What is cancer of the stomach?
Cancer of the stomach, also called gastric cancer, is a disease in which cancer (malignant) cells are found in the tissues of the stomach. The stomach is a J-shaped organ in the upper abdomen where the food is broken down (digested). Food reaches the stomach through a tube called the esophagus that connects the mouth to the stomach. After leaving the stomach, partially digested food passes into the small intestine and then into the large intestine called the colon. Sometimes cancer can be in the stomach for a long time and can grow very large before it causes symptoms. In the early stages of cancer of the stomach, a patient may have:
      • Indigestion and stomach discomfort A bloated feeling after eating Mild nausea Loss of appetite Heartburn
In more advanced stages of cancer of the stomach, the patient may have:

Gastric cancer
Definition: Gastric cancers are malignancies of the stomach.
Alternative Names: Cancer - stomach; Stomach cancer; Gastric carcinoma
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Several different types of cancer can occur in the stomach. The most common type is called adenocarcinoma, which refers to the way the cancer looks under the microscope. There are several types of adenocarcinoma. Because other types of gastric cancer occur much less frequently, this article focuses on adenocarcinoma. Adenocarcinoma of the stomach is a common cancer of the digestive tract worldwide, although it is relatively uncommon in the US. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years old. The incidence of this form of gastric cancer is extremely high in Japan, Chile, and Iceland. The incidence of most types of gastric adenocarcinoma in the US has declined over the years. Experts think the decrease may be related to reduced intake of salted, cured, and smoked foods, and increased vitamin C consumption.

Stomach cancer also known as gastric cancer, is a disease in which malignant cancer cells are found in the tissues of the stomach. It occurs most frequently in men over 40 years of age. Approximately 12,000 people in the U.K. are diagnosed with this disease each year. Stomach cancer arises from changes in the internal lining of the stomach, the part that is responsible for secreting the acid, fluid and other chemicals. This layer is complicated because as well as having to secrete, it must also protect itself from the acid that it produces, otherwise it would damage the stomach lining and cause an ulcer. What causes stomach cancer? The exact cause of stomach cancer is unknown. However, there are many risk factors thought to play a part in the cells becoming cancerous. These are as follows:
  • Infection with Helicobacter Pylori (H.pylori) a germ that causes inflammation in the stomach. It is the main cause of peptic ulcers but is also believed to play an important part in causing stomach cancer (

When a person swallows, the muscular wall of the esophagus contracts to help push food down to the stomach. There are two main types of cancer that can occur in the esophagus. Squamous cell carcinoma occurs more commonly in the upper or middle part of the esophagus. Adenocarcinoma occurs in the lower part of the esophagus. 2. Who gets esophageal cancer?

In more advanced stages of cancer of the stomach, the patient may have blood in the stool, vomiting, weight loss, or pain in the stomach. The chance of getting stomach cancer is higher if the patient has had an infection of the stomach caused by Helicobacter pylori, or if the patient is older, is a man, smokes cigarettes, or frequently eats a diet that includes lots of dry, salted foods. Other factors that increase the chances of getting stomach cancer are a stomach disorder called atrophic gastritis or Menetrier's disease, a disorder of the blood called pernicious anemia, or a hereditary condition of growths (called polyps) in the large intestine.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note: Separate PDQ summaries on Prevention of Gastric Cancer and Screening for Gastric Cancer are also available. Cancer of the distal half of the stomach has been decreasing in the United States since the 1930s. However, in the last 2 decades, the incidence of cancer of the cardia and gastroesophageal junction has been rapidly rising. The incidence of this cancer has increased dramatically, especially in patients under 40 years of age. In localized distal gastric cancer, more than 50% of the patients can be cured. However, early stage disease accounts for only 10% to 20% of all cases diagnosed in the United States. The remaining patients present with metastatic disease in either regional or distant sites. The overall survival rate in these patients at 5 years ranges from almost no survival for patients with disseminated disease to almost 50% survival for patients with localized distal gastric cancers confined to resectable regional disease. Even with apparent localized disease, the 5-year survival rate of patients with proximal gastric cancer is only 10% to 15%. Although the treatment of patients with disseminated gastric cancer may result in palliation of symptoms and some prolongation of survival, long remissions are uncommon.
