10. Common Foot Conditions And Ailments
Brief descriptions of common foot conditions and common foot ailments.
http://karitegold.com/common-foot-conditions-ailments.htm
Common Foot Conditions
There are many foot ailments that affect large numbers of people. In most cases, these common condtions and ailments respond well to treatment.
Arthritis
Artho means joint and itis means inflammation. There are approximately 38 causes of arthritis and most of these conditions affect the human foot. The most common of these conditions is osteoarthritis. This is the simple wearing and tearing away of the cartilage of the joints. Age, excessive weight, ill-fitting shoes and trauma (injury) are the basic causes of osteoarthritis. Fortunately, this condition is very treatable. The first step in the diagnosis of arthritis is a good complete history. The second step is an x-ray evaluation to view the bone structure of the foot. In more advanced cases of arthritis an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CT scan (computerized axial tomography) are extremely helpful. In more complicated cases of arthritis, blood tests are used to differentiate between one arthritis type and the next.
Athletes Foot and Fungus Problems
Athlete's foot typically affects the skin on the feet between the toes, but can move anywhere on the foot and can affect the toenails. Athlete's foot is an infection of the skin and the nails, usually on the feet. The infection is usually found on the skin between the toes. Sometimes the fungal infection spreads to the toenails, which become thick and distorted. Fungi are plant organisms (tinea pedis) such as mold and mildew and grow best in conditions that are moist. Bacteria may thrive as a secondary infection, which worsens the symptoms of the disorder and makes it more difficult to cure. A fungal infection is one of the most difficult nail and foot conditions to treat.

Abstract
There are 14 million diabetics in the United States. Approximately 25% will develop foot problems and 6 to 10% will undergo amputation. Diabetics spend more time in the hospital for foot complications than for all other aspects of their disease combined. Evaluation of foot complications requires optimal diagnostic imaging targeted toward the area of abnormality. MRI has been increasingly used in the evaluation of diabetic foot disease due to its superior anatomic resolution of bone and soft tissue pathology.
This exhibit will demonstrate methods to optimize diabetic foot imaging protocols and review imaging findings in various diabetic foot conditions. This will including cellulitis septic arthritis abscess and sinus tract formation, osteomyelitis gangrene , and charcot foot disease with attention to the differential diagnosis of various pathologic findings. Comparison of different imaging approaches will be made, with emphasis on current MRI techniques. Post operative diabetic foot complications along with imaging approaches to follow these patients geared toward their potential problems will be demonstrated.

Prevention of Foot conditions
Prevention of Foot conditions: Practice good foot care. Check your feet regularly, or have a member of your family check them. Podiatrists and primary care doctors (internists and family practitioners) are qualified to treat most foot problems. Sometimes the special skills of an orthopedic surgeon or dermatologist are needed. It also helps to keep blood circulating to your feet as much as possible. Do this by putting your feet up when you are sitting or lying down, stretching if you've had to sit for a long while, walking, having a gentle foot massage, or taking a warm foot bath. Try to avoid pressure from shoes that don't fit right. Try not to expose your feet to cold temperatures. Don't sit for long periods of time (especially with your legs crossed). Don't smoke. Wearing comfortable shoes that fit well can prevent many foot ailments. Here are some tips for getting a proper shoe fit:

Foot Conditions
What Do Podiatrists Treat? The podiatric physician cares for people of all ages, treating any foot problem. Common disorders include:
  • bunions
  • heel pain/spurs
  • hammertoes
  • neuromas
  • ingrown toenails
  • warts
  • corns
  • calluses
The podiatric physician also cares for sprains, fractures, infections, and injuries of the foot, ankle, and heel. If your podiatric surgeon is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, he or she has successfully completed a credentialing and examination process, and has demonstrated knowledge of podiatric surgery, including the diagnosis of general medical problems and surgical management of foot diseases, deformities, and trauma of the foot, ankle, and related structures. Besides treating these conditions, podiatric surgeons are uniquely qualified to detect the early stages of diseases that exhibit warning signs in the lower extremities, as well as manage those foot conditions which can pose an ongoing threat to a patient's overall health. Such illnesses include diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.
