... Fibrosystic Breast Condition Fibrocystic breast condition is a term used to describe a group of benign breast findings which affect one-third of women between the ages of 30 and 50. Your physician may tell you your breasts are fibrous or cystic feeling. Your physician may also say you have chronic mastitis (inflammation) or mammary dysplasia.
Fibrocystic condition may affect one or both breasts. Not all women with fibrocystic condition will exhibit symptoms. For some, the first symptom will be finding one or more cysts in their breasts.
Years ago, it was reported women with "fibrocystic disease" carried a higher risk for developing breast cancer. Present evidence shows women with fibrocystic disease and other chronic benign breast conditions are more likely to develop breast cancer later in life only if a breast biopsy shows "atypia," or abnormal breast cells. Only a very small percentage of fibrocystic patients will show atypia. Most women with chronic benign breast disease and fibrocystic breast changes are not at higher risk for developing breast cancer.

Trial Information
Summary: Fibrocystic Breast Disease Study
Fibrocystic breast disease (FBD) is a benign condition in premenopausal women that is characterized by the presence of lumps and fluid-filled cysts in the breast(s) that tend to worsen during the 5 days to 2 weeks before the onset of the menstrual period. If you suffer from this condition you may notice that when you touch your breasts, you feel nodules, lumps and/or masses. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational nutritional supplement in managing the pain and tenderness associated with FBD. Study Duration: Approximately 4 Months Participant Qualifications:
  • In order to participate, you must:
  • Be a healthy non-pregnant, non-lactating, regularly menstruating woman between 18 and 50 years of age
  • Have routine menstrual cycles of 21-35 days and rarely or never miss a period
  • Have cyclical breast pain associated with the condition of FBD
  • Have daily access to a telephone line or cell phone and be willing to place calls to report on your condition
  • Agree to consume one serving (4 ounces) of study product (in beverage form) per day during your participation in this study
  • Provide a copy of a mammogram, report or physician statement of mammogram results within the last 12 months. In none is available a mammogram may be required.

Fibrocystic breast disease
Definition: Fibrocystic breast disease is described as common, benign changes involving the tissues of the breast. The term "disease" in this case is misleading, and many providers prefer the term "change." The condition is so commonly found in normal breasts, it is believed to be a normal variant. Other related terms include "mammary dysplasia," "benign breast disease," and "diffuse cystic mastopathy."
Alternative Names: Mammary dysplasia; Benign breast disease
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The cause is not completely understood, but the changes are believed to be associated with ovarian hormones since the condition usually subsides with menopause , and may vary in consistency during the menstrual cycle. The incidence of it is estimated to be over 60% of all women. It is common in women between the ages of 30 and 50, and rare in postmenopausal women. The incidence is lower in women taking birth control pills. The risk factors may include family history and diet (such as excessive dietary fat , and caffeine intake), although these are controversial.

CONDITION: Fibrocystic Breast Disease
DESCRIPTION:
Thirty percent of American women have fibrocystic breast disease, a benign condition characterized by round lumps that move freely within the breast tissue. The lumps are usually tender to touch, with increasing tenderness as menstruation approaches. How does fibrocystic breast disease develop?
The cause of fibrocystic changes is related to the way breast tissue responds to monthly changes in the levels of estrogen and progesterone, female hormones produced by the ovaries during a woman's reproductive years. Each month during a menstrual cycle, the breast tissue swells and returns to normal. Hormonal stimulation of the breast tissue causes the milk glands and ducts to enlarge and the breasts to retain water. Dietary factors, including consumption of caffeine, excessive saturated fats and salts, also may increase the risk of developing fibrocystic breast disease. In addition, with female-related conditions, an estradiol excess (which can occur by taking oral contraceptives or other synthetic forms of estrogen) often is found to be part of the patient's physiology. Knowing that the development of the disease may be closely linked to this factor, natural medicine practioners always address this excess in treating fibrocystic breast disease.
