Come along and follow me to the other side of some of the bridges I have crossed in my battle against Scleroderma. I embarked on this unexpected and unpredictable journey in the Spring of 1998. At the age of 40, with a 7 year old daughter, ( who is now 13 and just happens to be the joy of my life ), and a 20 year marriage already in the "check out" line, I realized that I was in the battle of my life...and for my life.
If you know much about Scleroderma, you know that there are several different forms of the disease, unfortunately, I have the Diffuse form, technically called "Diffuse Systemic Sclerosis". I have also been diagnosed with Raynaud's, Fibromyalgia, moderate Pulmonary Hypertension, GERD, Bursitis and Arthritis. You will hear more about these conditions in my "Bridge" segments.
Currently, other than the normal pain and the constant struggle to stay warm, my focal point is a problem

Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS)-a condition characterized by widespread, migrating, and often debilitating pain and fatigue which prevent the patient from accomplishing everyday tasks. It strikes mostly women between the ages of 20 and 50. The National Foundation for Fibromyalgia estimates that as many as 12 million Americans suffer with the disorder, yet remain un-diagnosed because of its elusive nature. Symptoms range from mild discomfort to complete debility and may vary from day to day. Over-exertion (physical activity), changes in weather, cold, dampness, or drafty environments, humidity, stress, anxiety, depression, and hormonal fluctuations can all contribute to flare-ups in FMS symptoms. Presently, no laboratory test can definitively identify a patient with FMS. Diagnosis is difficult since many other diseases and conditions also present similar symptoms. However, two criteria define the syndrome:

    New Support Group/Helpline/Awareness raising
I, myself, have battled for years to find a reason for my problems and finally I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Hypermobility Syndrome. What I have learned to realise is that no one appears to have heard of either and that there is little awareness or support for sufferers particularly in rural areas such as Herefordshire.
There are many groups throughout the UK which are mainly ME/CFS based but have FM sufferers in them as they share similar or overlapping problems but none of them come under the FMA UK umbrella. This is often the case in rural areas.
I feel that there must be many more FM sufferers out there in Herefordshire that would like to link up and move forwards raising awareness and supporting those newly- diagnosed and long-term sufferers.
Whilst many people are saying that ME and FM are very much linked, it is treated as a separate illness in the UK.
I am looking for anyone who is willing or able to help with any input whether for a support group or otherwise - ideas appreciated. Please e.mail me if you are interested or have any ideas or if you are an FM sufferer. It would help to know how may sufferers are in our County.

T his back pain, neck pain, and backache therapy website is a derivative work of the book, MAKING YOUR BAD BACK BETTER, with The O'Connor Technique (tm), How You Can Become Your Own Chiropractor , by William Thomas O'Connor, Jr., M.D.. and exists as a unique, novel, self-administered, diagnosis and treatment oriented, educational vehicle designed to alleviate and prevent the overwhelming majority of back pain and neck pain afflicting the overwhelming majority of people with pain of spinal origin . This remarkable (and admittedly hard to believe) claim is a conclusion arrived at through the author's extensive research and clinical experience demonstrating that the chief source of back pain, neck pain, muscle spasm, so-called "sprains or strains," even up to severe disability due to chronic backache or back pain originates in various stages of spinal intervertebral disc disease in which pieces of the intervertebral disc (disk) become pathologically displaced or herniated. The problem is often termed "mechanical" back pain and attributed to bulging discs, slipped discs, pinched nerves, whiplash, stiff neck, sciatica, torticollis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, low back sprain, etc.; however, even shoulder and leg pain can be caused by referred pain from the spine when the displaced disc material puts pressure on the intervertebral ligaments.

"Typically, their profiles show they have been through 2 1/2 courses of physiotherapy, have tried three types of medication with varying degrees of success and side effects, and they've tried chiropractic. They report temporary relief with traditional treatment modalities, but the pain returns." The typical Myosymmetries client is simply not willing to accept the pain and mental setback of living with pain or dysfunction. "These people are motivated - they want to get better. They take responsibility for their health. They are not content just to sit back and do whatever their doctor tells them." Stuart Donaldson, Ph.D.

Is There A Cure For Fibromyalgia?
This topic is huge and requires the explanation of pain in virtually every body part and side effects thereof including fatigue and brain fog. For this reason this article will be a little longer than most to follow. I apologize for the fact that I will be very technical in some of my explanations, so that pain physicians may appreciate some of the material as well. I will also recommend that the readers look through the website to gain a general idea of some of the new pain theories. Some reference may be given to these topics.
    What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is not a new condition. There are many names for this condition given all around the world and over hundreds of years of medicine. There is a tremendous controversy over its existence, and even more over it’s criteria for diagnosis. I will be assuming its existence, and I will not be arguing the criteria for diagnosis in this forum. Fibromyalgia has been around as long as there have been animals and humans. It can affect any person on the planet and is associated with many "Injury Factors" .The complete condition is more common in women, but it is also common in men, and I have seen it even in children and young people. At a basic level, most people with fibromyalgia are suffering from diffuse muscle and tendon shortening, driven in part by multiple nerve compressions throughout the spine and limbs. Spinal origins from the neck, mid back and low back figure prominently in it’s source of pain. It seems deep spinal muscles cause deep nerve compressions and traction that cause further muscle problems in the spine, limbs and head. Pain can be directly from the muscles crushing a joint, or from pain referring into the joint from the spine. Typically both exist at the same time. Headaches can exist from referred pain from the neck but also from local muscle problems around the head.
