(AP) The two makers of flu shots in the United States said Friday they have run out of vaccine and will not be able to meet a surge in demand resulting from fears of a particularly bad flu season. Nevertheless, the companies said people who have put off getting their shots may still be able to find them, since distributors and doctors' offices may still have some left. The companies, Chiron and Aventis Pasteur, together made about 80 million doses of the injected vaccine, which ordinarily would be enough to take care of U.S. demand. "Because of the recent outbreak, we've seen an unprecedented surge of vaccine orders late in the season," said Len Lavenda, an Aventis spokesman. "As a result, we have now shipped all our available supplies."

The Influenza Pandemic of 1918 The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed more people than the Great War, known today as World War I (WWI), at somewhere between 20 and 40 million people. It has been cited as the most devastating epidemic in recorded world history. More people died of influenza in a single year than in four-years of the Black Death Bubonic Plague from 1347 to 1351. Known as "Spanish Flu" or "La Grippe" the influenza of 1918-1919 was a global disaster.

Medical science for four and one-half years devoted itself to putting men on the firing line and keeping them there. WASHINGTON An entire flock of chickens on a farm in the United States has been destroyed after being diagnosed with a serious strain of bird flu. Weekend tests showed the Texas flock had the H5N2 strain of the virus, classified by the U.S. Agriculture Department as "highly pathogenic" to poultry. It is the first outbreak in the U.S. of a severe form of the disease in 20 years, when more than 17 million birds were killed at a cost of nearly $65 million, Reuters reported. Officials are not ruling out a human risk, but the U.S. Center for Disease Control says although the strain is fatal in animals, it does not pose a dangerous threat.

In light of the vaccine shortage announcement, the Lung Association is dedicated to maintaining the clinic listings offered here. Our Flu Vaccine Shortage Guidelines have been developed to ensure that the people most at risk for complications from the flu have access to the vaccination. While the clinics offered on this site are open to the public, due to the vaccine shortage only those at high risk of developing complications from the flu will be vaccinated. Clinics will be added daily as long as the vaccine supply lasts; please check back if you are having trouble finding a clinic in your area. Because of this year's shortage and the current reallocation of vaccine plan, you are encouraged to call ahead to make sure you will be able to receive the flu shot from the clinics promoted from this site. If you haven't gotten your flu vaccine yet, it's not too late the flu season usually peaks in January or February. At the beginning of January, priority groups for the flu shot will also be expanded in locations where state and local health authorities judge vaccine supply to be adequate to meet demand. HONG KONG, China (CNN) World Health Organization officials have warned an outbreak of bird flu that has been racing across chicken farms in Asia could become a bigger problem than SARS. Though WHO officials point out there is no evidence of human to human transmission nor is there any documented cases of infection through eating poultry products, they fear the disease may latch on to a normal human influenza virus. Avian influenza is being blamed for at least three deaths in Vietnam during an outbreak there and tests are underway to determine if the disease is responsible for nine more fatalities.

What to Do for Colds and Flu
The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is part of the U. S. government. FDA makes sure medicines for illnesses like colds and flu work and are safe. Is It a Cold or the Flu? For Your Safety, Know the Difference A cold and the flu (also called influenza) are alike in many ways. But the flu can sometimes lead to more serious problems, like the lung disease pneumonia. A stuffy nose, sore throat, and sneezing are usually signs of a cold. Tiredness, fever, headache, and major aches and pains probably mean you have the flu. Coughing can be a sign of either a cold or the flu. But a bad cough usually points to the flu. Know When to Call Your Doctor You usually do not have to call your doctor right away if you have signs of a cold or flu. But you should call your doctor in these situations:
  • Your symptoms get worse.

"Chicken Flu" - recombinant genes on the loose!
Dr Jamie Love The media have discovered what many scientists have known all along - viruses are amazing and scary. Unfortunately, the media are more concerned with scaring you than educating you, so you're wise to have found Science Explained
(Here we'll do both!)
Mankind has always been under the threat of a new, more dangerous virus emerging and causing massive epidemics. Our modern transportation systems make it all the easier for such a virus to spread quickly throughout the world. Man's constant exploration and encroachment in previously inaccessible parts of the world make it more likely that something nasty might emerge. However, it is worth noting that viruses have always been with us, evolving ways to reproduce and spread. Viruses, like humans, are just playing the evolution game.
But VIRUSES CHEAT What exactly is a virus? A virus is a bit of genetic material packaged in a protective coat. The genetic material may be DNA or RNA depending on the type of virus. The protective coat is called a capsid . Not only does it protect the delicate nucleic acid inside, but the capsid also helps the virus infect host cells. Some viruses have an additional outer

Feline upper respiratory tract disease - cat flu Cat flu is a common cat disease that can be life-threatening. Symptoms include sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis (inflammation of the lining of the eyes), discharge from the eyes, loss of appetite, fever and depression. Occasionally, mouth and eye ulcers and excessive drooling of saliva may be seen. The very young, very old and immunosuppressed cats are more likely to develop severe disease and possibly die as a result of their flu. Where death occurs this is usually because of secondary infections (infections with bacteria in addition to the flu viruses), lack of nutrition and dehydration. Who is at risk? Cat flu is most commonly seen in situations where cats are kept in large groups such as breeding catteries, rescue centres and feral cat colonies, although it can also be seen in pet cat households. Cats most at risk include unvaccinated cats, kittens, the elderly and cats which are immunosuppressed for any reason. In immunosuppressed cats, damage to the immune system has left them vulnerable to a wide variety of diseases with which they would otherwise be able to cope. Immunosuppression can be seen in cats infected with

Drug can prevent spread of flu in families
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) When someone comes down with influenza, giving the inhalant zanamivir to other family members can cut their risk of coming down with the flu by up to 72 percent, according to a study financed by the drug's maker, Glaxo Wellcome. There is a shortage of influenza vaccine in the United States this flu season. The researchers caution in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine, that while zanamivir is not a substitute for the vaccine, it might still be a valuable weapon.

Scientists previously believed that gene swapping progressed gradually from season to season. The National Institutes of Health team found instead, influenza A exchanged several genes at once, causing sudden and major changes to the virus. The findings in PLOS Biology suggest strains could vary widely each season, making it potentially harder to treat. Sudden mutations They also increase concerns about bird flu mutating to spread readily between humans. Each year, experts must predict which strains will be most common and design new vaccines to fight them. Dr David Lipman and colleagues looked at strains of influenza A that had circulated between 1999 and 2004 in New York. This research confirms the genetic diversity of influenza viruses and underscores potential for reassortment
