Fibrocystic Breast Disease
What is the Definition of Fibrocystic Breast Disease?
Also called fibrocystic condition, fibrocystic change or cystic mastitis, fibrocystic breast disease is more a characteristic of the breast than a disease. It is often more prominent during ovulation and just before menstruation. top ^
Description of Fibrocystic Breast Disease
Fibrocystic changes occur during ovulation and just before menstruation. During these times, hormone level changes often cause the breast cells to retain fluid and develop into nodules or cysts (sacs filled with fluid), which feel like a lump when touched. The nodules or cysts can spread throughout the breast, may be located in one general area or simply appear as one or more large cysts. If the lump is not filled with fluid, it is called a fibroadenoma. A fibroadenoma is a solitary, firm distinct lump, composed of a mass or lump of fibrous tissue. Having fibrocystic breasts does not place women at a higher or lower risk of developing breast cancer top ^

Fibrocysts Gone!
I'm a 33 yr old Hispanic female who 5 yrs ago had surgergy removing 2 fibrocysts that were causing me a lot of pain. My OB/GYN suggested I go this particular surgeon she recommended. The surgeon's recommendation was surgery to remove the fibrocysts. I now have a scar around my nipple that is a continuous reminder of the biggest mistake I have ever made due to lack of information and relying on physician's opinion. NEVER DID THEY MENTION THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY YOU.
I have only used 1 bottle of progesterone oil and I am so happy to say that my fibrocyst is GONE. COMPLETLY GONE!! I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU, I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR YOUR RESEARCH AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR AVOIDING EXTREME ESTROGEN USE.
mfraga11@yahoo.com has graciously offered to talk to anyone about progesterone and fibrocystic breasts.

"Are there any herbs or natural treatments, other than less caffeine to help in treatment of fibrocystic breast disease? And why do the cysts keep getting harder? Does HRT therapy aggravate the situation? I am a 52 year old female, and was on HRT from 45 to 51 when cysts began to be more frequent and harder. I take vitamins and exercise on a regular basis. I would like to continue the HRT for other health benefits if it does not hinder the cysts. I am not currently taking anything prescribed by a doctor but am taking the herb black cohosh as my friends say it is helpful to them. ". Sasha Fibrocystic breast disease is an improper name; it is really a condition made up of many different pathological changes which we do not fully understand. Perhaps it should be called a syndrome or fibrocystic breast condition. There are three cell components involved: the skin lining the breast milk ducts (epithelium), the glands of the breast and the supporting stromal cells or matrix of connective tissue that lends fibrous fullness to the breasts. In general, estrogen stimulates growth of the ductal epithelium and growth of the supporting stroma or fibrous connective tissue. Progesterone or synthetic progestins make the glandular tissue grow. In pregnancy when both estrogen and progesterone are very high, the breasts are very full and almost hard. In menopause, without hormone replacement, the breasts are the opposite. They are collapsed and soft.

Fibrocystic Breast Changes
What are some common fibrocystic breast changes?
Generalized breast lumpiness is known under many different names, such as "fibrocystic disease" and "fibroid breasts." Many of these are misnomers since physicians and researchers now believe that these are just part of the breast changes which many women undergo throughout the various stages of their lives. Many physicians feel that this term has become a catch-all phrase for general breast lumpiness.
What do fibrocystic changes feel like?
Fibrocystic lumpiness is also described as "ropy" or "granular" and seems to become more obvious as a woman approaches middle age and the milk producing glandular tissue gives way to softer, fatty tissue. However, women with lumpy breasts may experience many other benign breast conditions. Lumpiness in the breasts may make actual lumps harder to distinguish. Thus, it is important that women with lumpy breasts perform regular breast self-examinations and have regular physical examinations, including mammography as indicated by the National Cancer Institute guidelines. Knowing the normal shape and feel of your own breasts is important, especially when performing examinations to detect any unusual breast changes. Click here to view the

Lump changes with menstrual cycle QUESTION: For the past couple of months, my wife has been getting a lump on the left side of her left breast near her armpit. The lump comes up before her period and goes away after she has finished her cycle. The lump has just returned for the third month in a row. We have read where this might just be associated with her period. Should we worry about it? Words on this page fibrocystic breast disease

ANSWER: In almost all instances, lumps that appear prior to the menstrual period and disappear or reduce in size substantially after the cycle are not worrisome. These types of changes are sometimes referred to as fibrocystic change . They are, in fact, more common in the upper outer aspect of the breast but may occur at any location. There is also a tendency for these changes to recur frequently during the pre-menopausal years. The exact cause of these changes is unknown, but probably represents an exaggerated abnormal response of the breast to the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. Lymph nodes in the armpit can also vary in size, as they respond to the day-to-day changes that occur in the breast, your arm (a bug bite, cut or rash), and the armpit itself (if you shave that area). If your wife has symptoms such as a specific area or lump in the breast that persists or enlarges progressively, further evaluation is recommended with physical exam, ultrasound, and possible mammography, and removal of fluid or tissue for analysis.

Age-related changes resembling fibrocystic disease in iodine-blocked rat breasts. Krouse TB, Eskin BA, Mobini J It has been reported that dietary restriction and chemical blockade of iodine causes histopathologic changes in peripubertal female rat breasts. This study extended the age range to include midreproductive life and perimenopausal rats; there is a wider spectrum of structural alterations that are associated with the older breast, with sodium perchlorate as the blocking agent. In 16-week-old rats, breasts showed general increased parenchymal activity and growth, regressing after removal of the block. In 42-week-old rats, breasts showed noticeable calcospherite deposition, intralobular fibrosis, and cystic changes resembling human fibrocystic disease. In 52-week-old rats, breasts exhibited atypical lobules cytologically, papillomatosis, sclerosing adenosis, calcifications, and a lobular transformation of a histologically dysplastic type. It is the older rat that experiments will more closely parallel the human condition.

There is nothing more terrifying to a woman than finding what appears to be a lump in her breast. While a lump should always be immediately reported to a doctor, and an appointment made for a diagnosis, women should know that ¡§lumpy¡¨ breasts are prevalent in about 60% of all women of childbearing age. Of these, only about 5% are indicative of a disease state and cause for concern. More often than cancer or other disease, the diagnosis is ¡§fibrocystic breast disease.¡¨ What is Fibrocystic Disease? The name ¡§fibrocystic breast disease¡¨ is an umbrella term used to describe a host of changes associated with women¡¦s breast tissue. According to the American Cancer Society, fibrocystic changes are most prevalent in women ages 30 to 50, and is also known as cystic disease, chronic cystic mastitis, or mammary dysphasia. Lumps in the breast are not always indicative of fibrocystic changes. The breast is a naturally lumpy entity, composed of milk glands, ducts, other fibrous tissue, and supporting ligaments. Fibrocystic condition usually occurs as a result of repeated hormone stimulation. This increases breast tissue firmness, leading to the formation of pockets of fluid in blocked or swollen milk ducts. Such tissue may feel lumpy, with areas of increased thickness, and may have a slightly raised edge. Alternatively, it could feel like tiny beads scattered throughout the breasts.

Fibrocystic Breast Changes: Lumps That Are Normal
by Elaine Gottlieb Do your breasts feel lumpy? It may be that youre experiencing fibrocystic breast changes”a benign condition that occurs in at least 60% of all women of child-bearing age. It sounds very unglamorous, but the human breast is no more than a lumpy gland made up of milk glands and ducts and the tissues that separate and support them. Most breasts have at least one or two lumps; however, if your breast feels especially lumpy and uncomfortable, you're probably experiencing fibrocystic breast changes.
What Are Fibrocystic Changes?
Fibrocystic changes are benign breast changes. The medical literature used to refer to them as "fibrocystic disease," but that was before fibrocystic changes were found to be no more a disease than menstruation or menopause. The breast tissue may feel dense with an irregular area of thicker tissue with a lumpy or ridge-like surface. You might also feel tiny bead-like masses scattered throughout the breasts. Your breasts may feel tender, swollen, and full with a dull, heavy pain. They may be sensitive to touch with a burning sensation. This discomfort is normal and does not indicate the presence of disease. For some women the pain is so severe that they cannot exercise or lie on their stomachs. Fibrocystic changes usually occur in both breasts, most often in the upper outer quadrant and the underside of the breast where most of the milk-producing glands are located.

Fibrocystic Breast Condition
Fibrocystic breast condition is a form of benign (noncancerous) breast change commonly seen in women prior to menopause. The symptoms of fibrocystic breast condition typically are tenderness, pain, lumpiness or swelling and are most noticeable just before you menstruate. Although you may experience pain throughout one or both breasts, the pain is frequently felt in the upper, outer region of the breast. Can benign lumps turn into cancerous ones?
Benign lumps do not turn into cancer, nor does fibrocystic breast condition increase your risk for developing breast cancer. However, cancerous lumps can develop near benign lumps and hide their presence. For this reason, regular checkups by a health-care professional, doing monthly breast self-exams and having mammograms per American Cancer Society guidelines are the best steps in the detection of breast cancer. Recommended Treatment
Important Note: Always consult with a physician prior to beginning any new treatments or diets. Although there is no treatment for normal, monthly breast changes, the following are some methods of treating the uncomfortable symptoms:

Medical Term:

FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE Common Name: Benign breast disease Description: Fibrocystic breast disease is a generalized term for non- malignant lumps in breasts, causing pain. Although it is called a disease, it is not really a disease. Therefore the term benign breast disease or fibrocystic condition would be more appropriate. The benign lumps are usually smooth, regular and mobile. At least 50% of women have benign breast disease during their lifetime. Affects women in childbearing years, more common age 30-50. Rare in menopausal women not receiving hormone replacement therapy. Fibrocystic breast disease is the most frequent cause of lumps in the breast. Causes: Causes of benign breast disease are unknown, but lumps are probably sustained by estrogen and possibly also related to dietary fat and caffeine intake. In some cases may be associated with increased levels of prolactin ( a hormone secreted by pituitary gland). Very little is known about genetic aspects of fibrocystic breast disease, but family history of cysts is common.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Most people in the United States have never heard of fibrocystic change, or fibrocystic breast disease, as it has also been called in the past. Yet the chilling fact is that about half of the women in the United States have it and do not know it. In most sources of information on breast health, the subject is given short, if any, notice, and many descriptions seem to assume that the reader is already familiar with it. In the following interview with Thomas Frazier, M.D., in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Nutrition Health Review has attempted to understand the disease from the point of view of a well-established doctor. Included in that understanding is the potential for dietary control over a condition that can make it fairly difficult to identify breast cancer.
