Fibrocystic breast disease
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: Fibrocystic breast disease is described as common, benign changes involving the tissues of the breast. The term "disease" in this case is misleading, and many providers prefer the term "change." The condition is so commonly found in normal breasts, it is believed to be a normal variant. Other related terms include "mammary dysplasia," "benign breast disease," and "diffuse cystic mastopathy".
Alternative Names: Mammary dysplasia; Benign breast disease
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: The cause is not completely understood, but the changes are believed to be associated with ovarian hormones since the condition usually subsides with menopause , and may vary in consistency during the menstrual cycle. The incidence of it is estimated to be over 60% of all women. It is common in women between the ages of 30 and 50, and rare in postmenopausal women. The incidence is lower in women taking birth control pills. The risk factors may include family history and diet (such as excessive dietary fat , and caffeine intake), although these are controversial.

Multimedia Fibrocystic Breast Disease Normally, the levels of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone fluctuate during the menstrual cycle. Milk glands and ducts enlarge and breasts retain fluid when levels increase, and the breasts return to normal when levels decrease. (These fluctuations partly explain why breasts are swollen and more sensitive during a particular time of each menstrual cycle.) Fibrocystic changes may result from repeated stimulation by these hormones. In women with fibrocystic breast disease, the lumpy areas may enlarge, causing a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, tenderness to the touch, or a burning pain. The symptoms tend to subside after menopause. Fibrocystic breast disease may increase the risk of breast cancer very slightly. Also, this condition may make breast cancer more difficult to detect.

Fibrocystic condition of the breast
Definition
Fibrocystic condition of the breast is a confusing term that refers to a variety of symptoms: breast lumpiness or tenderness, description of breast tissues under the microscope, and/or the x-ray or ultrasound picture of the breast. It has been called a "wastebasket" diagnosis, as a wide range of vaguely defined benign breast conditions may be labeled as fibrocystic condition. Description
There is no such thing as a typical or normal female breast. Breasts come in all shapes and sizes, with varying textures from smooth to extremely lumpy. The tissues of the female breast change in response to hormone levels, normal aging, nursing ( lactation ), weight shifts, or injury. To further complicate matters, the breast has several types of tissue, which may each respond differently to changes in body chemistry. Fibrocystic breast condition may be called fibrocystic disease, although it is clearly not a single, specific disease process. Variations or changes inthe way the breast feels or looks on x-ray may cause the condition to be called "fibrocystic change." Other names have been used to refer to this imprecise and ill-defined term: mammary dysplasia, mastopathy, chronic cystic mastitis , indurative mastopathy, mastalgia, lumpy breasts, or physiologic nodularity.

Fibrocystic Breast Changes
What are some common fibrocystic breast changes?
Generalized breast lumpiness is known under many different names, such as "fibrocystic disease" and "fibroid breasts." Many of these are misnomers since physicians and researchers now believe that these are just part of the breast changes which many women undergo throughout the various stages of their lives. Many physicians feel that this term has become a catch-all phrase for general breast lumpiness.
What do fibrocystic changes feel like?
Fibrocystic lumpiness is also described as "ropy" or "granular" and seems to become more obvious as a woman approaches middle age and the milk producing glandular tissue gives way to softer, fatty tissue. However, women with lumpy breasts may experience many other benign breast conditions. Lumpiness in the breasts may make actual lumps harder to distinguish. Thus, it is important that women with lumpy breasts perform regular breast self-examinations and have regular physical examinations, including mammography as indicated by the National Cancer Institute guidelines. Knowing the normal shape and feel of your own breasts is important, especially when performing examinations to detect any unusual breast changes.

Fibrocystic Breast Changes (Breast Lump)
Basic Information
Description A common condition of the female breast characterized usually by nonmalignant lumps and pain. It can affect females from puberty to around age 50 (about 20% of pre-menopausal women have the disorder). It often disappears after menopause (unless estrogen-replacement therapy is used). Since it is so common, it is no longer considered a disease, and is usually not a cause for concern Frequent Signs and Symptoms
  • Lumps are usually in both breasts. Solitary lumps may occur, but multiple lumps are common
  • Lumps offer resistance when pressed with fingertips; they may be tender
  • Generalized breast pain, especially just before menstrual periods
  • Lumps often enlarge before menstrual periods and shrink afterward
  • Lumps come in different sizes. When the lumps are relatively large and near the surface, they can be moved freely within the breast
  • Lumps deep within the breast may be indistinguishable from breast cancer
  • Nipple discharge
Causes Unknown, but probably related to estrogen and other hormones produced by the ovaries and possibly to dietary fat intake

This group of conditions is very common in younger women, occurring in about 20% of premenopausal females. Both breasts become tender or painful and lumpy, and the symptoms vary at different times in the menstrual cycle. Despite the fact that signs and symptoms of fibrocystic disease appear to be quite distinct from textbook signs and symptoms of breast cancer , any lump in the breast should be diagnosed by a healthcare professional to rule out the possibility of cancer. For many women, FBD is very treatable and preventable. For years, doctors have recommended that women avoid caffeine, high fat diets and so on, and even to take drugs with strong side effects. In some cases this helps, in others it doesn't. However, recent research has offered new hope because it has shown a strong connection between the wearing of bras and benign fibrocystic lumps

    Fibrocystic Breast Changes
    What are fibrocystic breast changes?
Fibrocystic breast changes are the most common cause of breast tenderness and breast lumps. Fibrocystic breast lumps are cysts; that is, fluid-filled sacs surrounded by fibrous tissue. These cysts are not caused by cancer. Fibroadenomas, another common cause of breast lumps, are solid lumps of fibrous tissue. They are not caused by cancer either.
    How does it occur?
The cause of fibrocystic breast changes is not known. Estrogen and other hormones produced by the ovaries may play a role. Drinking beverages and eating foods that contain caffeine and caffeinelike substances (methylxanthines) may also contribute to breast changes.
    What are the symptoms?

Fibrocystic Breast Disease Fibrocystic disease is a diagnosis based on finding breast pain, cysts, and noncancerous lumpy areas of the breast. But a study has discovered that about 80% of these cases are normal changes in breast anatomy and NOT associated with breast cancer. Women's Health Services Breast Self-Exam Almost three-quarters of women have been told by a healthcare provider that they have "fibrocystic disease," a diagnosis based on finding breast pain, cysts, and noncancerous lumpy areas in their breasts. This diagnosis seemed to be rampant about two decades ago. But a study by the National Cancer Association Consensus Committee discovered that about 80% of what is called "fibrocystic disease" is actually normal changes in breast anatomy and is NOT associated with breast cancer, says Christian Northrup, MD, author of "Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom." The term has been used to describe just about any kind of breast thickening, tenderness, lumpiness or other symptoms. But these are variations of normal breasts, in fact, fibrocystic "disease" is clearly not a disease, says Northrup. True "fibrocystic changes" are actually limited to a very small number of these conditions and can only be identified by a pathologist examining breast tissue. Most women with breast cysts do not have an increased risk of developing breast cancer and need only to have the cysts treated.
