Fatty Oxidation Disorders (FODs) are genetic metabolic deficiencies in which the body is unable to oxidize (breakdown) fatty acids to make energy because an enzyme is either missing or not working correctly. The main source of energy for the body is a sugar called glucose. Normally when the glucose runs out, fat is broken down into energy. However, that energy is not readily available to children and adults with an FOD. If undiagnosed and untreated, these disorders can lead to serious complications affecting the liver, heart, eyes and general muscle development, and possibly death. Symptoms
There is a wide variation in presentation of FODs, even within the same family . Not every individual responds to a disorder in the same way. Some may be without major symptoms, yet others may have chronic bouts of low blood sugar leading to many hospitalizations Please note, however, that

In memory of our beautiful Simone.
Simone was a beautiful healthy little girl. She was a surprise late addition to our family. She has two older brothers Robert and Daniel who are 14 and 10 years older.
She was surrounded by family and friends who adored her. She was a happy little girl who loved life. She loved to dress up and thought she was a princess. She loved unicorns, rainbows, the moon ,stars and everything magical. She loved to dance and sing, she went to ballet. She loved school and was very bright.
We run a pub and she was everyone's friend, she would interact with all, she treated the pub as if it was her playhouse. She had a great temper and would scare the most brave, all would run if she was upset. She was the centre of our world and we are so lost without her, but we feel very honoured to have been blessed with her.
Her passing was sudden and totally unexpected. We are still in the process of tests for a precise diagnosis, but now know she had a problem in how she digested food. The problem happened in the couple of hours before she passed, it was that sudden. Nothing could have prepared us, she was a picture of health.
We have set up a galixy tribute fund in Simone's name, to help fund research into fatty oxidation disorders, (Fods)

yes no Fatty acids are one of the body's fuels: oxidation is the process by which they are broken down to release energy. This process has many steps, each catalysed by a different enzyme. Fatty acid oxidation disorders result from deficiency of one of these enzymes:
  • Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency
  • Very-long-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (VLCAD) deficiency
  • Short-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (SCAD) deficiency
  • Multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MAD) deficiency (= Glutaric aciduria type II, GA II)
  • Long-chain hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (LCHAD) deficiency
  • Trifunctional protein deficiency
  • Carnitine palmitoyl-transferase I (CPT I) deficiency
  • Carnitine palmitoyl-transferase II (CPT II) deficiency
  • Carnitine acylcarnitine translocase deficiency
  • Primary (systemic) carnitine deficiency
MCAD deficiency is the commonest disorder. Patients with MCAD deficiency are healthy most of the time. Infections or prolonged fasting, however, can lead to drowsiness and coma or sudden death. This can be prevented by avoiding fasting and maintaining a regular intake of sugar during infections - by mouth or intravenously if the child vomits. With this simple management, outcomes are excellent. Patients with other fatty acid oxidation disorders also need to avoid fasting and to maintain a regular sugar intake during infections. Unfortunately, they can have additional problems, such as muscle problems or heart muscle disease. Treatment usually involves a low fat diet.

Babies born with fatty acid oxidation disorders are unable to break down stored fats into energy. Energy from fat keeps the body running whenever it runs out of its main source: glucose. Prolonged fasting (i.e., going for long periods without eating, such as during an illness) can lead to severe, life-threatening symptoms or even death. Treatment includes dietary management and avoiding long periods without eating. MCAD (medium chain acyl-coA dehydrogenase) deficiency is a fatty acid oxidation disorder.
