Flu season hits hard in New York
New York City hospitals have all they can do to keep up with the flu epidemic
February 1, 1999
Web posted at: 4:33 a.m. EST (0933 GMT) From New York Correspondent Cynthia Tornquist (CNN) The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports only scattered outbreaks of flu throughout the United States, but cites New York City as a place where the flu has really taken hold. City hospitals and doctors offices are doing all they can to keep up with the epidemic. "They've brought in extra doctors to handle the overload," said Dr. Peter Shearer of Elmhurst Hospital. "And even with that, you still end up with patients who can wait in the emergency room for 24 hours waiting for a bed." While officials haven't been able to pin down the total number of flu cases this winter, hospital staffs in New York say this past January has been one of the worst months in years.

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) Hundreds of thousands of flu shots ordered from Europe last year amid fears of a nationwide shortage now have expired and may go to waste, potentially costing taxpayers millions of dollars, officials said Wednesday. Illinois never even received the vaccine because the Food and Drug Administration would not approve its importation. Nor has it paid for the shots, though a British wholesaler has demanded its contract with the state be fulfilled. New Mexico and Cleveland which have also balked at paying were part of the deal as well, along with New York City. The shots, which are designed to be used within months of their manufacture because influenza strains vary from year to year, expired Monday, Illinois Deputy Gov. Bradley Tusk told The Associated Press. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich ordered at least 610,000 flu shots last October. The state agreed to pay about $2.5 million for 256,000 flu doses. The rest would have gone to New Mexico and the two cities.

Fight Flu and Pneumonia
What What is the Flu? How Serious is it? Influenza, also called the "flu," is a highly contagious respiratory infection.
  • Symptoms.
Flu can cause fever, chills, headache, dry cough, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and muscle aches. Unlike other common respiratory infections such as the common cold, influenza can cause extreme fatigue lasting several days to more than a week. Although nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can sometimes accompany influenza infection, especially in children, gastrointestinal symptoms are rarely prominent. The illness that people often call "stomach flu" is not influenza.
  • Spread from person to person.
Influenza is spread easily from person to person primarily when an infected person coughs or sneezes. After a person has been infected with the virus, symptoms usually appear within 2 to 4 days. The infection is considered often contagious for another 3 to 4 days after symptoms appear. Because of this, people used to think the flu was caused by the "influence of the stars and planets." In the 1500s, the Italians called the disease "influenza," their word for influence. Each year, an estimated 10 to 20 percent of the population contracts influenza.

E-Flu is not a virus. It is a hoax.
The hoax message includes the following:
I have some very startling news for all drivers in the NWST and ICRS/IDRS Leagues. Recently, a driver in both of the Leagues, Gary Kendall, and the Director of the NWST, Dave O'Brien, came down with cases of the E-Flu.
The E-Flu is a frightening new Computer to Human Virus that has no effect on computers but can potentially make users very ill. It is passed from computer to computer through the Internet, and then from computer to Human through either keyboard contact or diskette contact.
The good news, however, is that the Pullmer University of Medicine has posted a webpage with instructions for vaccinating yourself at home against this dangerous new illness. The vaccination page can be found at http://ww4.choice.net/~dhawk/pullmer/vaccine.html
If you have read any E-mail messages from either Gary Kendall or Dave O'Brien within that past week, then you need to perform the vaccination regardless of whether or not you're actually sick yet. Even if you'r not sick, you can still take measures to prevent the E-Flu.
Also on the vaccination page is a comprehensive list of those infected as well as a list of those potentially infected. So please, view the page at

World Not Set To Deal With Flu
Strategy for Pandemic Needed, Experts Say
By David Brown Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, July 31, 2005; Page A01 Public health officials preparing to battle what they view as an inevitable influenza pandemic say the world lacks the medical weapons to fight the disease effectively, and will not have them anytime soon. Public health specialists and manufacturers are working frantically to develop vaccines, drugs, strategies for quarantining and treating the ill, and plans for international cooperation, but these efforts will take years. Meanwhile, the most dangerous strain of influenza to appear in decades the H5N1 "bird flu" in Asia is showing up in new populations of birds, and occasionally people, almost by the month, global health officials say.

Bird Flu Drug Rendered Useless
Chinese Chickens Given Medication Made for Humans
By Alan Sipress Washington Post Foreign Service Saturday, June 18, 2005; Page A01 HONG KONG Chinese farmers, acting with the approval and encouragement of government officials, have tried to suppress major bird flu outbreaks among chickens with an antiviral drug meant for humans, animal health experts said. International researchers now conclude that this is why the drug will no longer protect people in case of a worldwide bird flu epidemic. China's use of the drug amantadine, which violated international livestock guidelines, was widespread years before China acknowledged any infection of its poultry, according to pharmaceutical company executives and veterinarians.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) With Americans rushing to get flu shots amid a severe and early flu season, the two makers of the influenza vaccine said Friday that they have completed their shipments for the year. Health officials said plenty of doses are still available at hospitals, HMOs and other health care facilities, though in some areas people may have to make an extra effort to find the vaccine. Health officials said flu has set in early this year, especially in Colorado, where eight children with the disease have died. Some regions have reported vaccine shortages, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it would work with the manufacturers, state health departments and others to assess the vaccine supply. "CDC is doing everything possible to assess the availability of flu vaccine to identify any locations that have supplies that may be able to be made available to locations that need vaccine," CDC director Julie Gerberding said in a written statement.
