FLU SHOT QUICK FACT
In 2004, the Public Works Department bought about 10 million doses of flu vaccine. In 2003, it bought 10.4 million doses and had a surplus of two or three per cent The health-care system is making gains in the fight with the flu, a scourge that contributes to the deaths of thousands of Canadians every year, chokes hospital wards each winter and increases the pressure on strained budgets.
It is a highly contagious respiratory disease that strikes as many as eight million people in flu season, between October and March.
While flu and cold symptoms are similar, influenza is much more serious because it drastically reduces the body's ability to fight off other infections.

Improperly Made Flu Vaccine Given to Millions of Americans
Americans reeled into a state of panic after hearing one of the United States' only flu vaccine suppliers, Chiron, could provide a mere half of the 100 million promised flu doses for the 2004 season. Now, according to a 2003 report given to Congress, that same British plant sent improperly made vaccine, by mistake, to U.S. consumers just three years ago. Moreover, whether that vaccine stayed potent and sterile through its expiration date is in questionwhy? Because the plant:
  • First strayed from approved manufacturing methods (including everything from having proven procedures to strong quality control, testing and record-keeping) Then failed to document whether that would adversely affect the vaccine's quality over time
Not only do these findings cast a negative light on the British plant, but it also raises dubious eyebrows regarding the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) clear oversight of the plant and vaccine industry. It wasn't until more than a year after millions of people were given a dose of the "mishap vaccine" (for the 2001-2002 season) when the FDA discovered the mistake during a plant inspection in mid-2003. Further, after a close examination, it appears many unreported details about the plant's vaccinemost of which was for the U.S. marketwere revealed.

HONG KONG - Chinese authorities have banned local reporters from visiting areas where an outbreak of a pig-borne disease has killed 34 farmers, ordering newspapers to use dispatches from the state news agency, a Hong Kong newspaper reported Sunday. A total of 174 confirmed or suspected cases have been linked to the bacteria streptococcus suis in China's southwestern Sichuan province, where farmers who handled or butchered infected pigs have been sickened in dozens of villages and towns. Symptoms include nausea, fever, vomiting, and bleeding under the skin. Sichuan authorities have ordered local journalists to stay away from locations where the disease surfaced, and told newspapers to instead carry stories as issued by the official Xinhua News Agency, including the headline, Hong Kong's Ming Pao Daily News reported. Calls to Sichuan's provincial government headquarters in Chengdu seeking confirmation of the media ban went unanswered.

Give U.S. flu vaccines to the weakest, says AMA
WASHINGTON (Reuters) The American Medical Association (AMA) Thursday urged grocery and drug stores and other distributors of flu vaccine to lend their precious supplies to doctors, nurses and health-care centers so the neediest people could get their shots first. Officials have warned repeatedly that shipments of flu vaccine are behind schedule this year, and they have asked that the healthiest people, who least need the vaccine, wait until December to get their shots.

Studies split on flu vaccine's value for workers, day-care kids
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Flu vaccines could help day-care children and their school-aged siblings stay well and reduce the use of over-prescribed antibiotics, a new study suggests. But while the vaccine could also help keep adults under age 65 healthy and reduce missed work days, a cost-analysis conducted in another study found no savings in giving the flu shots to those adults.

(CNN) Influenza activity appears to be on the downturn in the United States, even as federal officials report more than 90 children have died of the flu this season. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that 38 states still had widespread activity, down from 42 reported previously. "We are cautiously optimistic that at least in some parts of the country, influenza may have peaked," CDC chief Dr. Julie Gerberding said Thursday. "But there's still plenty of flu out there, and we're still encouraging people with flu-like illness who meet the criteria for concerns or complications to be sure and seek medical attention if they do develop the illness." So far, 93 children under the age of 18 have died of the flu this season, with about 60 percent of them younger than 5. Whether this number is comparable to past outbreaks or is unique to this season is hard to tell, Gerberding said. The agency normally doesn't track children's flu deaths so no firm figures for the past exist.

What is influenza?
Influenza (also called "the flu") is a viral infection in the nose, throat and lungs. About 10% to 20% of Americans get the flu each year. Some people get very sick. Each year, about 130,000 people go to a hospital with the flu, and 20,000 people die because of the flu and complications. The flu may cause fever, cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches and tiredness. Some people describe the flu as being like the worst cold of their life. Most people feel better after 1 or 2 weeks. But for some people, the flu leads to serious, even life-threatening, diseases, such as pneumonia. Influenza vaccine (the flu shot) is recommended for people who are more likely to get really sick to protect them from the flu. Return to top

Hong Kong chicken flu sparks mass spring clean
By CNN's Hope Ngo HONG KONG, China (CNN) The Hong Kong government has launched a massive market clean up to avert an outbreak of 'chicken flu'. The government stepped up its campaign after local media reported that more birds were found dead at a fourth live fowl stall. Secretary for the Environment and Food Lily Yam denied criticism that the government had again reacted too slowly to contain the virus. "We have to act on the basis of confirmatory evidence, and in a situation like this, there are always people who would come out and (say) the action is too slow," Yam told reporters late Thursday. "If we have acted earlier, equally people would come out and say we are in panic," she said. The illness was rediscovered in Hong Kong on Wednesday, when nearly 800 chickens were killed by a strain of the H5N1 virus which officials say is not harmful to humans. More than six thousand birds have been destroyed at public markets where the sick chickens were found in an attempt to contain the virus.
