Every year in the U.S. , flu causes thousands of hospital admissions and deaths, mostly among the elderly, young children, pregnant women and people with chronic medical problems and weakened immune systems. How is flu spread? The viruses that cause flu live in the nose and throat and are sprayed into the air when an infected person sneezes, coughs or talks. People nearby can then breathe in the virus. Flu symptoms usually start 1 to 4 days after a person breathes in the virus. Adults with the flu can spread it from 1 day before symptoms appear to 1 week after. Children can spread the flu even longer after they get sick. How is flu treated?

Does the Flu Vaccine Really Protect the Elderly?
Now even the conventional media is echoing my earlier warnings on the flu vaccine . The nation's flu prevention strategy set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been called into serious question. According to this report, flu shots may prevent far fewer deaths in the elderly than previously thought. The report highlights that although immunization rates in the elderly (people over 65) have increased 50 percent in the past 20 years, there has not be a consequent decline in flu-related deaths. CDC's Rebuttal In regards to these claims, a CDC flu expert criticized the researchers' methods, arguing the conclusion drawn from the study is wrong. He went on to explain that there has been a 50 percent relative reduction in influenza deaths, and that although the vaccine could be improved to provide greater protection, it remains the most effective intervention for reducing influenza-related deaths. To further criticize the study, the CDC member pointed a finger stating the researchers:

Avian flu nightmare
18:57 JST Health and Medicine I was just reading an email from the ProMED medical mailing list I'm on. It was a monthly report on Avian flu outbreaks in Eastern Asia. Part of the report reads:
Source of outbreaks:
- introduction of new animals/animal products;
- illegal movement of animals. Control measures A. Undertaken:
- quarantine;
- movement control inside the country;
- disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s). B. To be undertaken:
- partial stamping out;
- vaccination. Treatment of affected animals: no. I read in the Wall Street Journal in the "We think this is sort of funny" section of the front page the other day, abut some guy who had invented a mass chicken slaughtering machine that picked up chickens by their feet and dragged their heads through electrified water. The machine could kill tens of thousands of chickens and was in high demand in countries where slaughtering these chickens has become an enormous task necessary to try to contain the outbreak. Then I remembered reading that scientists are really worried that this flu is going to mutate into a version that spreads between humans as rapidly as it is spreading between birds.

Drug may prevent spread of flu
FROM Drug may prevent spread of flu: It's no substitute for a flu shot, but the inhaled drug zanamivir (Relenza) may help people avoid contracting the virus from a family member who has the flu, a new study suggests. Frederick Hayden, M.D., and colleagues at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, found that zanamivir cut the risk of coming down with the flu by up to 72 percent within a family when one member becomes infected.

Some experts predict flu season could be grim
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Predictions of a heavy-hitting flu season and the slow delivery of influenza vaccine could spell trouble, experts say. Flu has already spread around the state of Colorado and reports of the virus showing up in Kansas and Nebraska have been confirmed. The World Health Organization says, according to data gathered so far, flu cases have been reported across the country since early October.

Flu pandemic preparations to be tested
Federal Health Minister Tony Abbott says the states and territories have agreed to test their readiness to deal with a flu pandemic in Australia. The World Health Organisation says there is a 10 per cent chance a flu pandemic will break out in the next 12 months. Mr Abbott says the issue was high on the agenda when he met his state and territory counterparts in Alice Springs today. He says the states and territories have assured him they are ready and have agreed to take part in a mock exercise before the end of the year. "That won't just be a desktop trial run but will be a live trial of getting our health system to start coping with the victims of bird flu, should it ever break out," he said. ACT Health Minister Simon Corbell says he is confident states and territories are well-prepared.

Study examines flu vaccine effectiveness
Story Tools ATLANTA,Georgia (CNN) This year's flu vaccine had little or no effectiveness against influenza-like illnesses, according to a preliminary study released Thursday. SPECIAL REPORT Overview History What is influenza? Special Report HEALTH LIBRARY Health Library All about influenza YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Flu Season or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? The study, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, looked at workers at Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Of the 1,000 people who got the vaccine before November 1, 149 went on to develop influenza-like illness (14.9 percent). Of the 402 people who did not get the vaccine, 68 got an influenza-like illness (16.9 percent), the study said. This year's outbreak started early and more severely than usual, sparking a run on vaccine by people eager to protect themselves. That depleted supplies. But the vaccine did not contain the Fujian A virus that proved to be the predominant strain this year. Despite public health authorities' hopes that there was enough overlap with the vaccine's other strains that some protection would be conferred, that does not appear to be the case.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (Reuters) A flock of 12,000 chickens in Delaware was destroyed Saturday in a bid to prevent the spread of avian flu, and state agriculture officials hastened to say the virus differs from the one that has killed people in Asia. The chickens were slaughtered on a farm in southern Kent County, Delaware, at 11:30 a.m. after two birds tested positive for the virulent H7 virus Friday, Delaware agriculture secretary Michael Scuse said. The virus is different from the H5N1 virus in Asia, Scuse said. That strain has forced the slaughter of millions of birds there and killed 18 people in Thailand and Vietnam who had come into direct contact with them. "The virus that is in Asia is a mutation of H5," Scuse said. He said the H7 strain found in Delaware is fatal to poultry but does not transmit to humans.

Health officials in white gowns, masks and gloves sealed off chicken and duck stalls in more than 130 markets in Hong Kong's public housing areas Sunday killing thousands of birds. They stuffed the carcasses into hundreds of garbage bags before hauling them in trucks to landfills. S. Korea racing to cull bird flu
Qurantine officials check a poultry farm in Chungcheong province in Umseong, southeast of Seoul. Story Tools SEOUL, South Korea (AP) Hundreds of soldiers were sent out to farms to slaughter chickens and ducks as South Korea raced to contain a highly contagious bird flu. Authorities have culled hundreds of thousands of farm birds since its outbreak earlier this month, and marshaled more than 400 soldiers over the weekend to help slaughter and bury them. Another 300 soldiers were called to duty Monday. Authorities on Monday also confirmed new infections at farms as far as 230 kilometers (143 miles) from the site in central South Korea where the disease was first detected, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry said in a statement. The new cases occurred in the southern towns of Gyeongju and Naju, where 1,230 birds died at two farms after being infected with the H5N1 virus. Out of 17 farms with reported cases of bird flu, nine have so far been confirmed and two have tested negative. Authorities were still investigating six others.
