Gallstones To prevent gallstones, eat a high-fiber, low-fat, low-sugar diet. When snacking, choose fruits and vegetables instead of cookies and crackers. People who regularly consume unhealthy foods that are calorie-dense, low in fiber, or high in fat are more prone to gallstones as well as troublesome problems with existing gallstones. Likewise, consume a diet rich in fiber folic acid (folate), omega-3 fatty acids , and vitamins B12 C , and E . These nourishing substances reduce the odds of stone formation by protecting against constipation and correcting nutritional deficiencies linked to gallstones. Maintaining an ideal body weight is also vital for preventing gallstones. Both obesity and a precipitous drop in weight are strongly associated with gallstone production. When dieting, aim for a gradual, one to two pound loss per week to avoid a rapid drop in weight. Finally, drink plenty of fluids, particularly six to eight glasses of water per day, to maintain adequate water content of the bile. Peppermint tea can be useful for the pain of a gallbladder attack, because peppermint helps relax spasms of the smooth muscle lining, the gallbladder, and bile ducts. In addition, robust plant compounds known as terpenes are plentiful in peppermint and are thought to have a gallstone-dissolving effect.

Gallstones Overview
Gallstones are lumps of solid material that form in the gallbladder. They usually look like small stones or gravel and can be as small as sand or as large as pebbles, sometimes filling the gallbladder and may take years to grow. The commonest ones are made up of cholesterol, which is a fat. Others are known as pigment stones and consist of calcium and red blood cells, which have broken down and solidified. The gallbladder is a small pear shaped pouch about three to six inches long. It is tucked just under the liver below the right rib cage and is connected to the intestine and liver by small tubes called bile ducts. Bile ducts carry bile, a greenish-brown fluid which is made in the liver. Bile acts like a detergent, breaking up fat from the food we eat into small droplets. It also enables the body to absorb vitamins A, D, E and K. Bile is concentrated and stored in the gallbladder ready for use and is only released when we eat food. Approximately 1 in 10 people will develop gallstones or another gallbladder disease. Anyone can get them, but middle aged, overweight women are particularly likely to. It is not fully understood why some people have them and others don't but gallstones are more common in the following groups of people:

Gallstones
Gallstones are common but usually cause no symptoms. They sometimes cause problems such as pain, jaundice, pancreatitis, and gallbladder inflammation. Surgery to remove the gallbladder is common.
Understanding the gallbladder and bile Bile is made in the liver. It is passed into tiny tubes called bile ducts. These join together (like the branches of a tree) to form the main bile duct. Bile constantly drips down the bile ducts, into the main bile duct, and into the gut. The gallbladder lies under the liver on the right side of the upper abdomen. It is like a pouch which comes off the main bile duct and fills with bile. It is a 'reservoir' which stores bile. The gallbladder contracts (squeezes) when we eat. This empties the stored bile back into the main bile duct. The bile passes along the remainder of the bile duct into the duodenum (the first part of the gut after the stomach). Bile helps to digest food, particularly fatty foods. What are gallstones? Gallstones occur when bile, which is normally fluid, forms stones. They commonly contain lumps of cholesterol-like (fatty) material that has solidified and hardened. Sometimes bile pigments or calcium deposits form gallstones. Sometimes just a few small stones are formed, sometimes a great many. Occasionally, just one large stone is formed. About 1 in 3 women, and 1 in 6 men, form gallstones at some stage in their life. They become more common with increasing age. The risk of forming gallstones increases with pregnancy, obesity, and if you take certain medicines. Being vegetarian and drinking a moderate amount of alcohol reduces the risk of forming gallstones.

The Basics
Symptoms Prevention What Are Gallstones?
Gallstones are crystal-like deposits that develop in the gallbladder a small, pear-shaped organ that stores bile, a digestive juice produced by the liver. These deposits may be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball; they may be hard or soft, smooth or jagged. You may have several gallstones or just one. Ten percent of men and 20% of women in the United States have gallstones or will develop them at some time in life, yet most of those who have the condition do not realize it. In this case, what you don't know probably won't hurt you; gallstones that are simply floating around inside the gallbladder generally cause no symptoms and no harm. These "silent" stones usually go unnoticed unless they show up in an ultrasound examination conducted for some other reason. However, the longer a stone exists in the gallbladder, the more likely it is to become problematic. People who have gallstones without symptoms have a 1% to 2% chance per year of having an episode of pain. When symptoms do occur, it's usually because the gallstone has moved and become lodged within the cystic duct, a small conduit that connects the gallbladder to another tube called the common bile duct. The typical symptom is abdominal pain, perhaps accompanied by nausea, indigestion, or fever. The pain, caused by the gallbladder's contraction against the lodged stone, generally occurs within an hour of eating a large meal or in the middle of the night. Stones can also clog the common bile duct, which carries bile into the small intestine.

What are gallstones?
The liver makes bile, a substance that helps to digest fats. If the bile has too much cholesterol, small particles called gallstones form. The stones may be in the gallbladder or bile ducts. The gallbladder is a small sac that lies under the liver and is part of the digestive system. Bile ducts are small tubes that drain bile from the liver into the gallbladder and small intestines. Biliary colic is the medical term for the extreme cramping pain caused by gallstones. The formation of gallstones in the gallbladder is called cholelithiasis.

Ohhh, that was good: southern fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy, biscuits dripping with butter and a slice of apple pie a la mode for dessert. Then, ow! That pain! What was that? Over 25 million Americans now have gallstones and about 1 million new cases are added each year.
What Is The Gallbladder?
The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped hollow sac nestled beneath the liver in the right upper abdomen. It stores about a quarter cup of a yellowish-green material called bile. Made in the liver, bile tastes bitter, and this is why the word bile has come to denote bitterness. A duct is a hollow tube that carries fluid from one place to another, like a water pipe in your home. The gallbladder is really just a side branch of the common bile duct, the main duct that drains liver bile into the small intestine. The side branch that connects the gallbladder to this main duct is called the cystic duct. These ducts carry the bile to the intestine. The pancreas usually shares a common drain with the liver via its pancreatic duct.
When bile enters the small intestine, it breaks up large globs of fat into smaller globs, a first step in digestion. A healthy gallbladder keeps bile flow moving like a mountain stream. However, when the gallbladder becomes diseased, the flow slows and the river turns into a swamp. The stagnant bile gradually crystallizes and the crystals clump together to form stones - like snowflakes making a snowball. (This is totally separate disease from kidney stones that form in the urinary system. Having one kind of stone does not increase your risk of the developing the other.)

  • What Is It? Gallstones are rocklike nuisances that can form inside the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a pouch that collects bile as it flows from the liver to the intestine through the bile ducts. Bile is a fluid that is made, in part, to help with digestion. The salts in bile make it easier for you to digest fat. However, bile also contains some waste products including cholesterol and bilirubin (created when old red blood cells are destroyed). Gallstones form in the gallbladder when cholesterol or bilirubin particles begin to cluster together into a solid lump. The stone grows in size as the bile fluid washes over it, much like a pearl forms inside an oyster.
