You wonder if these symptoms are something to worry about. Your doctor tells you that you have fibrocystic breast disease, a scary name for a common, noncancerous condition that is believed to affect more than 60% of women. What is fibrocystic breast disease?
This condition, which is also called mammary dysplasia, benign breast disease, and diffuse cystic mastopathy, is really not a disease at all. Rather, these terms refer to changes in a woman's breasts that become more noticeable just before and during her menstrual period. These changes, which may include lumps, tenderness, and heaviness, often occur even in women who do not have fibrocystic breast disease. It appears that most women with this condition are not at increased risk for breast cancer. However, only a doctor can tell whether the changes are due to fibrocystic breast disease or another problem. This may be determined with just a manual examination, but sometimes an ultrasound, mammogram, or biopsy is needed. What causes fibrocystic breast disease?

Fibrocystic Disease
What Cancer is NOT
" lumpy breasts" fibrocystic breast disease Cancer Services Women encounter a broad variety of breast conditions including normal changes in breast anatomy—many of which may occur during the menstrual cycle. Many women also experience generalized breast lumpiness and have been told that they have "fibrocystic breast disease." But for 70 - 80% of these women, the condition characterized by "lumpy breasts" is commonplace, and fibrocystic breast disease can be termed more of a "condition" than a "disease." Generalized breast lumpiness, sometimes called fibrocystic disease, or benign breast disease, was once thought to increase the risk of breast cancer. It is now known that only a minority of such women actually have breast tissue that is at increased risk. The most common condition is "non-proliferative disease," which accounts for 80% of these "lumps" and carries no increased risk for breast cancer. Normal features can make the breasts feel lumpy, especially in women who are very thin or have small breasts. Lumpiness may become more obvious as a woman approaches middle age and the milk-producing glandular tissue of her breasts increasingly gives way to soft, fatty tissue. The second most common is "proliferative disease," which increases risk one and one-half to two fold over the average women (still considered a relatively small risk). Only 4% of fibrocystic disease is classified as "proliferative disease with atypical"; or "atypical hyperplasia," and this is associated with a four-fold increased risk, says Monica Morrow, MD, director of the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Program in Chicago and a specialist in breast cancer risk.

Fibrocystic breast changes: lumps that are normal
by Elaine Gottlieb Do your breasts feel lumpy? In most cases, you're probably experiencing fibrocystic breast change a benign condition that occurs in at least 60 percent of all women of child-bearing age. It sounds very unglamorous, but the human breast is no more than a lumpy gland made up of milk glands and ducts and the tissues that separate and support them. Most breasts have at least a lump or two; however, if your breast feels especially lumpy and uncomfortable, you're probably experiencing fibrocystic breast changes. What are fibrocystic changes? Fibrocystic changes are benign breast changes. The medical literature used to refer to them as "fibrocystic disease," but that was before fibrocystic changes were found to be no more a disease than menstruation or menopause . The breast tissue may feel dense with an irregular area of thicker tissue with a lumpy or ridge-like surface. You might also feel tiny bead-like masses scattered throughout the breasts. Your breasts may feel tender, swollen and full with a dull, heavy pain. They may be sensitive to touch with a burning sensation. This discomfort is normal and does not indicate the presence of disease. For some women the pain is so severe that they cannot exercise or lie on their stomachs. Fibrocystic changes usually occur in both breasts, most often in the upper outer quadrant and the underside of the breast where most of the milk-producing glands are located.

A True Cure Muriel John Lee, M.D. has treated fibrocystic breast disease with success for decades. He writes: "Muriel came into my office at age 50 with multiple scars on both breasts from seven different excision biopsies, all of which found dense fibrocystic breasts. She readily admitted chronic cancer anxiety. In addition, she suffered from reactive hypoglycemia. She performed breast self-exams routinely and the finding of each new lump aroused fear and trepidation because of her cysts. Now, at menopause, she wanted hormone replacement therapy. Instead of traditional HRT (hormone replacement therapy), I recommended physiologic dosages of progesterone without estrogen. Her fibrocysts disappeared within six months, her sense of energy and libido returned, her hypoglycemic episodes became a thing of the past, and her tennis game improved. Further , serial density (BMD) tests over the subsequent ten years remained good, and her cancer anxiety faded away with the improvement in her breasts."

How to avoid Xenoestrogens
Fibrocystic breast disease provoked by Xenoestrogens are found in everyday synthetic materials. These materials were previously thought to be inert.
by Elizabeth Smith, M.D.
Xeno literally means foreign. So xenoestrogens means foreign estrogens. Some of the 100,000 registered chemicals for use in the world have hormonal effects in addition to toxic and carcinogenic effects. Also the synergistic effects are known to occur but also are largely exactly unknown. The field of xenohormones is new, and only been in existence since about 1991. Critics have proclaimed that these chemicals are for the most part "weak". The body's hormones are at levels of parts per trillion. However, many of the chemicals that affect the hormone systems are routinely found in the serum after sauna at parts per billion. In other words, these chemicals that affect the hormone systems of the human body occur at 100 to 1000 times greater concentration than that of the normal human hormones. One researcher demonstrated that two "weak" estrogens may act synergistically to give a strong estrogen response. Some of these Xenoestrogens like DDE (a metabolite of DDT) may persist in the body fat for decades. Many of these mimicking hormones were previously thought to occur in pesticides. However, many of the newly discovered xenoestrogens are found in every day previously thought to be inert materials.

Normal Hormonal Changes may cause a feeling of fullness in the breast, which goes away after the menstrual period.
Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that often enlarge and become tender and painful just before the menstrual period.
Fibroadenomas are solid, round, rubbery, and freely movable breast lumps. Usually they are painless.
Lipomas are single, painless lumps that are sometimes found in older women. They are made up of fatty tissue and are slow-growing, soft, and movable.
Intraductal Papillomas are small wartlike growths in the lining of a duct near the nipple. They can produce bleeding from the nipple.
Mammary Duct Ectasia is an inflammation of the ducts that causes a thick, sticky, gray-to-green discharge from the nipple. Without treatment, the condition can become painful.
Mastitis is most often seen in breastfeeding women. It is an inflammatory condition in which the breast appears red and feels warm, tender, and lumpy.
Traumatic Fat Necrosis can result from a bruise or blow to the breast. It causes the fat in the breast to form lumps that are painless, round, and firm.

Bras and breast cancer
How bras are linked to breast cancer
Many people say that bras causing breast cancer is just a myth. It is true that bras do not cause breast per se , but ill-fitting, too tight bras can help cancer growth since they can prevent your body from excreting dangerous cancer-causing chemicals. And, as bra industry and even Oprah note, 80%+ of women wear the wrong-size bra. The main reason why tight bras are bad for breast health is because they restrict the lymph flow in your breasts. There are numerous lymph pathways and lymph nodes in the armpits, under the breasts, and in between the breasts. Normally the lymph fluid washes out waste materials and other toxins away from the breasts, but bras (and especially push-up bras) inhibit this action, so toxins can start to accumulate in the breast, and that can help cancer to develop. In other words, bras inhibit the way our bodies normally cleanse themselves and get rid of cancer cells and toxins like PCBs, DDT, dioxin, benzene and other carsinogenic chemicals that cling to the body's fatty tissues like breast. In fact, if you find a lump in your breast, it may very well be filled with lymph fluid that was not able to move away from the breast tissue. Bra wearing may also be connected to cancer in other ways. Wearing bras slightly increases the temperature of the breast tissue, and women who wear bras have higher levels of the hormone prolactin. Both of these may influence breast cancer formation.

Fibrocystic Breast Condition
(FCC)
What are fibrocystic breasts?
Fibrocystic breasts are characterized by lumpiness and usually discomfort in one or both breasts. The condition is very common and benign, meaning that fibrocystic breasts are not malignant (cancerous). Fibrocystic breast condition (FCC) is the most common cause of "lumpy breasts" in women and affects more than 60% of women. The condition primarily affects women between the ages of 30 and 50 and tends to become less of a problem after menopause The diagnosis of fibrocystic breasts is complicated by the fact that the condition can vary widely in its severity. In some women, the symptoms of FCC can be very mild with minimal breast tenderness or pain. The symptoms can also be limited in time, usually occurring only premenstrually. It may not even be possible to feel any lumps when the breasts are examined by the woman herself or by her doctor. In other women with fibrocystic breasts, the pain and tenderness are constant and many lumpy or nodular areas can be felt throughout both breasts.

Fibrocystic breast disease, for many women, is very treatable and preventable. For years, doctors have recommended that women avoid caffeine, high fat diets and so on, and even to take drugs with strong side effects. In some cases this helps, in others it doesn't. However, recent research has offered new hope because it has shown a strong connection between the wearing of bras and benign fibrocystic lumps, cysts and pain. For example, Dr. Gregory Heigh of Florida has found that over 90% of women with fibrocystic changes find improvement when they stop wearing their brassieres. This exciting new "treatment" has NO side effects, costs nothing, and is something that women try for themselves by making a personal and ALL-NATURAL clothing choice. After this introductory section, this article is comprised of six case histories written by women who found relief of fibrocystic by going bra-free. There is scientific support for the plausibility of this connection with breast disease. Two published studies have shown that women who wear bras have much higher breast cancer rates than women who don't wear a bra. A husband and wife research team published a study of almost 5000 women in the book

Only a physician can tell if this is due to fibrocystic tendencies or a specific problem. Most women with fibrocystic tendencies do not appear to be at increased risk for breast cancer. How should a woman with this condition do a search for breast disease? Is it impossible? Women with a fibrocystic disease should continue to do breast self-examination. By getting to know the texture of your own breast, whether they are lumpy, or nodular, and the location of the areas of tenderness, are all important points. When you do breast self-examination, you are feeling for a change. The analogy that another a physician has used for this is like looking for a rock or a boulder in a gravel road. Will this eventually or inevitably lead to breast cancer?

  • Services at a Glance ... Donations Fibrocystic Breast Condition What is Fibrocystic Breast Condition (FBC)? FBC refers to the breast lumpiness that occurs as a result of tissue changes. This is not a disease process but a variation in the normal changes that occur in the breast. What are the changes? Cysts (tissue sacs filled with fluid) and changes in the fibrous tissue of the breast (scarring) cause lumpiness. These lumps usually come and go in response to the hormone changes associated with the menstrual cycle. The breasts may be painful or tender. Usually both breasts are involved, most often in the upper outer part of the breasts where most of the breast tissue is located. Who is at risk? Most women are affected by FBC. It is the most common benign (not cancer) breast condition. There is no direct relationship to a risk for developing breast cancer. It occurs at any age after the onset of menstruation but is more common between the age of 30 and menopause. Fibrocystic breast condition can occur after menopause, especially in women on hormone replacement therapy. What causes FBC?
