Human Papillomavirus and Genital Warts
WHAT IS HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS?
There are high-risk and low-risk types of HPV. High-risk HPV may cause abnormal Pap smear results, and could lead to cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, anus, or penis. Low-risk HPV also may cause abnormal Pap results or genital warts. Health experts estimate there are more cases of genital HPV infection than any other STI in the United States. According to the American Social Health Association, approximately 5.5 million new cases of sexually transmitted HPV infections are reported every year. At least 20 million people in this country are already infected. WHAT ARE GENITAL WARTS? Genital warts (sometimes called condylomata acuminata or venereal warts) are the most easily recognized sign of genital HPV infection. Many people, however, have a genital HPV infection without genital warts. Genital warts are soft, moist, or flesh colored and appear in the genital area within weeks or months after infection. They sometimes appear in clusters that resemble cauliflower-like bumps, and are either raised or flat, small or large. Genital warts can show up in women on the vulva and cervix, and inside and surrounding the vagina and anus. In men, genital warts can appear on the scrotum or penis. There are cases where genital warts have been found on the thigh and groin.

Genital Warts
Genital Warts (or condyloma) is a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus may cause wart-like bumps to form on the penis, in and around the vagina, on the cervix (opening to the womb), around the anus (butt), and rarely on the mouth. The virus is passed between people during anal, vaginal, and sometimes oral sex. These are NOT the same warts commonly found on hands and feet. See the Web pages for SF City Clinic
and additional information about genital warts How are genital warts spread?
  • Many people carry the wart virus on their penis, in and around the vagina, or in and around the anus/rectum. Only a small number of these people develop warts that can be seen. It is passed with skin to skin contact during anal or vaginal sex. The wart virus is very common in adults who are sexually active.
How do I know if I have warts?
  • Not everyone with the genital wart virus will have signs of disease. You may have painless wart-like growths on or in your sex organs or around your anus (butt). The warts may vary in size and be bumpy or flat. Sometimes special tests are needed to detect the wart virus.

Genital warts, also called condylomata acuminata or venereal warts are the most easily recognized sign of genital human papilloma virus (PHV) infection. Warts are benign tumors of the epidermis. Some people will have a genital HPV infection without genital warts. What causes Genital Warts? Genital Warts are caused by certain types of HPV. Can HPV cause other kinds of warts? Yes. Some types of HPV cause common skin warts, such as those found on the hands and soles of the feet . These types of HPV do not cause genital warts. Where EXACTLY are Genital Warts? In women, the warts occur on the outside and inside of the vagina, on the opening (cervix) to the womb (uterus), or around the anus. In men, genital warts are less common. If present, they usually are seen on the tip of the penis. They also may be found on the shaft of the penis, on the scrotum, or around the anus. Genital warts can also develop in the mouth of a person who has had oral sexual contact with an infected person. Genital warts often occur in clusters and can be very tiny or can spread into large masses in the genital or anal area.

Genital Warts Overview
Genital warts are flesh-colored or gray growths found in the genital area and anal region in both men and women. It is the most common sexually transmitted disease caused by a virus. The warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Infection with genital warts may not be obvious. Although no cure exists for genital warts, various treatments are available. It is important to treat genital warts because they have the potential to cause cervical cancer in women. Genital warts affect both men and women and can occur at any age.
  • Most patients are seen between the ages of 17-33 years. Genital warts are highly contagious. You have a 60% risk of getting the infection in a single sexual contact with someone who has genital warts. In children younger than 3 years, genital warts are thought to be transmitted by nonsexual modes such as direct manual contact. The presence of genital warts in children should raise the suspicion for sexual abuse.

HERPES FAQ
What is Genital Herpes?
Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2). Most genital herpes is caused by HSV-2. Most individuals have no or only minimal signs or symptoms from HSV-1 or HSV-2 infection. When signs do occur, they typically appear as one or more blisters on or around the genitals or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender ulcers (sores) that may take two to four weeks to heal the first time they occur. Typically, another outbreak can appear weeks or months after the first, but it almost always is less severe and shorter than the first outbreak. Although the infection can stay in the body indefinitely, the number of outbreaks tends to decrease over a period of years. How common is Genit l Herpes?

13. Pelvic Exam And Pap Smear
Information from the San Francisco Department of Public Health about the procedure and results and their relation to genital warts.
http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/HealthInfo/std_pelvic.htm

The Pelvic Exam and Pap Smear
See the Web pages for SF City Clinic The pelvic examination is a "check-up" of your vagina (inside and outside), cervix (opening of the uterus) and uterus (womb). Your clinician will look inside the vagina with a speculum (plastic instrument that lets the clinician see inside the vagina), and may also take tests at that time such as a "pap smear" and tests for gonorrhea and chlamydia What happens during the pelvic exam?
  • During the pelvic exam, drops of discharge from the vagina may be looked at under the microscope to check for yeast Trichomonas bacterial vaginosis and irritation or infection of the cervix. A check for genital warts herpes , or a syphilis sore is done by looking carefully at the outside and inside of the vagina. The second part of a pelvic examination is when the doctor puts two fingers inside the vagina and checks the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries for normal development, infection (such as PID ), tubal pregnancy or ovarian cysts. This pelvic examination is not painful.

    What are genital warts?
Genital warts may be small, flat, flesh-colored bumps or tiny, cauliflower-like bumps. In men, genital warts can grow on the penis, near the anus, or between the penis and the scrotum. In women, genital warts may grow on the vulva and perineal area, in the vagina and on the cervix. Genital warts vary in size and may even be so small that you can't see them. They can lead to cancer of the cervix in women or cancer of the penis in men. Genital warts are caused by the Human papillomavirus (HPV). There are many kinds of HPV. Not all of them cause genital warts. Return to top
    How do you get HPV?
HPV is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). The most common way to get HPV is by having oral, vaginal or anal sex with someone who has HPV. The only sure way to prevent genital warts is to not have sex. If you are sexually active, having sex only with a partner who doesn't have HPV and only has sex with you will lower your risk of getting genital warts. Just because you can't see warts on your partner doesn't mean he or she doesn't have HPV. The infection can have a long incubation period. This means that months can pass between the time a person is infected with the virus and the time a person notices genital warts. Sometimes, the warts can take years to develop. In women, the warts may be where you can't see theminside the body, on the surface of the cervix.

    What causes warts?
Warts are a type of infection caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. There are at least 60 types of HPV viruses. Warts can grow on all parts of your body. They can grow on your skin, on the inside of your mouth, on your genitals and on your rectal area. Some types of HPV tend to cause warts on the skin, while other HPV types tend to cause warts on the genitals and rectal area. Some people are more naturally resistant to the HPV viruses and don't seem to get warts as easily as other people. Return to top
Can warts be passed from one person to another person?
Yes. Warts on the skin may be passed to another person when that person touches the warts. It is also possible to get warts from using towels or other objects that were used by a person who has warts. Warts on the genitals can be passed to another person during sexual intercourse. It is important not to have unprotected sex if you or your partner has warts on the genital area. In women, warts can grow on the cervix (inside the vagina), and a woman may not know she has them. She may pass the infection to her sexual partner without even knowing it.
