Less Traumatic Surgery For Sunken Chest in Children and Adults
Children and teens who suffer from funnel chest, or pecturs exavatum, now have a safe, less traumatic surgical alternative that uses plastic mesh bands in a single operation, versu the standard two-operation technique that uses a metal plate and body brace. Article in Annals of Thoracic Surgery by Jeffrey Gold, MD, a cardio-thoracic surgeon at Montefiore Medical Center, New YOrk City, who reports his success on 52 patients. New York City, NY - Children and teenagers who suffer from a condition called funnel chest, or pectus excavatum, in which the chest wall becomes caved-in, now have a safe, effective and simpler surgical alternative to correct the condition, according to an article in a recent issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
“The new technique reconstructs the chest wall in one operation by using plastic mesh bands instead of a metal plate with a body brace,” said Jeffrey Gold, MD, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Montefiore Medical Center and senior author of the article. “And, the bands do not have to be removed, because the body heals around them.”
The standard treatment for funnel chest involves wearing an uncomfortable body brace and undergoing two surgical procedures one to remove extra cartilage in the rib cage and to insert a metal plate behind the sternum, and another, later on, to remove the plate.

Pectus Excavatum ( Funnel Chest) Pectus Carinatum : Generally, surgery should be deferred till maturity. Operative correction involves subperichondrial resection of costal cartilages and sternal osteotomy. Complications are low and recurrences rare. Recurrence is limited to patients who have undergone a unilateral resection of costal cartilages or an inadequate resection of the deformity.

    Abstract
One-year-old girl was admitted because of recurrent pneumonia and pectus excavatum. Chest X-ray showed hyperlucency at the upper lung field and infiltrated shadow at the lower field of the left lung. Bronchoscopy and bronchograms revealed marked collapse in a long segment of the left main bronchus during expiration. CT scan showed an emphysematous change and a giant bulla of left lung. Angiogram showed right aortic arch. Sternoturnover was performed at 5 years of age for pectus excavatum. After 10 months, left pneumonectomy was performed for bronchomalacia and lobar emphysema. Pathologic findings of the bronchus revealed that the rings were flattened, while the cartilage was microscopically normal.

Voided Warranty General Stuff General Discussion PDA View Full Version : I Had Surgery and it Sucks TheGreatSatan 07-27-2004, 01:04 PM Recently I was diagnosed with having Sleep Apnea. In case you don't know, it's when you constantly stop breathing in your sleep and wind up only getting a couple good hours of sleep each night. I had a sleep study done and during that 6 hour period I stopped breathing 33 times!
Since I'm in the military, this could get me kicked out or at least have me lose my cop job. So I opted for the sugery which involves removing the tonsils, the uvula (that little thing hanging in the back of your throat), and excess flesh in the throat that may be impeding breathing.
I had the surgery on Friday and it's still killing me. For one, I can barely talk. Second, it hurts to swallow, even liquid, but I'm still drinking a gallon of water a day. Third, it just hurts, period. They gave me Oxycotin, but it just makes me dizzy and sleepy, and does not stop the pain. And ever since I had the surgery, I've had the worst headaches! I mean badder than bad.
So now you know how I'm doing and why I can't finish the side panel of my AF1 case or start on any other projects...
