Foot Facts
3 out of 4 Americans experience serious foot problems in their lifetime. The foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles. 1/4 of all the bones in the human body are down in your feet. When these bones are out of alignment, so is the rest of the body. Only a small percentage of the population is born with foot problems. It's neglect and a lack of awareness of proper care - including ill fitting shoes - that bring on problems. Women have about four times as many foot problems as men. High heels are partly to blame.

FOOT INJURIES The body's foundation originates with the feet, which support the body weight in a myriad of positions and function over a multitude of surfaces and contours. Most athletic activity begins with and is dependent on the feet. As such, the feet continually bear the brunt of physical stresses and rapidly changing forces thrust on them from all directions. Injuries involving an athlete's feet are often magnified in severity because the feet are weight bearing structures. A relatively minor injury of the foot can impair an athlete's performance as dramatically as a major injury to another body area. Proper and adequate care should be given all injuries and athletic related conditions of the feet, no matter how minor they appear. FOOT CONDITIONS

The human foot contains 26 bones plus muscles, nerves, ligaments, and blood vessels-all designed for balance and mobility. The 52 bones in your two feet comprise about 25 percent of all the bones in your body. Podiatrists diagnose and treat disorders, diseases, and injuries of the foot and lower leg to keep this part of the body working properly. Here is a partial list of foot problems and treatments associated with feet: Orthotics are custom made shoe inserts that improve foot function and minimize abnormal foot stress. Orthotics are used to treat or prevent the causes of foot deformity and pain. Very few of us have perfect feet. Almost everyone can benefit from the correction and pain relief that orthotics can provide for conditions such as flat feet, heel pain, heel spurs, arch pain, foot fatigue, ankle pain, knee pain, hip and low back pain, mild bunions, hammer toes, and arthritis. As the foot structure changes throughout your lifetime, you will need to be re-fitted because orthotics are not a "one-size fits all" solution.

Diabetes and vascular disease often take a terrible toll on our feet, and are a leading cause of hospitalization in the United States. An estimated 15 to 25 percent of all people with diabetes will develop serious foot problems such as infection, ulceration, gangrene or fractures. If untreated or undertreated, foot conditions can result in amputation of a toe, foot or leg. But active management by specialists trained in treating foot-related complications of diabetic and vascular disease can greatly improve outcomes.
