Because of the great variablity of this congenital deformity among those who have it a custom made implant must be used. A plaster model is made of the deformity in the plastic surgeon's office. The model is then sent to the manufacturer who makes a custom silicone implant.
Note that the abdomen appears to protrude due to the chest depression. After placement of the implant it appears to protrude less even though its position has not changed. The first picture after surgery is about a month after. The second was taken about a year after surgery and shows the additional benefit of an exercise program after surgery as well as the self confidence patients develop after successful correction of this problem.
Correction of pectus deformity surgery can enhance your appearance and your self confidence. Realistic expectations are important to be happy with any surgery. As each patient is an individual, different results can be expected in each patient.

Funnel chest surgery
For more information, please call the Office of Public Relations, 718.920.4011 NEW, LESS TRAUMATIC SURGICAL TECHNIQUE CORRECTS FUNNEL CHEST IN CHILDREN NEW YORK CITY,NY (October 4, 2004) Children and teenagers who suffer from a condition called funnel chest, or pectus excavatum, in which the chest wall becomes caved-in, now have a safe, effective and simpler surgical alternative to correct the condition, according to an article in a recent issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery The standard treatment for funnel chest involves wearing an uncomfortable body brace and undergoing two surgical procedures one to remove extra cartilage in the rib cage and to insert a metal plate behind the sternum, and another, later on, to remove the plate. Funnel chest is caused by excessive growth of the cartilage that joins the ribs to the breastbone. The excess cartilage forces the ribs to curve in a manner that pushes the breastbone, or sternum, inward. To correct the problem surgically, the excess cartilage is removed. Then, using the plastic mesh bands, the straightened ribs and breastbone are brought together in a ways that pushes the sternum out.
