What to do in the case of food poisoning
Note: If you or your child have eaten something that is poisonous
Contact the POISONS INFORMATION SERVICE immediately on (Australia wide freecall) or seek medical advice. If you are unlucky enough to have a complaint about some food you've bought, here's the best way to handle it.
  • Don't eat food if you are suspicious about it.
Speak with the supplier of the food - shopkeeper, restaurant, or whoever. Explain what the problem is and ask that they note it.
Contact the local government responsible for the area in which the food outlet is located. Ask to speak with an Environmental Health Officer , who has the power to investigate food complaints and take action against those responsible for causing the problem. Your notification may also enable others in the community to be protected from the same problem.
If symptoms are severe, or if the person with the food poisoning is very young, very old or immunocompromised, see a doctor as soon as possible. If you suspect a food is to blame, keep the food wrapped in the fridge so a sample can be tested. For information on types of gastro-intestinal illness including food poisoning see the Guidelines for the Investigation of Gastrointestinal Illness

Symptoms of ciguatera poisoning include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and numbness. You may notice a change in your ability to feel cold. Introduction: Food poisoning
Food poisoning: Food-borne illnesses are very common and are most commonly due to bacteria or other microbes in food. Food poisoning differs from a food intolerance or food allergy which occurs when a person cannot tolerate a food, but it is not poisonous to others. Typically, food poisoning causes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, but there are exceptions such as botulism which often has nerve symptoms rather than digestive symptoms. Several types of food poisoning also resemble cold or flu in their early stages.

Bacillus cereus
Bacillus cereus food poisoning
Bacillus cereus Spore Stain Bacillus cereus has been recognized as an agent of food poisoning since 1955. Between 1972 and 1986, 52 outbreaks of food-borne disease associated with B. cereus were reported to the CDC, but this is thought to represent only 2% of the total cases which have occurred in that time. B. cereus causes two types of food-borne intoxications (as opposed to infections). One type is characterized by nausea and vomiting and abdominal cramps and has an incubation period of 1 to 6 hours. It resembles Staphylococcus aureus food poisoning in its symptoms and incubation period. This is the "short-incubation" or emetic form of the disease. The second type is manifested primarily by abdominal cramps and diarrhea with an incubation period of 8 to 16 hours. Diarrhea may be a small volume or profuse and watery. This type is referred to as the "long-incubation" or diarrheal form of the disease, and it resembles more food poisoning caused by Clostridium perfringens.

BRITISH MEAT
FOOD POISONING
On January 12 1998, The British Medical Association warned in a report to Members of Parliament in London that all raw meat should be considered infected and a possible source of food poisoning. "The current state of food safety in Britain is such that all raw meat should be assumed to be contaminated with pathogenic organisms," the report said. The BMA report went on to record that the number of cases of food poisoning was at its highest ever in 1997. One million people infected by salmonella or E. Coli 0157 bacteria. 200 people died as a result. "The only safe approach for the food industry and general public is to treat all raw meat as infected and adopt universal precautions in handling and cooking raw meat," the report concluded.

Definition Food poisoning is the result of eating organisms or toxins in contaminated food. Most cases of food poisoning are a result of common bacteria like Staphylococcus or E. coli
Food Poisoning
Antibodies Food poisoning can affect one person or it can occur as an outbreak in a group of people who all ate the same contaminated food. Even though food poisoning is relatively rare in the United States, it affects between 60 and 80 million people worldwide each year and results in approximately 6 to 8 million deaths. Food poisoning tends to occur at picnics, school cafeterias, and large social functions. These are situations where food may be left unrefrigerated too long or food preparation techniques are not clean. Food poisoning often occurs from undercooked meats or dairy products (like mayonnaise mixed in cole slaw or potato salad) that have sat out too long.

Contact Us Site A-Z Quick Answers Jobs at the Council Search Home Christchurch Community The Council ... Services Clostridium Perfringens March 1998 Clostridium Perfringens food poisoning is a reasonably common intestinal intoxication caused by toxins produced by the Clostridium perfringens bacteria. The Symptoms
Symptoms begin 6 to 24 hours, (but usually 8 to 12 hours) after eating and consist of the sudden onset of acute abdominal pain followed by diarrhoea. Nausea is common, but fever and vomiting are usually absent. The diagnosis is confirmed by a laboratory test on a faecal specimen, with an outbreak being confirmed by tests on suspect foods. The illness occurs when people swallow the bacteria or spores formed by them which then multiply and produce toxin in the intestine, or from eating the toxin already produced in food. It's Source
  • food contaminated by soil or faeces and then kept under conditions that allow the bacteria to multiply.
  • inadequately heated or reheated meats, usually stews, meat pies, and gravies made of beef, turkey or chicken.
  • the intestinal tract of healthy people and animals (cattle, pigs, poultry and fish).
