The foot consists of 26 bones, 120 ligaments, 33 joints and 20 separate muscles which work together to control the movement of its individual parts. The foot contains almost one quarter of the body's bones. When you combine the structural complexity of the foot and the fact that the average person takes about 5,000 steps a day, it should come as no surprise that many common ailments exist. The following is a list of some of the most common conditions, and below is a brief description of the condition and treatment. Always consult your physician about your particular condition. Arthritis Arthritis is a condition that causes the inflammation and swelling of your cartilage and lining of the joints. Since your foot is composed of 33 joints, arthritis tends to start in your feet first. This condition is common in people over the age of 50, but has started at earlier ages. Treatment for arthritis in your feet varies depending upon the severity of the condition. Some treatment options include medication, physical therapy, special shoes and

Foot Conditions
Your feet are an amazing combination of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and other soft tissue. They bear the pressure of all the weight of your body. This stress, combined with a number of other factors like heredity, aging and even poor fitting shoes, can cause the development of painful foot problems. To determine the exact nature of your problem, an orthopaedic foot specialist will conduct a thorough examination of your foot. Once the evaluation is complete, your doctor will discuss surgical or non-surgical options that may be appropriate for a number of conditions: Calluses
Callusees, which typically develop on the ball or heel of the foot, are composed of hardened patches of dead skin cells. The skin on the sole of the foot is ordinarily about forty times thicker than skin anywhere else on the body, but a callus can double this normal thickness. A protective callus layer naturally develops to guard against excessive pressure and chafing. Calluses can develop from wearing poorly fitting shoes and walking on hard surfaces. Treatment involves relieving the pressure on the skin, usually by modifying the shoe. Pads to relieve the bony pressure are also helpful, but they must be positioned carefully.

Fat Pad Atrophy Fat Pad Atrophy can occur in the metatarsal area of the foot or in the heel. It is the thinning or decreased size of the fat pad that serves as a natural cushion for the foot. When occurring in the heel, heel pads or cushions should be inserted in the shoe to protect the heel from heel strikes and skeletal reverberations. When occurring in the forefoot, padded insoles can help cushion the tender areas of the foot.
Symptoms: Heel pain, which is worsened by walking on hard surfaces or with shoes with poor cushioning.
Recommendation: Soft Point® Heel Cushions

Soft Point® Full Insoles Viscolas® Heel Pads ... Viscolas® Sports Full Insoles Heel Pain/Heel Spurs People of all ages can be affected by heel pain. A heel spur is a bone outgrowth on the plantar aspect of the heel bone. Symptoms: A sharp pain on the bottom or inside edge of the heel may be felt in the morning or after resting. A dull ache may be present after standing on a hard surface for any length of time or after running. Even though the pain is located in the heel, it is usually an inflammation of the plantar fascia.

Here are some slightly less common ailments that might also cause concern. Remedies and relief for these conditions and symptoms are usually relatively simple - most frequently involving orthotics, minor lifestyle or exercise changes and - on occasion - the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. But you should consult your GP or podiatrist if you suspect any of these conditions may be affecting your feet.
Arthritis can affect various part of the body and the foot is prone to two variants of this often-painful ailment.

Summary of "fungus" concepts:
Fungi can only live on dead things (That is its ecological niche in our world.)and that fact determines what they can do to people. The surface of your skin is dead as is all nail tissue and hair. The stuff that goes through your intestinal tract is mostly deadthe only exceptions are the normal (or abnormal) bacteria and parasites that may be present. The problem is that once any fungus gets established on that dead tissue that it can actually invade any adjacent tissue that is less than vigorously healthy. The metabolic toxins excreted by the living fungi can kill adjacent tissue and THEN it is dead and the fungi can live on it.
Fungi love dark, moist areas with plenty of dead tissue for it to eat. This is why feet are a favorite place for them to grow. Today's life styles have us wearing shoes, with poor ventilation, and the stored stress-effect causes feet to be more sweaty. Cold feet, which are very commonly associated with sweaty feet, are an indication that less circulation (immunity) is reaching the area. If the dead skin is not removed from between the toes each day (terrycloth buffing) it builds up and that is why most "athlete's foot" begins between the toes.

Toenail fungus Vinegar treatment TESTIMONIALl
Posted by Willa on January 08, 2003 at 01:14:59: In the hopes of inspiring other suffers, here's my TESTIMONIAL about the vinegar treatment for toenail fungus. It's only been 10 days since starting the vinegar toenail fungus treatment on my husband. I'm posting this so soon because I'm afraid I will forget in the press of my day-to-day affairs to share the WONDERFUL results. I'm not even sure what my darling husband has is a toenail fungus but his toes' response to the vinegar is noticeable in only a few days. I've yet to get a definitive description of toenail fungus; my husband's big toenails are (were?) very thick, and after his bath they had a thick white gooey substance underneath the nails. They are painful at times, and trimming his toenails was an unpleasant ordeal. If I touched them the wrong way, by putting even a slight pressure on the top of the nail, he let me know how painful it was. Cutting them would take two hands to be able to put enough pressure on the clippers to make them snip through the nail, which would flake off and leave jagged pieces. It was painful for him to even have me run an instrument under the nail to clean out underneath and forget about the edges and corners, which seemed to grow down into the skin. Up to this time I had no idea he had a fungus; I'd never even heard of the term "toenail fungus." I just thought he had very strange toenails but they were getting worse and we'd even had to buy him some new shoes with rounder, larger toes to keep all pressure off his toenails. Then, I happened upon a little article in the newspaper about sticking one's toe in a lemon overnight to get rid of toenail fungus and that made me start wondering about my husband's toes. And then I happened upon this wonderful site.

BUNION SURGERY:
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE CONSIDERING BUNION SURGERY. Many times modification of shoe gear can alleviate the pain of bunion deformities. There are many types of surgical procedures used to correct bunion deformities. Depending on the procedure your surgeon chooses, recuperation from bunion surgery can take between three weeks to six months. Bunion surgery is not primarily a cosmetic surgical procedure and should only be considered if you are having pain that cannot be relieved by changing shoe gear.
BEFORE If you wear high heel shoes, understand that bunion surgery SHOULD relieve your pain. BUT narrow high heels may continue to irritate the area. IF YOU ARE STILL CONSIDERING HAVING BUNION SURGERY.
