Fibrocystic Breasts Format for Printing Main Menu: What Are Fibrocystic Breasts? Fibrocystic breast condition is a common, non-cancerous condition that affects more than 50% of women at some point in their lives. The most common signs of fibrocystic breasts include lumpiness, tenderness, cysts (packets of fluid), areas of thickening, fibrosis (scar-like connective tissue), and breast pain . Having fibrocystic breasts, in and of itself, is not a risk factor for breast cancer. However, fibrocystic breast condition can sometimes make it more difficult to detect a hidden breast cancer with standard examination and imaging techniques. Fibrocystic breast condition is most common among women between the ages of 30 and 50, although women younger than 30 may also have fibrocystic breasts. Because the condition is related to the menstrual cycle, the symptoms will usually cease after menopause unless a woman is taking hormone replacement therapy . In some cases, fibrocystic breast symptoms may continue past menopause.

Benign Breast Conditions Format for Printing A benign breast condition is any non-cancerous breast abnormality. According to the American Cancer Society, when breast tissue is examined under a microscope some type of abnormality is common in nine out of every ten women. Though not life-threatening, benign conditions may cause pain or discomfort for some patients. Some (not all) benign conditions can signal an increased risk for breast cancer. The most common benign breast conditions include fibrocystic breast condition , benign breast tumors, and breast inflammation. Depending on the type of benign breast condition and the patient's medical situation, treatment may or may not be necessary. Main menu: Overview: Breast Tissue Changes The breast is composed of two main types of tissues: glandular tissues and stromal (supporting) tissues. The glandular tissues house the milk-producing lobules and the ducts (the milk passages). The stromal tissues include fatty and fibrous connective tissue. Any changes in the glandular or stromal areas may cause symptoms of benign breast conditions. Some women experience changes to their breast tissue over their lifetime. These changes can include an increase in the number of breast cells (hyperplasia) or the emergence of atypical breast cells (atypical hyperplasia). In some instances, a portion of breast tissue that exhibits abnormal characteristics can eventually develop into a cancerous tumor. That is why physicians carefully monitor patients with abnormal breast cells, to ensure that if cancer develops at a later date, it is detected and treated early. Some patients with atypical hyperplasia may also be recommended to take the drug

Fibrocystic Breasts: A Non-Disease
Fibrocystic Breasts
Fibrocystic changes are the most common cause of breast lumps in women ages 30 to 50. Although fibrocystic changes may also be referred to as fibrocystic disease, this is not a disease, but a condition. It can be known as cystic disease, chronic cystic mastitis or mammary dysplasia. This condition is not cancerous. At least 60% of the women in their reproductive years have "lumpy" breasts as a result of these non-cancerous conditions. This is a very concise and informative page about fibrocystic breasts.
Diagnosing Fibrocystic Changes
Usually, fibrocystic changes can be diagnosed by physical examination or mammography, an x-ray of the breast. Fibrocystic changes also may be found with a biopsy. Fortunately, only about 5% of fibrocystic conditions have the type of changes that would be considered a risk factor of developing breast cancer.
Causes For Fibrocystic Changes
The cause of fibrocystic changes is related to the way breast tissue responds to monthly changes in the levels of estrogen and progesterone, female hormones produced by the ovaries during a woman's reproductive years. Each month during one's menstrual cycle, the breast tissue alternately swells and returns to normal. Hormonal stimulation of the breast tissue causes the milk glands and ducts to enlarge, and the breasts to retain water. The breasts frequently feel swollen, painful, tender, and lumpy at this time. After menstruation, swelling in the breast usually decreases, and the breasts feel less tender and lumpy. That's why the best time to examine the breast is 7-10 days after the start of the menstrual period, when the breast tissue is at its most normal state.

Breast lump removal - series Alternative names Return to top Breast mass Definition Return to top A breast lump is a swelling, protuberance, or lump in the breast. Considerations Return to top Normal breast tissue is present in both males and females of all ages. This tissue responds to hormonal changes and, therefore, certain lumps can come and go. Breast lumps may appear at all ages:
  • Infants may have breast lumps related to estrogen from the mother. The lump generally goes away on its own as the estrogen clears from the baby's body. It can happen to boys and girls. Young girls often develop "breast buds" that appear just before the beginning of puberty. These bumps may be tender. They are common around age 9, but may happen as early as age 6. Teenage boys may develop breast enlargement and lumps because of hormonal changes in mid-puberty. Although this may distress the teen, the lumps or enlargement generally go away on their own over a period of months.

Fibrocystic breast condition is a common benign problem for many women. It is estimated that over 50% of women have clear signs of fibrocystic breasts and 90% have some cellular changes associated with the condition. However, many women will notice no particular discomfort. The degree of breast pain experienced varies among women and is sometimes different with each menstrual period, or at different times in a woman's life cycle. Fibrocystic breast condition can occur at any age after menstruation starts, although the frequency peaks between age 30 and menopause. It rarely occurs after menopause. Breast self-exam is an important way to follow the changes in your breasts. If you know what your "baseline lumpiness" feels like, you will be more able to determine if one cyst displays persistent increase in size and seems to "stand out" from the background tissues, or if a cyst has become attached to underlying tissue and is no longer moveable. In such cases, you must see your medical provider for further evaluation. A breast check by your medical provider is also an important part of your annual women's health exam.

FIBROCYSTIC BREASTS
WHAT IS FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE?
The term Fibrocystic Breast Disease refers to a benign (non-cancerous) condition of the breasts of many women. Women with fibrocystic breasts usually have soft, moveable lumps in their breasts which may become very tender around the time of their period. After a woman has her period, the symptoms go away until just before the next menstrual period. Because this is a rather common condition about 1 in 5 women, and because it is benign, the term "disease" is not really appropriate. Many medical professionals use different names to refer to this same condition. Other terms which you may hear include: fibrocystic breasts, fibrous breast tissue, cystic breasts, or dense breast tissue. WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SUSPECT THAT I HAVE FIBROCYSTIC BREASTS ?
Anytime that you find a lump or notice any changes in your breasts it is important to make an appointment with the clinic or your private physician for an examination. You may be asked to come back after a certain length of time (usually after your next period) for another exam. This allows the clinician to see if swelling and tenderness decrease after your period.
