV cause warts on other parts of the body, such as the hands. Contact with these warts does not cause typical genital warts.

    Genital warts
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: A viral skin disease characterized by a soft wart-like growth on the genitals. In adults, the disorder is considered a sexually-transmitted disease.
Alternative Names: Condylomata acuminata; Penile warts; Human papilloma virus (HPV); Venereal wart; Condyloma
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Genital warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Papilloma viruses cause small growths ( warts ) on the skin and mucous membranes. Infection of the genital and anal regions with HPV can cause warts (anogenital condyloma) on the penis vulva , urethra, vagina cervix , and around the anus (perianal).
More than 70 different types of HPV have been classified. Several types, including 6, 11, and 42, are associated with raised, rough, easily visible genital warts (especially in women). Other types are associated with flat warts. More importantly, several types are associated with pre-malignant and malignant changes in the cervix (abnormal Pap smears). These include types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, and 52. Research also shows that the presence of both HPV and herpes virus together is a good predictor of cervical cancer
Lesions on the external genitalia are easily recognized. On the penis, genital warts tend to be drier and more limited than on the female genitalia or around the anus of either sex.
