Alternative Approaches, Home Remedies, and Herbs for Women Your body knows more about menopause than your doctor does! THE MENOPAUSAL YEARS by Susun Weed
excerpt from NEW Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way
What Are the Menopausal Years?

Human females are unique from all other females on two counts (at least): we menstruate; and we cease to be reproductively available after we've lived only half our life span. (Estrus bleeding in dogs is not menstruation.) The ancient women's mysteries tell us of the powers and initiations of these unique events: menstruation and menopause. This book focuses on the latter - the years of transformation from potential mother to wise, whole crone - the menopausal years.
Meno (menstruation) pause (stops) is, technically, the last menstrual flow of a woman's life. The years just before and just after the menopause itself are referred to as the climacteric. For most women the climacteric spans from early/mid 40s to late 50s/early 60s, including the premenopausal years, the menopausal climax years, and the post-menopausal years, popularly known as the Change of Life.
This Change is a metamorphosis (complete change at a cellular level). This metamorphosis follows, and may even be the matrix for, the three classic stages of initiation: isolation, death, and rebirth/reintegration. Each woman's Change includes these three stages, as well as three phases (before menopause, during menopause, and after menopause).

Welcome!
This site is dedicated to and was created for fibromyalgia, CFIDS, and other chronic illness sufferers who believe the in mind, body, spirit connection. It consists of a compilation of messages and book recommendations that I have created regarding living with a chronic illness. I have had FMS, MPS, dysautonomia, and CFIDS for over 13 years. I started to write small articles about the lessons I have learned from living with an illness about three years ago and sharing them on the FMS board on AOL. When I realized that not everyone wanted to hear positive messages, I decided to e-mail the articles only to those who were interested in reading themand an e-mail list was created. The list of articles and people who wanted to read them grew too large to handle through e-mail, and so this site was created. I continue to learn from and about this illness, and so I continue to write about subjects such as keeping a positive outlook, relying on spirituality to guide us through rough times, and also to relay helpful advice that I have read from many different sources.

Fibromyalgia
(Fibrositis)
Medical Author: William C. Shiel, Jr., MD, FACP, FACR What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition causing pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the muscles, tendons, and joints. Fibromyalgia is also characterized by restless sleep , awakening feeling tired, fatigue, anxiety, depression , and disturbances in bowel function. Fibromyalgia was formerly known as fibrositis. While fibromyalgia is one of the most common diseases affecting the muscles, its cause is currently unknown. The painful tissues involved are not accompanied by tissue inflammation. Therefore, despite potentially disabling body pain, patients with fibromyalgia do not develop body damage or deformity. Fibromyalgia also does not cause damage to internal body organs. Therefore, fibromyalgia is different from many other rheumatic conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis , systemic lupus, and polymyositis ). In those diseases, tissue inflammation is the major cause of pain, stiffness and tenderness of the joints, tendons and muscles, and it can lead to joint deformity and damage to the internal organs or muscles.

In Summary
What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common form of generalized muscular pain and fatigue. The name "fibromyalgia" means pain in the muscles and the fibrous connective tissues (the ligaments and tendons). This condition is referred to as a "syndrome" because it's a set of signs and symptoms that occur together. (A sign is what the physician finds on examination; a symptom is what a person reports to the doctor.) Fibromyalgia is especially confusing and often misunderstood because almost all it symptoms are also common in other conditions. In addition, it does not have a known cause. The name "fibromyalgia" has largely replaced the term "fibrositis," which was once used to describe this disorder. The "itis" means "inflammation" - a body process that can result in pain, swelling, warmth, redness, and stiffness. Early reports of this condition described inflammation in muscles. However, during the past 50 years investigators have proven that inflammation is not a significant part of fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a form of "soft-tissue" or muscular rheumatism rather than "arthritis of a joint." The word "rheumatism" refers to pain and stiffness associated with arthritis and related disorders of the joints, muscles, and bones. Fibromyalgia mainly affects muscles and their attachments to bones. Therefore, although fibromyalgia may feel like a joint disease, it is not a true form of arthritis and does not cause deformities of the joints.

"Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a painful, confusing, and frustrating condition. It has taken over my thought processes, my goals, my time, and my money for most of my adult life. It caused me to feel like a prisoner locked up in my own body. I was screaming to be released so that I could be a wife, mother, and friend to the many people that I loved and wanted to be with, but nobody was hearing me."
"Finally I have found some answers that have given my life back to me... I have reduced the pain of Fibromyalgia by eighty to ninety percent. Now I control FMS; it does not control me anymore."

Clinical surveys continue to indicate that routine orders for intramuscular injections of opioid "as needed" fail to relieve pain in about half of postoperative patients. Not all acute postoperative, procedural, or trauma-related pain can be eliminated, but several alternative approaches, when appropriately and attentively applied, prevent or relieve pain. The importance of effective pain management increases beyond patient satisfaction when additional benefits for the patient are realized, e.g. earlier mobilization, shortened hospital stay, and reduced costs. Patients have a right to treatment that includes prevention or adequate relief of pain.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivity- Heightened Senses Network is an online chemical injury support group and forum for those who have been chemically injured and suffer from any of the following chemically related illnesses: Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), Environmental Illness, Sick Building Syndrome, Toxic Injury, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Gulf War Syndrome among many other forms of chemical injury. MCS is a disorder triggered by exposures to chemicals in the environment. Individuals with MCS can have symptoms from chemical exposures at concentrations far below the levels tolerated by most people. Symptoms typically occur in more than one area in the body, such as the nervous system and the lungs. Exposure may be from the air, from food or water, or through skin contact. The symptoms may come and go with exposures, though some individuals may have delayed reactions. As MCS gets worse, reactions become more severe and increasingly chronic, often significantly affecting bodily functions. (Envionmental Illness Society of Canada)
