New flu drug not recommended for FDA approval
The experimental flu drug zanamivir is taken twice a day through an inhaler February 24, 1999

Web posted at: 6:05 p.m. EST (2305 GMT)
GAITHERSBURG, Maryland (CNN) By a vote of 13 to 4, a Food and Drug Administration advisory committee Wednesday recommended against approval of an experimental drug to treat the flu. Members of the Anti-Viral Drugs Advisory Committee said they were not concerned about the safety of the drug, but were concerned the drug was not effective enough. The largest study on zanamivir was done in the United States. Results showed that people who took the drug felt better in five days, compared to six days for people who took the placebo. European and Australian studies showed the drug brought relief one and a half to two and a half days earlier than the placebo drug. The drug appeared to help alleviate symptoms such as fever, cough, muscle aches and fatigue.

    Vaccine for bird flu tests well, but making enough may be problem
    By Lawrence K. Altman and Keith Bradsher The New York Times MONDAY, AUGUST 8, 2005 WASHINGTON U.S. government scientists say they have successfully tested in people a vaccine that they believe can protect against the strain of avian influenza that is spreading in birds through Asia and Russia. Officials have been racing to develop a vaccine because they worry that if that strain mutated and combined with a human influenza virus to create a new virus, it could spread rapidly. Tens of millions of birds have died from infection with the virus and from culling to prevent the spread of the virus. About 100 people have been infected, and about 50 have died from this strain of the avian influenza virus, called A(H5N1). So far there has been no sustained human-to-human transmission, but that is what health officials fear, because it could cause a pandemic. The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said that while the vaccine that has undergone preliminary tests could be used on an emergency basis if a pandemic developed, it would still be several months before that vaccine was tested further and, if licensed, offered to the public.

New choices in flu treatment

Source: WebMD (CNN) Treating the flu may now be as easy as taking a pill, but it is a pill that has to be taken every day for six weeks in order to work. The FDA approved the drug, Tamiflu, Wednesday. Tamiflu, generically known as oseltamivir, is the second in a new class of flu drugs that will hit the market this year. A similar flu drug, called Relenza, was approved for marketing in July.

    http://people.ku.edu/~jbrown/flu.html
    ~~~ T he F lu is a B ummer!
    Have you ever wondered why it is that we have such trouble with influenza? Why don't we just get immunized once, and never need to worry again? Why is it that if we have the "flu", we can "catch" the "flu" again and again? Unfortunately, many organisms have RNA as their basic genetic material; and, as stated above, influenza viruses are an example. The common cold-causing viruses, are also RNA viruses (poliovirus belongs to the same virus family, the picornavirus family). HIV is another example (however, is a retrovirus - makes DNA from its RNA genome). So, what's the deal here? Why does RNA in viruses make any difference to us? There is no "spell checking" of the RNA document when viral genetic material is replicated. The enzyme which copies RNA (RNA-dependent RNA polymerase - means the enzyme must recognize RNA to make a replicate of RNA) does not have this ability. Consequently, errors can be generated and the copied material is said not to have proper fidelity (poliovirus may be an exception - the RNA genome of this virus is replicated with very high fidelity - and it is said that poliovirus is very antigenically stable; therefore, there are only three poliovirus "types" identified - my thanks to Tom Terry, University of Connecticut for the reminder). The fidelity of poliovirus RNA replication is the reason that immunization against this virus has been so successful - see Good News about a Bad Bug, this series).
    FDA panel: Nasal flu vaccine not safe
    WASHINGTON (CNN) An advisory committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration voted Friday that a new nasal flu vaccine spray was effective, but not safe for most people. The committee's findings were based on data from more than 24,000 people from ages one to 64 years. The panel voted 10-4 against the overall safety of FluMist, made by Aviron Pharmaceuticals of Mountain View, California. The company intended the product as an alternative to the standard flu vaccine shot. Unlike the injection, it is made from weakened live flu virus, rather than killed virus. Earlier on Friday, the panel voted 13-2 in favor of the effectiveness of the spray for the adult population, ages 18 to 64 years. However, the panel only narrowly found the nasal vaccination to be effective for the pediatric and adolescent population by a vote of 8-7. The panel did not vote on whether it would or would not recommend the vaccine to the FDA, citing the need for more research data. It is not clear when the FDA will decide whether or not it will approve the drug.
    About
    This is just a small library of FLTK widgets that I have been working on for another application ( VolSuite , if you're interested). They are available under the same LGPL-compatible license as FLTK. They are designed to work with FLTK 1.1.x and seem to work pretty well on most systems, although my testing has been far from exhaustive. There is a configure/Makefile included which should compile on most *NIX/OSX distributions, as well as Cygwin and MinGW . I wrote the configure script by hand so don't blame autoconf if it doesn't work, blame me. There are also project files for Visual Studio 6 and Visual Studio .NET, as well as a directory of many example files to exersize most of the widgets. I don't work on the widgets much anymore, but if you find bugs, have feature suggestions, or just a general question, feel free to contact me directly (jbryan at osc dot edu) or via the FLTK mailing lists (if it is a question whose answer everyone could benefit from).
ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) The nation's health agency plans to closely watch flu complications among children, who have swamped hospitals in some states and surprised doctors with the severity of their illnesses. A new concern is the rise of a common drug-resistant staph infection that is complicating efforts to treat children with the flu, an official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday. Dr. Tim Uyeki, epidemiologist with the influenza branch of CDC, said that some children have died from the staph infections a phenomenon the CDC has not seen before.
    Your stomach cramps up. Fever skyrockets. Your whole body aches. And it's not just you. An influenza pandemic has broken out. Everybody is passing it to everybody. Right? Maybe not. It could be that increasingly frequent sunspots are driving the virus out of the stratosphere and into your body. So say Sir Fred Hoyle and Chandra Wickramasinghe of the University of Wales at Cardiff . And while there is much doubt by many other scientists that the flu comes from space, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe are generating a lot of interest with their idea. In a new paper, to be published in an upcoming issue of the Indian journal Current Science , the researchers present data that show how previous periods of high sunspot activity coincided with flu pandemics (large-scale epidemics). A roughly 11-year cycle of solar activity is increasing now and is expected to peak soon, other scientists agree.
