Treatment of Gastric Cancer at Mayo Clinic in Rochester
(Synonyms: stomach cancer) Gastric cancer patients who come to Mayo Clinic for treatment receive comprehensive diagnosis and compassionate care. An experienced team of doctors and health-care professionals provides patients and their families with detailed answers to questions, educational materials, follow-up recommendations and genetic testing. The multidisciplinary team typically includes gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and geneticists. Gastric cancer can develop in any part of the stomach. About 21,500 new cases of gastric cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. Experts recognize gastric cancer as the 10th leading cause of cancer death in the United States and consider about one-half of 1 percent of the population to be at risk for developing the disease. In the early and most curable stages of gastric cancer, patients usually lack symptoms.
Treatment Options
Common treatments for gastric cancer include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Physicians recommend these treatments alone or in combination depending on a patient's general health and the stage of the cancer. Patients with advanced disease can often participate in clinical trials that offer experimental therapies. The team works with each patient to develop an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan.

Gastric cancer, the major cause of cancer death in Asia, Central America, and South America, has been the leading cause of death from a gastrointestinal malignancy at the Dade County and Sylvester/Jackson Memorial Hospital in southern Florida. The problems of gastric cancer in our Center, its effect on an otherwise vigorous middle-aged population (with a median age of 55 years), and aggressive endoscopic and surgical policy provided the impetus for our clinical and translational research efforts.
Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Gastric Cancer
Postoperative gastric cancer adjuvant strategies have not yet been decisively successful in improving overall survival. Moreover, the advanced stage of presentation for most unscreened gastric cancer patients allows postoperative adjuvant treatment to be directed to no more than 50% of patients. A prospective, randomized, preoperative chemo-therapy trial from Korea presented to the American Society of Clinical Oncology in May 1996. Despite statistically significant downstaging and significant increase in curative resections for patients who received chemotherapy, overall survival showed only a trend to improvement for chemotherapy (

Introduction
It is tempting to speculate that Hamlet recognized the infectious etiology of peptic ulcer disease, thus presaging recent developments in modern medicine. As old microbes are resurging and new pathogens are emerging, the study of infectious causes of disease is again in the forefront of medicine. Helicobacter pylori , the elusive, acidtolerant bacteria first associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, nonulcer dyspepsia and, finally, gastric cancer, serve as a paradigm for the evolution of infectious disease in modern medicine. Until recently, the pathogenesis of ulcer disease was attributed to overproduction of acid and mucosal barrier destruction as a result of stress, smoking, or dietary factors. The dogma that environmental and genetic factors predisposed individuals to the development of gastric cancer was universally accepted, and H pylori was considered to be a possible cause of gastritis.[1] Now, a few years later

Green tea and risk of gastric cancer
Some, but not all studies have found a reduced risk of gastric cancer in association with green tea consumption. This study examines whether green tea protects against gastric cancer among a large number of the Japanese population.
Message
Green tea consumption is not associated with the risk of gastric cancer in Japanese men and women.

Study
Participants were 26,311 Japanese (11,902 men and 14,409 women), aged at least 40 years, residents of three municipalities from a region in northern Japan (chosen for its high incidence of gastric cancer). In 1984 participants completed questionnaires, which were delivered to and collected from their homes, on their health habits (e.g. diet, alcohol consumption, smoking), frequency of green tea consumption and family history of disease. They were followed for nine years. Green tea consumption was divided into four categories: less than one cup a day; one or two cups a day; three or four cups a day; and five or more cups a day. In the region studied, a typical cup contains 100 ml of tea.

Gastric cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in the world. The United States is fortunate in that the incidence of this dreadful disease is lower than many other countries. Nevertheless, the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute reports that over 19,000 people in the United States were diagnosed with gastric cancer and over 1,100 died of the disease in 1994.*
